5. Cooperation on Social Forestry in ASEAN
• The objective of the ASEAN Working Group on
Social Forestry (AWG-SF):
– Provide specific policy recommendations
on the effects of social forestry in
enhancing sustainable forest management
– Recognise & protect customary and
statutory tenure arrangements
– Access and use rights of indigenous
people, local communities, forest dwellers
and other forest-dependent communities
– Supporting appropriate legislation,
processes and mechanisms, including the
principle of FPIC
7. ASEAN-Swiss Partnership on Social Forestry and Climate Change
(ASFCC)
• Consultative program design, align with ASEAN documents
• Working at different level, regional, national and sub-national
• Effective mechanisms to engage with civil society
• At the national level, supported and complemented program and initiatives
of respective government (ie. support national working groups on SF/CF)
• Total area managed by community forestry in ASEAN increase significantly
(around 6mill ha in 2010 into more than 13mill ha in 2019) (Social Forestry and
Climate Change in ASEAN Region- RECOFTC)

10. Moving Forward
• AWG-SF continue to work based on the mandate amidst the final
phase of ASFCC in February 2020
• Former ASFCC Partners committed to support the implementation
of Plan of Action (2021-2025)
• Priorities defined under POA, among others:
– State and Outlook of Agroforestry in ASEAN- deliverable in
2021
– Develop ASEAN Guidelines for Customary Tenure Recognition
– Legal guidelines established for FPIC in community
forestry
