We hear the term “soft skills” as the definition of personal attributes that enable us to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.
However, there is nothing soft about mastering these skills; there is “strength” in the practice of developing these “Power” skills that are more intangible but critical to your working and interacting with the people around you effectively.
The best investment you can make is in yourself and practicing power skills helps you produce the results you want at work, at home, and in the world, building that expertise in the most critical person in your life, you.

Growth
Rings
Teresa Henry, PhD, is Director of CMC with Sequoia
Consulting. She leads global projects and initiatives at
Illumina to drive best-in-class standards, and also is the
Sequoia site lead for about 30 team members, helping to
guide data collection, create new tests and find ways to
optimize efficiencies and processes. We asked her how our
new mission statement (page 3) lives and breathes in her
actions and those of all Sequoia team members.
On Success
A big part of our success is in the people we recruit
and their ability to lead and guide our clients to
their organizational goals. Ultimately, we succeed
only if we provide guidance that clients accept and
that helps them succeed. It’s all very much about the
team and how do we get to where we need to go
together. If we aren’t open and honest with people,
our reputation is lost. So we have to come in and be
completely up-front.
On Marketing
Our people are our best marketing tool. Clients
come to me and say ‘I want another Mary, or so-
and-so.’ They ask for them by name. That means
they think very highly of that person. It also means
that we are doing our job and creating demand for
our Sequoia Specialists and services.
On Communication
Communication is key. When we come into a new
environment, we figure out the culture and how to
move in one direction to achieve goals. You can’t do
that without open communication. Our job becomes
10 times harder when we stop reaching out.
On Roles
Often, when there is a large task to accomplish and
a large team in place, you need a facilitator.
Everyone is speaking the same language, but they
don’t hear each other. So you have to become that
third-party neutral, a translator who takes a back
seat and lets everyone around you shine.
On Passion
Our people are some of the most outgoing versions
of what we do. There is laughter, engagement and
energy. That comes from selecting the right
personalities. We exude passion because we are the
more expressive types for each of these roles. We are
not all extroverts, but our people tend to be
outgoing, and good communicators.
On Leadership
The best advice I ever had? Wherever you go, your
job as an employee is to make your boss look good.
If you become the boss, your job is to make your
employee’s job easy.

MY F AV O R I T E TH I N G S
So often, the simple
things in life are my favorite things.
A newsletter? That’s something our parents
or grandparents relied upon before email,
social media, texting and all things electronic.
However, I got the memo: you are hungry for
connection and communication! We are
working on various tools and systems to help
all our Sequoia Specialists get and stay
connected, including development of a
company intranet. In the meantime, we’ve
had some requests for a newsletter and
decided to give it a try. Of course, ours is
electronic, but the focus remains pretty much
the same as it did back in the day--inform,
engage and maybe even entertain you with
news, updates and some fun-to-read content
about our people, our teams, our company
and our industry. We will celebrate and
applaud success, connect members of the
Sequoia family and introduce new tools and
programs designed to help you do your job
better and more efficiently. I hope you like it!
Send me a text or email to let me know what
you think and what you would like to see
more of in future issues. Speaking of favorite
things, what are yours for enjoying summer
in San Diego County? Here are a few of mine.
I hope you are all having a fantastic summer.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication
to our clients and team!
A peaceful walk on the beach; finding shells &
sea glass.
Breakfast; a Swami’s pancake is a favorite!
A workout at CorePower Yoga; even better?
Yoga on the beach!

We don’t sell; we solve
“Sequoia does not have traditional salespeople; we all
promote our business. Our ʻproductʼ is our people, and
they are our most valuable resource. Our subject matter
experts represent our brand and the Sequoia Suite of
Solutions. By networking with current and potential
clients, we discover how we can help solve a problem or
fill a need—thatʼs good for clients, good for our people
and good for our business.” Brandy Bullen
For Sequoia, every client
problem is an opportunity
for our organization. We
network, listen and look for
ways to help; in fact, we ask
colleagues to join us for

Itʼs a relationship and conversation, and every
conversation is an opportunity to discover needs
that our Sequoia Specialists can fill. Looking for
help with your networking conversations? We’ve
developed a tool to help you hone your own
networking style and deliver an “elevator pitch”
that’s personal and unrehearsed, but effective and
consistent to the brand. You can find it in the Black
