This document provides details about the L.I.C. Jeewan Bharti building located in New Delhi, designed by architect Charles Correa. It consists of two 13-storey towers springing from a three-level base with two underground parking levels. Key features include a terraced piazza, an open grid parasol structure, and faceted glass surfaces that reflect the surrounding buildings. The lower levels contain shopping and restaurants while the upper levels contain offices, totaling 63,000 square meters of built area. Structural elements include a space frame connecting the two towers, stack panel glazing used for the facade, and red sandstone wall cladding.

Pondicherry had been passed on to multiple colonial powers of Dutch, Portuguese, English, but predominantly French. Even now there's a huge French influence in Pondicherry, now a Union Territory of India.
The Kanchanjunga Apartments, designed by Charles Correa, are a direct response to the present culture, the escalating urbanization, and the climatic conditions for the region. They pay homage to the vernacular architecture that once stood on the site before the development in a number of ways. More on Kanchanjunga Apartments after the break.

Envelops: It is the physical separator between the conditioned and unconditioned environment of a building including the resistance to air, water, heat, light, and noise transfer. The building envelope a usually consists of its roof, subfloor, exterior doors, windows and exterior walls

OVERVIEW
This office complex for the Life
Insurance Corporation of India
(LIC) is situated on the outer road
of Connaught Circle.
It acts as a pivot between the
colonnades of Connaught Place
and the new generation of high-
rise towers that now surround it.
The building is both proscenium
and backdrop: faceted glass
surfaces reflect the buildings and
trees around Connaught Place,
and beyond which the new high-
rise imagery of Delhi can be
glimpsed
3. PLANNING
The two lower levels of the
complex consist of shopping
decks and restaurants.
The ground coverage of the
building is 6200 square metres.
The upper levels of offices are
located in two separate wings,
generating a total built-up area
of 63,000 square metres.
Connecting the two wings, is a
great pergola, 98 metres long,
supported at either end by
masonry piers and in the middle
by a single column.

On the side of the building ,the
windows are deeply recessed into the

16. The building has a no. of other
important elements that
contributes to the aesthetic
beauty of the building. These are
:
Space Frame that connects
both the blocks as one unit.
Stack Panel Glazing that is
entirely used for the façade.
Sandstone Wall Cladding
that beautifies the entire
building.
AESTHETIC
FEATURES
17. SPACE FRAME
It is a truss like , lightweight, rigid
structure constructed from interlocking
struts in a geometric pattern.
Space frames can be used to span large
areas with few interior supports.
A space frame is strong because of :
It is composed of planar substructures.
The plane are channeled through the
horizontal bars and the shear forces
are supported by the diagonals.
The inherent rigidity of the
triangle.
The bending moment is
transmittted as
tension and compression loads
along the length of each strut.
A 98 meters long pergola connects
the two buildings.
18. Length of the member in space frame =1500mm
Since, h= ½. a . 0.414
= 0.707a
= 0.707 X 1500mm ( a=1500mm )
= 1060mm

Height of the Space Frame =1060mm
Angle formed = 60 degree

19. STACKPANEL GLAZING
The term ‘structural glass’ is a term used to describe a large
number of frameless glass assemblies where the glass itself
is taking an element of the structural loads that are
applied to the elevation or surface. The glazing used in this
building is called stackpanel glazing.
JEEVAN BHARTI BHAVAN HAS GLASS
AS A STRUCTURE IN IT TO CREATE
THE ELEVATION OF STRUCTURAL
GLASS SUPPORTED BY MINIMAL
STEEL OR LAMINATED GLASS
BEAMS AND FINS.
20. FEATURES OF THE GLAZING:
Zone drainage - each pane acts as an individual self
draining unit
Side load
Stack joint
Fully drained and pressure equalised
Lifting rail
The system accommodates glass or infill panels up to
32mm
Complies with thermal regulations
Horizontal cap with vertical silicone joint
Vertical cap with horizontal silicone joint
mullion, transom and face cap options with
64mm sightlines
Seismic movement capability.
21. SANDSTONE WALL CLADDING
A no. of office buildings in Delhi are seen
cladded with RED SAND STONE. Red sand
stone cladding are very common in Delhi as a
building material as it is cheap and economic.
Renowned buildings built with red sand stone
cladding are STC BUILDING, JEEVAN BHARTI
BHAVAN etc.
MANY RENOWNED ARCHITECTS LIKE
CHARLES CHORREA , RAJ REWAL USED
RED SAND STONE AS A CLADDING
MATERIAL IN THEIR BUILDING. JEEVAN
BHARTI BHAVAN IN CONNAUGHT PLACE IS
ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS.
CLADDING
RED SANDSTONE is used in the
most part of the building apart from
structural glass glazing.
DIMENSIONS of the SANDSTONE
used:
1) 2’’x2’’x1 inch
2) 2.5’’x1.2’’x1 inch
FIXING OF CLADDING
The cladding of the building is
primarily done with red
sandstone.
It is fixed with mortar and then
screw bolted at the center for the
protection during earthquakes.
