SELF REFLECTION : OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST FOR
REHABILITATION OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE
INTRODUCTION
 I chose the service of OT for helping patients with
Coronary Heart Diseases in a rehabilitation centre
 I was required to prepare one critical evaluation
essay and one journal on the topic of Coronary heart
disease while working as OT
 Further I was also required to evaluate the definitions
and meaning of CHD rehabs.
 An Occupational Therapist plays the role of an
individual who helps the patients in rehabilitation
centres to become mentally satisfied and improves
the living condition of patients with long terms
diseases.
CRITICAL EVALUATION OF CHD REHABILITATION
 From this essay I became aware that Coronary
heart diseases are a disease of heart where the
coronary arteries of the heart are filled by a wax
substance.
 Around 73000 deaths due to coronary heart
disease have been reported in UK annually.
 As per the American Heart Association Conference,
this disease majorly occurs due to genetic factors.
CONTD..
 The essay focused on providing information
regarding the history of the Coronary Heart
Disease
 Factors for quality care about Coronary Heart
disease were also provided
 I also gained knowledge about the rehabilitation
techniques for the coronary heart disease that
have been implemented in case of the disease
in the 21st century.
 Some of the techniques include cardiac
imaging, non invasive imaging and proper
rehabilitation
CRITICAL EVALUATION OF ROLE OF OT IN
REHABILITATION CENTRE
 As an OT working in the Cardiac rehabilitation centre I will
get the opportunity of improving the quality of life of the
patients
 Use therapy programs to enhance long term survival of
patients
 The rehabilitation program is offered in different nursing
homes, hospitals, car centres and also in home
CONTD…
 CHD rehabilitation is a short program for 6
months however can be increased
depending on the severity of the patients.
 There are four phases and starts from the
time the patient is being admitted to the
hospital
CONTRIBUTION OF THE MODULE IN IMPROVING
MY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE AS OT
 Module has helped me in gaining knowledge
about Coronary heart disease
 I have been able to understand the
processes availing of which will help prevent
the CHD
 I got information about the rehabilitation
centres ad their working processes
CONTD…
 I got information on the duties I need to
perform as an Occupational Therapist
 I also gained practical experience while
rehabilitating the patients group
 My clinical expertise also increased because
I was able to learn about the medical
methods that can be used for curing these
patients and also the medical methods that
can be used for preventing the disease.
CRITICAL REFLECTION ON MY LEARNING
 Gained knowledge from the experiences of
the patients about the critical condition that
they have suffered during the disease
 Daily sessions with disease affected people
helped me to understand the importance of
walks, gardening, swimming and exercise in
the lives of the people
WEAKNESS IN THE LEARNING
 Lack of extensive research on the topic
 Limitation of the clinical knowledge regarding
pathology and physiology of CHD
 Not able to identify the best strategy for
caring the CHD individuals from the OT
practice
CONTD…
 Limitation of practical skills
 Limited number of CHD patients interaction
 Limited duties as a OT
CONCLUSION
 The major learning objective of this module was
to evaluate and critically analyse the pathology
and physiology of the CHD patients. Hence in
order to successfully evaluate that I chose the
option of working as a occupational therapist in
one of the reputed rehabilitation centres where I
was assigned the role of OT to treat the CHD
patients. After the completion of the project I
became aware of the fact that as an OT it is
essential to treat these categories of patients
with care and help them revive the situation.

  • 13. CONCLUSION  The major learning objective of this module was to evaluate and critically analyse the pathology and physiology of the CHD patients. Hence in order to successfully evaluate that I chose the option of working as a occupational therapist in one of the reputed rehabilitation centres where I was assigned the role of OT to treat the CHD patients. After the completion of the project I became aware of the fact that as an OT it is essential to treat these categories of patients with care and help them revive the situation.

Editor's Notes

  1. Since I had previously been a part of the cardiac Rehabilitation Program hence choice of playing the role of OT in CHD was a wise idea. Further the reason behind choice of this disease is the high death rates that have been caused due to this disease. It has been noted that patients detected with coronary heart diseases are generally mentally weak, hence as an occupational therapist I would be able to improve their mental situation.
  2. By selecting this topic for my essay my aim was to determine the concept of CHD and also critically evaluate CHD rehabilitation. Further my aim was to understand the exact condition so that I would be able to attend to the needs of the patients suffering from this condition.
  3. From this part I became aware of the factors that will help me in reducing or even avoiding this disease in future circumstances. Changes in lifestyle, antiplatelets medication, use of nitrates and beta blockers have the ability of reducing the chances of getting this disease even if it is genetically transmitted. In the 21st century generally the doctors do not prefer large number of medicines in order to cure the cardiac disease, rather they have developed exercise techniques and stress reduction techniques that will help in developing the health of the patients. From the critical evaluation I found that by assessing the dietary conditions, reduction in mental stress and keeping the patients affected with coronary heart disease happy, it is possible to reduce the stress level of the patients and increase their life span.
  4. As a part of my project I also prepared a journal that makes critical evaluation of the role of OT in a rehabilitation centre. While preparing this journal I have been able to understand the major roles and functions that are required to be performed by me as an occupational therapist. From the journal I have been able to identify the fact that the patient themselves in most of the cases asks for the OT services because they want to develop their living standards and also wants to live for more number of years. In the first phase of the rehabilitation, the patient after being admitted to hospital is supervised and monitored in order to check the critical extent of the patient. In the second phase as a OT I am required to guide the patient on the exercise that should be undertaken by the patient in order to get healthy.
  5. The third phase generally takes place after 12 weeks of exercise routine followed by the patient. In this phase the OT is required to monitor the effectiveness of the exercise that has been undertaken by the patient and the OT will also check whether any other cardiac complications have taken place in the process. In the fourth stage generally the patient does not require any further supervision.
  6. I have been able to understand the importance of the disease and the data about the death rates and the genetic causes behind the disease from this module I am aware now that changes in lifestyle and maintenance of healthy diet will help me to reduce my chances of getting infected by this disease As a part of the project I was required to also prepare a journal on the occupational therapy in rehabilitation centres. Thus from the secondary resources I have been able to gain knowledge about the working process in rehabilitation centres and also the ways in which occupational therapists provide their services to the patients.
  7. I understood that I need to attend to the needs of the patients, make them understand the importance of exercise, evaluate the improvements that have taken place due to the exercise undertaken by the patients The practical experience helped me implement the OT duties which made me understand the way I should communicate with these categories of patients. Since cardiac patients are highly sensitive hence I used to communicate in a polite manner with these patients so that they can feel comfortable
  8. After completion of the project I can now successfully point to the fact that I have done critical evaluation on the project and gained knowledge about the module. The experiences of the patients have helped me to understand the ways in which I should deal with the CHD patients in my future conditions. The live experience along with the people affected with the disease has helped me understand the importance of the disease and realise the negative outcomes of the disease.
  9. Since the project was a part of my academic course, hence there was a time constraint which forced me to reduce the number of patient interactions hence the quality of the research was not up to the mark.
  10. For the purpose of the essay and journal I have used the information acquired from the secondary resources, however I have not been able to get knowledge on clinical details of the disease and its treatment. My time as an occupational therapist was also limited and hence I was not able to perform diverse types of duties while I served this position. Thus I was not able to identify which is the best method is using which I will be able to develop the caring strategy for the CHD individuals. Thus the purpose of the role of OT was not completed.
