2. Seventeen is a monthly issued American
magazine based in New York. Its first
publication was made in September 1944 by
Walter Annenberg’s Triangle Publication. The
magazine’s current publisher is Hearst
Corporation. It is mainly aimed at 10-21-year
old’s. Initially it aspired to provide teenagers a
basis to becoming model workers and citizens.
However, soon after its debut the magazine
became more fashion and romance oriented,
simultaneously promoting self-confidence in
young women. From the time of the first editor
of Seventeen, Helen Valentine, to the present-
day editor, Michelle Tan, the magazine has
suffered through a number of controversies
and many other up’s and down’s, however it
has maintained its position as being one of the
best-selling teen magazines at the moment.
About the Magazine
3.
4. Masthead
The font used for the logo is Arsis Italic. Seventeen is one of the very few
mediums that uses this font.
The head of the model is covering the masthead which implies that the
magazine is quite famous and so doesn’t need to show the entire name.
The logo of the magazine is always written in the same manner on every
issue. This brings unity amongst the magazines and the readers of the
magazine are easily able to recognize it even though they cannot read the
entire logo.
5. The main cover-line of the
magazine gives away the entire
content of the magazine in just
four words.
Seventeen is a magazine aimed
towards teenagers. Teens are
mainly in their early school years,
where many of them face
problems such as bullying etc.,
therefore publishing an issue of
the magazine based on owning
your school years would seem
quite attractive to this specific
audience.
Main Cover-line
6. The cover-lines of the magazine are written in
quite a messy (doodle-ish) font, which
indicates the writing of a student. This type of
font is found mostly inside the notebook of a
student.
Everything written in the cover-lines is related
to school one way or the other.
There is also the use of colloquial language
with words such as ‘amp’, to gain relatability
with the young audience.
The colors used are pink, turquoise and black
with white background. The colors all
together seem to give a very friendly look.
Seeing that the magazine is aimed at a teen
audience, the color combination is very well
selected.
Cover-lines
7. The selling line of the magazine
tells about an interview with a
singer/actress who is currently
rising quite rapidly to fame and is
gaining massive following. This
gives the magazine a huge
advantage as it would help sell this
particular issue to a larger audience.
It also talks about chasing your
dreams which would give the
young readers of the magazine a
bit of hope, especially since it’s
coming from a person who is
currently proving to be quite
successful in doing so.
Selling Line
8. The shot and angle used to capture the main
image is a cowboy-shot that is taken at an
eye-level angle. The shot is a high-key shot.
The posture of the model, Hailee Steinfeld, is
a confident yet a casual one. She is looking
straight at the camera. This pose makes her
look confident yet friendly which helps the
reader to connect with her.
Her clothes are casual, however, the material
of her shorts is silk – giving it a more formal
look.. The shorts worn with a casual button-
down sweater makes for a very day-to-day
outfit that can be worn by anyone.
The color of the outfit blends very easily with
the color of the writing around her.
The cover has been kept very simple and
casual, since it’s aimed at school going
teenagers.
