This document provides an overview of self-ligating brackets in orthodontics. It begins with an introduction to the history and evolution of orthodontic appliances, moving from Edward Angle's original edgewise appliance using ligatures to later developments incorporating straight wire techniques. The document then discusses the properties of ideal ligation systems and classifications of self-ligating brackets as either passive or active. Key developments in self-ligating bracket history and designs are outlined. The document reviews proposed clinical advantages of self-ligating brackets as well as limitations of the existing research comparing them to conventional brackets.

The simplicity of bonding can be misleading. The technique undoubtedly can be misused, not only by an inexperienced clinician but also by more experienced orthodontists who do not perform procedures with care.
Success in bonding requires understanding of and adherence to accepted orthodontic and preventive dentistry principles.
The advantages and disadvantages of bonding versus banding of different teeth must be weighed according to each practitioner’s preferences, skill, and experience.
Bonding should be considered as part of a modern preventive package that also includes a strict oral hygiene program, fluoride supplementation, and the use of simple yet effective appliances. In other words, complicated mechanics with abundant use of coil springs and multilooped arches lends itself less well to bonding and easily can compromise the integrity of tooth enamel and gingival tissues around brackets on small bonding bases.

Orthodontic wires are used to carry out the necessary tooth movements as part of orthodontic treatment. A variety of materials are used to produce orthodontic wires. The archwire has been an integral part of the orthodontic appliance, and the high esthetic demand by the patient, along with the introduction of composite and ceramic brackets initiated research for esthetic archwires to go with these brackets. Esthetic archwires available are composite, optiflex and coated archwires. Appropriate use of all the available wire types may enhance patient comfort and reduce chairside time as well as the duration of treatment. The individual clinician must always know and understand the needs and options at every stage of therapy
The art of orthodontics involves correction of the position of teeth and the relation of craniofacial structures.
The Teeth are moved by the use of forces and moments, which are delivered through the use of various types of wires.
From the beginning of the profession, different types of wires have been introduced to provide forces to move teeth.
Light and Continuous Forces have always been sought, and operators have tried to achieve this in a variety of ways.

INTRODUCTION
When a prosthesis that can be removed from the mouth is used, the prosthesis must extend to both sides of the arch.
This enables transfer of functional forces of occlusion from the denture base to all supporting teeth and tissues within an arch for optimum stability.
It is through this cross-arch tooth contact, which occurs at some distance from the functional force, that optimum resistance can be achieved
This is most effectively accomplished when a rigid major connector joins the portion of the prosthesis receiving the function to selected regions throughout the arch.
A major connector combines all other components of an RPD so that the partial denture acts as one unit.
Thus, functional loads can be distributed to all abutment teeth, and cross-arch stabilization can be provided.
In addition, in distal extension RPDs, forces can be distributed between both the abutment teeth and the mucosa by unification of the direct retainers with the denture base.
TERMINOLOGIES
MAJOR CONNECTOR- GPT 9
The part of a removable partial denture that joins the components on one side of the arch to those on the opposite side.
CROSS-ARCH STABILIZATION :
Resistance against dislodging or rotational forces obtained by using a partial removable dental prosthesis design that uses natural teeth on the opposite side of the dental arch from the edentulous space to assist in stabilization
REQUIREMENTS
To function effectively and minimize potentially damaging effects, all major connectors must
1. Be rigid
2. Provide vertical support and protect the soft tissues
3. Provide a means for obtaining indirect retention where indicated
4. Provide a means for placement of one or more denture bases
5. Promote patient comfort
RIGIDITY
PROVIDE VERTICAL SUPPORT AND PROTECT THE SOFT TISSUES
The second fundamental requirement of a major connector is that it must not permit impingement upon the free gingival margins of the remaining teeth.
The marginal gingivae are highly vascular and susceptible to injury from sustained pressure.
For this reason, care should be exercised during the design and fabrication of removable partial dentures.
In the maxillary arch, the borders of a major connector should be located at least 6 mm from the free gingival margins.
The borders should run parallel to the gingival margins of the remaining teeth.
If the gingival margins must be crossed, they should be crossed at right angles to minimize coverage of the delicate marginal tissues
Where the major connector crosses a gingival margin, relief (le, space) must be provided between the metal and soft tissues.
If relief is not provided, inflammation of the soft tissues will result.
PROVIDE A MEANS FOR OBTAINING INDIRECT RETENTION WHERE INDICATED
It is important to note that

