Sentence and clause

1. SENTENCE Sentences are constructedaccordingto a system of rules knownbythemother-tongue speaker at thesubconsciouslevel.( competence) They are thelargestconstructions towhichthe rules of grammarapply. They are difficultto define, forthere are differentlevels of analysis

2. Sentences are grouped into 2 main types, according to whether they are regularly or irregularly formed: MAJOR senteces regulary formed : I love you MINOR sentences irregulary formed : No Smoking

4. MULTIPLE sentences: contain more than 1 clause.SentenceSentence Clauseclauseclauseclause

5. MULTIPLEsentences can beeithercompoundorcomplex Compoundsentenceshaveclauses at thesamelevel ( mainclause + mainclause) : clause + and / but + clause Complexsentenceshaveclauses at differentlevels (mainclause + subordinateclause) : clause + if / when / while + clause

6. There are 4 levels of structure which comprise the grammatical hierarchy: Sentences Clause Phrase Word ( with its morphological level)

9. Classify the senteces you have found and mark the clauses as main or subordinate in multiple sentences .
