ILUC prevention Strategies for Sustainable Biofuels 20150402_RomaniaIulia Pisca
This document describes a case study on quantifying strategies to prevent indirect land use change (ILUC) from rapeseed biodiesel production in Eastern Romania. Six ILUC prevention measures are investigated: 1) above baseline yield increases, 2) improved chain integration, 3) increased chain efficiency, 4) use of underutilized lands, 5) land zoning, and 6) lower GHG emissions. The results suggest the potential for low-ILUC risk rapeseed biodiesel production of 2-16 PJ/year could be achieved through these measures, with above-baseline yield increases contributing the most followed by use of underutilized lands. Realizing this potential requires significant investment and modernization of Romanian agriculture.