Biomechanical modifications made to accommodate orthodontic treatment of adult dentitions are generally minor and adhere to the basic laws of physics as they apply to orthodontic tooth movement.
Some adult presentations necessitate changes in treatment strategy from what would otherwise be employed in adolescent patients to achieve similar goals.
In other cases, objectives themselves may need to be modified because of lack of growth potential, constraints of treatment mandated by the patient or the presence of multiple missing or compromised teeth.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. INTRODUCTION
• The specialty of orthodontics has continued to evolve since its advent
in the early 20th century.
• Changes in treatment philosophy, mechanics, and appliances have
helped shape our understanding of orthodontic tooth movement.
• Edward H Angle - treat malocclusions by developing new orthodontic
appliances.
• Angle’s edgewise appliance - rectangular wire inserted into bracket
slot and tied with ligature.
5/24/2021 3
4. • Lawrence F Andrews - straight wire appliance.
• Instead of bending wires to place teeth in the proper
orientation with an edgewise bracket, Andrews‘ appliance
had the angulation and torque values built into the brackets
commonly known as the appliance prescription.
5/24/2021 4
5. • Since then, many orthodontic companies have developed their own bracket systems with
specific prescriptions, treatment philosophies, and mechanics.
• However, they all shared one common characteristic – ligatures must be placed around tie
wings on brackets to hold arch wires in the bracket slot.
5/24/2021 5
6. LIGATURES AND LIGATION PROPERTIES
• Different types of ligatures have been used to hold the
archwire in the bracket slot. Steel or elastomeric ligatures
have been used mainly.
• The steel ligatures are made of chrome-alloy stainless steel
with dimensions vary from 0.009” to 0.012” Inch in
diameter and twisted with a hand instrument.
• In some cases, these ligatures are coated with tooth-
coloured material such as Teflon for aesthetic reasons. Steel
ligatures produce a variable effect on the bracket/archwire
junction depending on their tightness.
5/24/2021 6
7. • They do not deteriorate in the oral
environment and they retain their shape
and strength.
• They also provide less retention of bacterial
plaque and are easier to clean than the
elastomeric ligatures (RIDLEY ET AL., 1979).
They are time-consuming and tiresome on the
hand of operator (MAIJER & SMITH, 1990;
SHIVAPUJA & BERGER, 1994).
ADVANTAGES
DRAW BACKS
5/24/2021 7
8. • HARRADINE(2003) found that the use of wire
ligatures added almost 12 minutes to the time
needed to remove and replace two archwires.
• They also require careful tucking in of the ends to
avoid soft tissue trauma and even then can
occasionally be displaced between appointments
and cause discomfort (SCHUMACHER ET AL., 1990;
BENDAR & GRUENDEMAN, 1993).
5/24/2021 8
9. PROPERTIES OF IDEAL ORTHODONTIC LIGATION SYSTEMS
• Secure and robust ligation.
• Full bracket engagement.
• Quick and easy to ligation.
• Low friction.
• Improves patient comfort and hygiene.
5/24/2021 9
10. SELF LIGATING BRACKETS
• DEFINITION :Self-ligating brackets are ligature less bracket
systems that have a mechanical device built into the bracket to
close off the edgewise slot.
• The cap holds the archwire in the bracket slot and replaces the
steel/elastomeric ligature.
• With the self-ligating brackets, the moveable fourth wall of the
bracket is used to convert the slot into a tube.
5/24/2021 10
11. PHILOSOPHY OF SELF LIGATING BRACKETS
• Light forces are the key to self-ligation.
• Proponents suggest that low force, low-friction systems allow
teeth to travel to their physiologic position because they do not
overpower the musculature or compromise the periodontal
tissues.
• Ischemia is not induced in the surrounding periodontal tissues
because the forces generated by the small dimension archwires
are too low to completely occlude the periodontal vascular
supply.
5/24/2021 11
12. • Self-ligating brackets place enough force on the teeth to
stimulate tooth movement without completely disrupting
the vascular supply and therefore, tooth movement is
more effective and physiologic.
• The final position of the teeth with the self-ligating
bracket systems is determined by the balanced interplay
between the oral musculature and periodontal tissues
and not by heavy orthodontic forces.
• Moreover, the design in passive self-ligating bracket also
enables teeth to move in the path of least resistance.
5/24/2021 12
13. • When the gate is in its closed position, the bracket essentially becomes a tube in which the flexible
nickel-titanium archwire can move freely.
• By greatly reducing the amount of friction with passive self-ligating brackets, low force archwires can
work to peak expression and stimulate teeth to move in a more biologically compatible method.
• Teeth movement is also more efficient when they are allowed to move individually, and passive self-
ligating brackets offer more freedom for teeth to move to their natural position.
• Even though they are still interconnected because the archwire they are never tightly engaged with
the bracket slot (Damon, 1998).
5/24/2021 13
14. CLASSIFICATION
• Two types of self-ligating brackets have been developed.
• Based on the mode of interaction with arch wire .,
1. Active
2. Passive.
5/24/2021 14
15. Passive – use a rigid , movable component to trap the
arch wire .
Tooth control determined by the fit between the arch
wire and bracket slot.
Tooth control is compromised with an undersized
wires housed in the bracket.
Stiffer wires are difficult to enclose.
IN-OVATION, SPEED & TIME BRACKETS
Active – use a flexible component to entrap the arch
wires .
It contains the arch wire in the slot and has ability to
store and subsequently release energy thru elastic
deflection.
Light continuous forces on the tooth.
DAMON, SMARTCLIP, OYSTER ESL
5/24/2021 15
16. HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT OF SLB:
• Self-ligating brackets were first introduced in the mid-
1930s in the form of the RUSSELL attachment by
STOLZENBERG .
• The bracket had a flat-head screw seated snugly in a

