Renzo Piano's iconic design for The Shard took inspiration from London's church spires and the masts of tall ships depicted in Canaletto paintings. Piano envisioned The Shard as a vertical city rather than just a tall tower, with different uses stacked vertically. His pyramidal design accommodates offices, restaurants, a hotel, apartments and viewing galleries. Piano employed innovative glass façades and a tapering spire to give the impression of lightness and transparency despite its great height. The Shard's dramatic form has sparked the regeneration of its London Bridge neighbourhood.
