CONCEPT NOTE FOR CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION TRAINING AT MRLG REGIONAL
LAND FORUM
Half-day training scheduled for Wednesday, 22 June from 13:30 – 17:00, Hanoi, Vietnam
MRLG has requested Mr. Seth Kane (RECOFTC HQ TFC program officer) and Mr. Than Vu (RECOFTC
Vietnam country training coordinator) to conduct a half-day training on Conflict Transformation.
Staff time charges for this service provision are contained in the proposed budget below.
TRAINING OVERVIEW AND SESSION PLAN
This half-day training aims to introduce participants to the field of conflict transformation regarding land
and natural resource conflicts.
Using a participatory approach, the training will focus on four key elements:
1) Developing a definition of conflict and assessing positive and negative implications of conflict
over sustainable natural resource management
2) Introducing core theoretical frameworks
3) Applying the conflict analysis tool of five causes of conflict to participant cases
4) Reviewing potential topics for future trainings and independent study
At the end of this session, participants will be able to…
 Examine positive and negative implications of natural resource management conflict
 Determine basic elements and causes of conflict within natural resource management
 Identify key competencies needed for conflict transformation

phenomenon, happening in
everyday life and all over the
world
 Participants have specified the
negative and positive elements
of conflict.
Develop a definition of conflict
through interactive participant
exercises with key word
suggestions followed by plenary
discussion with guided questions
Split participants into two
groups: one negative, other
positive elements of conflict
Material: Flipcharts, post-its and
markers

minute coffee break)
Session 3 - Introduction to
core theoretical frameworks
and practical application of
causes of conflict model
 Participants are familiar with
the stages/levels of conflict
 Participants are able to identify
and elaborate on five main
categories of causes
Participants place their own
conflict case on the levels/stages
of conflict flipchart + interactive
exercise on conflict dynamics.
Identification of own country
conflicts and application of the
five causes of conflict
framework (group work)
Present group findings back to
plenary with Q&A

Seth kane conflict transformation

  • 1. CONCEPT NOTE FOR CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION TRAINING AT MRLG REGIONAL LAND FORUM Half-day training scheduled for Wednesday, 22 June from 13:30 – 17:00, Hanoi, Vietnam MRLG has requested Mr. Seth Kane (RECOFTC HQ TFC program officer) and Mr. Than Vu (RECOFTC Vietnam country training coordinator) to conduct a half-day training on Conflict Transformation. Staff time charges for this service provision are contained in the proposed budget below. TRAINING OVERVIEW AND SESSION PLAN This half-day training aims to introduce participants to the field of conflict transformation regarding land and natural resource conflicts. Using a participatory approach, the training will focus on four key elements: 1) Developing a definition of conflict and assessing positive and negative implications of conflict over sustainable natural resource management 2) Introducing core theoretical frameworks 3) Applying the conflict analysis tool of five causes of conflict to participant cases 4) Reviewing potential topics for future trainings and independent study At the end of this session, participants will be able to…  Examine positive and negative implications of natural resource management conflict  Determine basic elements and causes of conflict within natural resource management  Identify key competencies needed for conflict transformation

SESSION PLAN Time and sessions Objectives Methods and materials 13:30 – 13:45 Session 1 - Introduction of participants and trainers  Participants are welcomed and introduced to the trainers and understand the rationale for the training  Participants have familiarized with the role of RECOFTC as an experienced capacity development organization in natural resource conflicts Presentation 13:45 – 14:15 Session 2 - Common understanding of conflict  Participants have developed a common understanding of conflict  Participants have recognized conflict as a common phenomenon, happening in everyday life and all over the world  Participants have specified the negative and positive elements of conflict. Develop a definition of conflict through interactive participant exercises with key word suggestions followed by plenary discussion with guided questions Split participants into two groups: one negative, other positive elements of conflict Material: Flipcharts, post-its and markers 14:15 – 16:15 (with 15 minute coffee break) Session 3 - Introduction to core theoretical frameworks and practical application of causes of conflict model  Participants are familiar with the stages/levels of conflict  Participants are able to identify and elaborate on five main categories of causes Participants place their own conflict case on the levels/stages of conflict flipchart + interactive exercise on conflict dynamics. Identification of own country conflicts and application of the five causes of conflict framework (group work) Present group findings back to plenary with Q&A Material: Flipcharts, post-its and markers