allowed bodily translation on a round wire.
• While tightening it made it active and provided
root torqueing on a square or a rectangular wire.
• The bracket system was more comfortable for the
patient and resulted in shorter office visits as well.
• Unfortunately, the Russell attachment did not gain
much popularity and virtually disappeared from
the market.

18. • The first modern Passive self-ligating bracket (EDGELOK- Ormco Corporation, Glendora, CA) was
introduced in the early 1970s.
• The bracket had a round body with a rigid labial sliding cap.
• Because of its passive nature, orthodontists found precise control of tooth movement to be a
challenge.
• Although many design refinements have been introduced since, the basic design has remained
unchanged.

19. • The prototypes of the first active self-ligating bracket
(SPEED-Spring-loaded,Precision, Edgewise, Energy,
Delivery) were introduced into the market in 1980.
• The bracket features a curved, flexible super-elastic
nickel-titanium spring clip that embraces the bracket
body and passes through the archwire slot.

20. • In 1986, the self-ligating ACTIVA bracket offered
another alternative.
• The ACTIVA bracket had an inflexible, curved arm
that rotated occlusogingivally around the
cylindrical bracket body.
• The arm could be moved into a slot-open or slot-
close position with finger pressure alone.
• Once closed, the rigid outer wall of the movable
arm converted the bracket slot into a tube. ACTIVA Brackets in open &

the marketplace in 1995.
• The TIME bracket features a rigid, curved arm that
wraps occlusogingivally around the labial aspect of
the bracket body.
• The stiffness of the bracket arm prevents any
substantial interaction with the archwire, thereby
rendering Time a passive bracket (BERGER &
BYLOFF, 2001).

22. • The most renowned self-ligating bracket system was introduced by Dr Dwight Damon
in 1996.
• The Damon SL I is an edgewise twin bracket with a metal labial cover that straddles the
tie wings.
• In 1999, the next generation Damon SL II was brought to the market.
5/24/2021 22
23. • It differed from the original Damon SL I by
incorporating a flat rectangular slide between the tie
wings.
• A special plier is used to open the metal gates
incisally in the maxillary arch and gingivally in the
mandibular.
• Once the slides are closed, the bracket becomes a
passive tube.

24. • The following improvement, DAMON3 was
manufactured.
• It was made from a combination of a resinous
composite reinforced by fiber glass and
stainless steel.
• Recently, DAMON 3MX was presented and
DAMON Q, which are entirely metallic
brackets and more curved.

25. • In 2002, the IN-OVATION R by GAC was introduced.
• This bracket features an interactive clip because it can
provide both passive and active control depending on the
archwires used.
• Round levelling wires can freely move to correct rotations
during the initial levelling and aligning phase.
• While full size rectangular wires are fully engaged into
the base of the bracket by the clip in the later stages of
treatment for better torque control.
• A new IN- OVATION C is now available which has a partial
ceramic face for better aesthetics.

26. • In 2004, 3M Unitek introduced the SMARTCLIP self-
ligating bracket.
• This system is different from other self-ligating brackets
in that it does not have a slide or clip to hold the wires.
• Instead it contains a nickel-titanium clip on each side of
the twin bracket that locks in the wire.
• The archwire is inserted by using finger pressure to push
it past the flexible clip.
• Removal of arch wire requires a special instrument from
3M Unitek.

27. CLINICAL PERFORMANCE OF SLB:
FAVORABLE VIEW:
1.FRICTION:
• Several authors have clearly demonstrated and quantified in their
studies, very low friction levels with the self-ligating devices.
• The similar conclusion in literature about the fact that self-ligating
produces less friction during orthodontic movement, when
compared to conventional brackets, is directly linked to the fact that
self-ligating brackets dispense the employment of ligatures.
• It is acknowledged that metallic ligatures produce around 30% to
50% of friction caused by elastomeric ligatures.
• The placing of ‘figure-of-eight’ elastomeric ties increased friction by
a factor of 70-220 per cent compared to “O” elastomeric ties.
• Consequently, the device which dispenses the employment of these
ligatures, certainly causes lower friction levels.
5/24/2021 27
28. • VOUDOURIS measured the friction produced by three types
of conventional brackets, and compared them to three types
of self-ligating brackets: one active (Sigma) and two passive
(Damon SL and Interactwin).
• When stainless steel arches 0.019 X 0.025-in were placed, a
conventional bracket with ligature “O” produced from 371
times to 667.8 times higher friction than self ligating passive
brackets.
• In a study comparing self-ligating brackets— Time2, In-
Ovation R, Speed, Damon3— BUDD, DASKALOGIANNAKIS
and TOMPSON pointed out that Damon3 showed the lowest
friction value.
5/24/2021 28
29. 2.PLAQUE ACCUMULATION & PLAQUE
CLUSTER:
• Self-ligating brackets promote less plaque retention when
compared to the conventional ones.
• Most of the patients bonded with self-ligating presented
fewer bacteria in plaque.
• The outcomes are related to the archwire ligating method; in
case of conventional ones, to the elastomeric ligatures,
which retain higher levels of bacteria in plaque.
5/24/2021 29
30. 3.ROOT RESORPTION:
• There are no evidences which support some differences of root resorption employing self
ligating brackets and the conventional ones.
• In a comparative study, PANDIS et al demonstrated a relation between the period of
treatment and root resorption, but there were no differences between the groups treated
with self-ligating or conventional brackets.
5/24/2021 30
31. 4.EFFICIENCY:
• The higher efficiency of self-ligating when
compared to the conventional brackets is
mainly related to the following topics:
o Quicker treatment time.
o Chair side time savings and possibility of
longer appointment intervals.
• According to HARRADINE, self-ligating brackets
reduces about 4 months in treatment time, an
average time saving of 24 seconds for archwire
removal and insertion and a mean reduction
of 4 visits per treatment, with the same PAR
index reduction.
• A decrease in treatment time with the self
ligating is probably due to the dramatic friction
reduction.
5/24/2021 31
32. • Concerning the chair side time savings, SHIVAPUJA and
BERGER concludes that when stainless steel wire
ligatures are employed, a mean time of 8 minutes is
spent for the positioning and removal of the wire.
• If elastomeric ligatures are employed, 2.3 minutes will
be spent. If Speed self-ligating are employed, 0.7
minutes are required.
• Due to the fact that self-ligating brackets do not
require stainless steel wire ligations, they normally do
not cause any soft tissue laceration consequently is
more comfort to the patient.
• Furthermore, lower friction levels would reduce the
painful symptoms during the alignment phase.
5/24/2021 32
33. • The ability to assure a safe and complete
positioning of the arch into the slot of self-
ligating brackets, concomitant to the
employment of high technology arches, makes
possible longer appointment intervals.
• Another benefit of the complete positioning of
the arch into the bracket slot, is that the wall,
active or passive, promotes total closure of the
arch into the slot, allowing greater rotation
control.
5/24/2021 33
34. • Besides those topics, there is a discussion about other
aspects concerning the treatment efficiency with the
use of self-ligating brackets.
• Reports found on the official page of Damon suggest
that the use of self-ligating brackets, associated to the
last generation archwires, allows the orthodontic
treatment planning to be modified towards a more
conservative aspect.
• According to this reports, the employment of these
accessories is attributed to the possibility of obtaining
an arch expansion, minimizing the necessity of dental
extractions and invasive procedures such as rapid
maxillary expansion and other surgeries.
5/24/2021 34
35. • CRITICAL VIEW:
1. INVIVO VS INVITRO STUDIES:
• Self-ligating brackets show excellent performance in-vitro especially with archwires of smaller
calibres. However, when thicker archwires are used, such as 0.016 X 0.022-in or 0.019 X 0.025-in,
there are no differences when compared with conventional brackets.
• In a laboratory experiment with a simulated periodontal ligament and rotated brackets, Damon SL
showed no difference in friction when compared with the conventional brackets tied with
elastomeric ligatures.
• The difference between these results against those of the majority of the studies is given to the
fact that research on self-ligating brackets are generally made in vitro, it is limited to initial
levelling archwires and to the fact that the brackets are arranged linearly, and not in a irregular
manner, as clinically seen.
5/24/2021 35
36. 2.FRICTION:
• Several authors report that either conventional or self-ligating brackets exhibit greater frictional force
as the calibre of the archwires increase.
• Some studies have shown that frictional forces may be significantly high and even superior to those
displayed by the conventional brackets when a rectangular archwire was in place.
• Furthermore, some studies report that the severity of crowding increases the levels of friction,
making conventional brackets comparable to the self-ligating brackets.
5/24/2021 36
37. 3.TORQUE CONTROL:
• Passive self-ligating brackets produce less frictional resistance. However, this lower friction may
result in greater loss of torque control.
• MILES, WEYANT & RUSTVELD found Damon brackets to be less painful at the initial months of
treatment when smaller calibres are used; but considerably more painful than the conventional
brackets when the second archwire was inserted, due to a minor freedom inside the slot.
5/24/2021 37
38. 4. CU-NITI ARCHWIRES:
• Somehow, the great difference in treatment time, in the lower number of appointments and in terms
of a painless treatment, all shown by self-ligating brackets is closely attached to the use of next-
generation archwires such as Copper NiTi.
• In a in vivo comparative study, when using Damon archwires (0.014-in and 0.016 X 0.025-in CuNiTi),
the comparison between Smartclip and the conventional brackets, tied whether with metallic or
elastomeric ligatures, presented no significant differences in reducing crowding.
• In a similar in vitro study, now with Damon brackets, conventional brackets achieved better rates of
malocclusion correction and less failure than Damon brackets.
5/24/2021 38
39. 5.HIGHER COST:
• Compared to conventional brackets, the cost of self-ligating brackets is still an obstacle to its
increased commercialization.
• The arguments used by the manufacturers try to counteract this higher price with the fact that there
will be no expenses with elastomeric ligatures which are not needed with the self-ligating brackets.
• However, it must be admitted that this convenience cannot be justified due to the small prices of
those ligatures in the market.
5/24/2021 39
40. CLINICAL TIPS IN APPLICATION OF SELF LIGATING BRACKETS
1.Archwire engagement with self-ligating brackets
• With self-ligating brackets, it is much more important
to fully engage the wire before clip closure by ligature
tucker, or Mitchell’s trimmer.
• However, these only push on one side of the bracket
and may fail to fully engage the wire across the whole
width of the slot.
• HARRADINE, 2003, suggested another useful
manoeuvre to engage very rotated or displaced tooth
with any self-ligating bracket by closing the clip or slide
first, and then threading the aligning wire through the
closed bracket before engaging the other brackets, i.e.
to first convert it to a ‘molar’ tube.
5/24/2021 40
41. 2.Opening clips/slides
• In-Ovation brackets are opened by pushing in an occlusal
direction on the tail of the clip behind the bracket.
• An important point is to avoid getting excess composite
resin near this tail during bracket placement as it may can
hinder or prevent clip opening particularly in the lower
arch, where the tail is not visible from the operator’s
position.
• Time and Speed brackets are opened with a probe or other
fairly sharp instrument, such as a Mitchell's trimmer using
the hole in the clip.
• Very specific and extremely effective pliers for Damon
brackets are called KASSO Damon pliers.
• These pliers are recommended for all first-time users since
they make all slides very easy to open.
5/24/2021 41
42. 3.Prevention of wire pokes:
• The very low friction with self-ligating brackets enables
aligning archwires to slip through the brackets and an
archwire end to protrude.
• This is clearly a potential nuisance which can be
avoided by using tie-backs with flexible wires over
extraction sites to lessen the effects of occlusal forces
on unprotected spans of wire. Another way is thorough
turning in the ends of flexible archwires.
• An interesting innovation in this respect is the
BENDISTAL plier described by KHOURI, 1998. This was
designed to place an effective distal end bend in a
super-elastic wire without the need for over-bending
which can be difficult and uncomfortable and also risks
the loss of a bonded molar tube.
5/24/2021 42
43. • Other options include the use of the CRIMP-ON
SPLIT TUBES available from manufactures such as
Unitek and ORMCO which can be squeezed onto
almost all wires, require no fabrication, are
unobtrusive, and effective.
• It is recommended that these stops are not
placed on a significantly active part of the
archwire as this would diminish the range of
action of the wire where it is most needed.
5/24/2021 43
44. 4.Alterations in treatment mechanics
• The combination of low friction and full, secure
bracket engagement may help in some alteration
in treatment mechanics during the progress of
treatment.
5/24/2021 44
45. 5.Longer appointment intervals
• Full and secure wire engagement of self-ligating
brackets along with the use of low modulus wires
makes an extension of the interval between
appointments a logical step.
• Harradine, 2003, proposed patients' follow-up on
an eight- to ten-week interval basis.
5/24/2021 45
46. 6.Initial traction on lighter wires
• The increased control of light forces enables more
mesio-distal tooth movement to be sensible on lighter,
more flexible wires.
• Moreover, compressed coil springs to move teeth apart
can appropriately be placed from initial visits in many
instances.
5/24/2021 46
47. 7.Separate movement of individual teeth
• The control of rotation during traction on an individual tooth makes this option much more
feasible when required and with more anchorage conservation.
5/24/2021 47
48. 8.Bracket placement and bonding
• Bracket placement and bonding is a crucial step
for the long-tem success of treatment.
• Preferably, both arches should be bonded at the
same session and from second molar to second
molar in each arch.
• For teeth that are well displaced from the arch
line or where there is insufficient space to place a
bracket in ideal position, it is helpful to use a
traction hook to gain some initial control of these
teeth.
• For rotated teeth, it is helpful to offset the
traction hook so that it is on the part of the crown
furthest from the line of the arch to gain some
spontaneous derotation.
5/24/2021 48
49. 9.Appliance debonding
• Debonding of self-ligating brackets may occur by direct failure of the bracket adhesive interface,
cohesive failure of the adhesive, direct failure of the adhesive enamel interface or combination of
any of these.
• In Damon system, the best way to debond self-ligating bracket systems is by squeezing two tie-
wings only with a conventional debonding plier as the bracket will silently float off the adhesive.
• 3M Unitek™ has Distinguished debonding tool designed for the 3M Unitek Self-Ligating Bracket
Systems (Clarity SL Self-Ligating Brackets and SmartClip Self-Ligating Brackets) which may be used
with or without the archwire engaged in the bracket slot.
5/24/2021 49
50. • However, the risk of enamel fracture has always been present with stainless steel and ceramic
brackets, particularly in teeth where the integrity of the crown is compromised.
• Alternative methods of debonding metals and ceramic brackets have been designed to minimize
the potential for enamel surface.
• The main purpose of these new methods is to reduce the force levels during the debonding
process.
• Three debonding techniques have been proposed
1. Ultrasonic.
2. Electro-thermal.
3. Laser.
5/24/2021 50
51. 10.Retention & Relapse:
• Many appliance types have been used for the retention of
post orthodontic treatment.
• The first appliances proposed were based on banded fixed
appliances (Angle, 1907), then removable retainers were
advocated as Hawley retainer, clear overlay removable
retainer.
• Most recently, the use of bonded fixed retainers has been
introduced (Kneiflm, 1973; Rubenstein, 1976).
• These retainers have employed multistranded wire with
differing diameters offering increased retention of
composite.
5/24/2021 51
52. • Relapse is a long-term problem and long-term follow-up of
patients is practically difficult and financially demanding.
• However, Dr. Dwight Damon proposed the use of bonded
upper retainer (lateral incisor to lateral incisor) made from
0.16“ X 0.022" flat braided archwire and placed on the
cingulae of upper incisors to prevent spontaneous
debonding.
• In the lower arch, bonded lower retainer (from canine to
canine) using 0.025 single strand stainless steel is
recommended as well. Clear overlay retainers are to be used
in addition on a night time basis.
5/24/2021 52
53. LIMITATIONS OF SLB
• Full archwire engagement, low friction between bracket and archwire, and faster archwire removal
and ligation are inherent features of self-ligation brackets which have been clearly demonstrated
and quantified in work by various authors.
• However, self-ligating brackets have some drawbacks that may hinder the wide spread in their use.
• First: is a clip that is designed to flex, more prone to breakage or permanent deformation or to
inadvertent opening or closing? This question has not been formally investigated.
5/24/2021 53
54. • Second: the higher profile in self-ligating brackets, due to the complicated mechanical design,
potentially causes more occlusal interferences and lip discomfort.
• Moreover, currently available self-ligating brackets are more expensive than most good quality tie-
wing brackets.
• However, this significant extra cost must be measured against savings in time—an expensive
commodity.
• If self-ligating brackets save any appreciable chair side time as some studies suggest this would
provide an offsetting saving.
5/24/2021 54
55. CONCLUSION
• Although self-ligating brackets might have a great impact over orthodontics, it is important to know
its real advantages involved in their mechanical performance.
• Despite the initial euphoria about these brackets, an evidence-based dentistry should always
prevail.
• Further studies are still needed to evaluate the effects of the expansion promoted by this type of
treatment, avoiding another chapter of relapse in the orthodontic history.
• It should be clear that self-ligating brackets are only a new tool which permits one more clinical
option for both the clinician and the orthodontic patient.
