The document discusses problems with traditional requirements techniques for projects and provides insights into alternative techniques that can help ensure projects deliver the right outcomes. Specifically, it notes that traditional techniques often result in projects getting lost in technology and failing to focus on business outcomes. Additionally, common factors that contribute to project failure include a lack of user input, incomplete requirements, and changing requirements. The document then questions where actual requirements are located for many projects and suggests using techniques like facilitation, play, and an emergent approach to help create an evolving story and focus on business outcomes rather than technology features.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Lesson 1: Why traditional requirements gathering techniques are brokenLesson 2: The key elements required to ensure your SharePoint project is delivering the right thingsLesson 3: A set of techniques, based upon the highly acclaimed books Gamestorming and ''Innovation Games'' that you can use to facilitate true business requirements

SharePoint rocks, you can achieve amazing results with the platform…
This is what we want!
Project failure – is not that you haven’t delivered SharePoint project, hit the targets on the Gannt chart – its that you’ve not delivered the expected outcomes of the business:User Experience isn’t what they wantNot delivering business valuePoor user adoptionLack of ROI
We forget why we are doing these projects and who for
We get wrapped up in the shinytools and technology and processes (agile anyone)!
SharePoint projects failing is fundamentally because of the “Celery Effect”Celery contains 6-8 calories. But the mere act of digesting said stalk burns more like 12-14 calories, resulting in a negative caloric intake. This is like spending lots of time and effort, licenses, hardware and project time and money, but not delivering anything the business needs¾ of SharePoint projects I was aware of over the past 5 years DID NOT deliver true Business ValueWhat are some of the key reasons?
Lack of Shared Understanding is the main reasonResults in the IT and business rift growing further… burning bridges when we’re meant to be working together and delivering measurable value.
We’re looking at problems with an IT/Technology focus – SharePoint Knows Nothing…It doesn’t know your business, sector, organisation, business problem
Requirements tends to be technology and feature ledWe allow projects to be specified as SharePoint features not business outcomesWe ask people what do they want and they ask what the technology can do… saying “anything” never works, so we turn to the wheel for a grounded explanation.
Notice I haven’t said that the technology sucksI haven’t said that SharePoint “can’t be made to do that”The technology isn’t the problem here guys…You guys are awesome and we can make SharePoint do ANYTHING… So why is this all so hard? Why are there SharePoint project problems? Why do we have a HUGE SharePoint Business Value problem?
As we said at the start, requirements in terms of measurable business outcomes is key to delivering SharePoint well and we need a new view to inspire people to change the way they work. But what most of us do at the moment is very myopic, technology and feature based; we need a different view, a wider view…
Stand-Up… Sit down when you’ve experienced one of these project challengesSource: Chaos Report (1995)http://www.projectsmart.co.uk/docs/chaos-report.pdf
What difference will your project, implementation, programme, web-part, cool tool make to the clients business??
SharePoint Projects are People projects… Every SharePoint project you deliver fundamentally changes the way people work….That’s a big freakin’ deal!We have to get it right!

Back in 1999, at the dawn of the mainstream adoption of the ‘Intranet’, when Lotus Notes was emerging as a dominant player and Microsoft hadn’t even joined the party, a fundamental shift occurred in Information Technology that I truly believe we all missed. Before then we were focussed on delivering technology solutions that automated human processes and made us more efficient.Around 1999 we started to look at technology more in the realm of augmenting and supporting human interactions. At this point we should have stopped analysing requirements and started to facilitate them!
[T]here are known knowns; there are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns; that is to say there are things that, we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don't know.”—United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld
