Progress challenge 1: Researching your industry
For this task you are required to conduct research
into a design company within the field you wish to
work in (e.g. a fashion magazine). You may conduct
your research entirely from information online, but
you may like to set up a meeting or start email
correspondence with a representative from that
company to acquire some of the facts needed to
write this report. You must write a short response to
all of the following questions:
• What is the name of the company you are researching?
Within which industry to they fall? Why did you choose
this company over similar companies within this
industry?
• Who is the director/head of the company? Where did
they work previous to this role, and when did they
begin this role?
• What are the other roles within this company, and who
currently fills them? What is their background, and for
how long have they filled this position?
• What is the common pathway that these current
employees took to gain their roles at this company?
Did they all start out as interns, or does this company
only hire designers with five years or more experience?
• Are there any current vacancies? Propose a strategy
that you could implement to gain these positions.
• Does this company participate in any industry events, like
conferences, talks or seminars? If so, where and when?

Answer
The Company
It is not purely a design company but I chose the ABC (Australian
Broadcasting Commission). I would classify this industry under
Media (i.e. mass media, broadcasting) – this may include
coverage of a variety of topics like the performing arts, music,
sport, education, and advertising.
I have a myriad three main reasons for choosing the ABC:
1. Firstly, it has educational value;
2. Secondly, I believe the network attracts people who want
to work in the arts and media;
3. Thirdly, I could also choose other broadcasting networks
- SBS, Channel 9, Fox – however, the ABC’s influence has
been the most profound because I of the shows I used to
watch and the music I used to listen to.

I came across a position with the ABC, where I will most likely work
on a contract basis (advertised as a ‘freelance’ job), c/o The

Loop10

This position requires me to understand the ABC’s own policies
and procedures, including:

It also requires me to understand the law in Papua New Guinea15
(part of the time spent on the job is in Port Moresby). Additionally,
I should have some knowledge about the Papuans and their
values and traditions. Should I get this opportunity to work in PNG,
it would mean both knowing how to protect myself as a woman
living and working there and trying to accurately portray what life
is like, particularly for the women and children there16
.

Whether I remain in Australia Post, change jobs or start my
practice, the WH&S Act applies in any case. If freelancing, I
would have to draw up some kind of agreement between the

Progress challenge 3: Researching Trends
This challenge will help you research and apply graphic
design trends that are specific to your chosen industry.
• Create a collaged inspiration board, either by hand
and scanned-in, or using Photoshop. The images and
text you use should reflect the current local and global
trends within your specific industry. You must source
each image using at least two of both formal and
informal research strategies and label each as such.
You must communicate your labelling system – e.g.
each image formally sourced will be marked with a
red dot, and each image informally sourced will be
marked with a green dot.
• Find an example of an artist/designer that inspires you.
Create a timeline of how their work has evolved over
the last 10 years with images. Write a short response
about each design describing the current industry
trends featured globally at the time of their design.
• Using this same artist, find at least three designs of theirs
that you can see have a connection or were influenced
by other kinds of creative professionals. Include images
and a short response for each image. For example:
‘I found an image of Victoria Beckham’s current
collection, the motif of triangles was heavily featured
throughout each piece in the collection. This may be
in response to indie musical artists such as Grimes who
feature triangles in their album covers and within their
fashion choices.’

The people involved in its design were Benjamin Franklin, J Adams
and Thomas Jefferson assisted by the artist Pierre Eugène Du

. Du Simitière was an accomplished portrait painter
and had designed the state seals for Delaware and Virginia.
The symbolism not only pays homage to Freemasonry but to
Judaism as well - if you look closely at the Treasury Seal (on the
right hand side of the US $1 bill), you will find a Star of David
directly above the Eagle. This represents Haym Salomon, who
helped financed the American side of the War of Independence

In the previous unit we learnt about trend development, this
Progress challenge will help you apply emerging trends to
your own designs. Answer the following questions:
• Make your own ‘hot or not’ trend board that explores trends
in your industry area over the last two to three years. Label
each image with the year of their debut, and the source of
the image, and then make three lists outlining trend elements
under ‘past’, ‘present’ and ‘emerging’ trends.
• Extrapolate on the emerging trends you discovered making
your trend board in part a. What kinds of colour, line and
styles have changed? What kinds of new skillsets would you
have to develop to match these new elements? It might be
a more advanced understanding of traditional media, like
watercolours, or a digital method to replicate this look in
Photoshop?
• Identify a specific element from the emerging trends list you
have made previously and make an attempt to create an
image that incorporates this element. Detail your working
and how you got on with creating this image. What was easy
to work out? What was more challenging? Identify tools or
skills you will need to develop to further master this trend
element.

and minimalism ever been out?
3. The new materials (for Nike’s shoes);
4. Augmented Reality (If only it did come true, I could easily wear a coat
like that because it would make a good ‘self defence’ weapon in case
someone pushes into me from behind); However, should the worst
come to the worst, there is always farting as a way to make people
‘back off’36
.
5. Recycling – Trendy or not, it is still good for the environment?
6. Retro – because good style never goes out of vogue.
7. Black Magic – because everyone is a bit ‘devilish’ sometimes37
Not:
1. Copying others – which is how some fashions become obsolete in the
first place;
2. Being ‘basic’ – whatever happened to commonsense38
(and is not to
be confused with ‘back to basics’ or ‘basic black’).

a series of different takes on the same trend, or experiment
with a different trend each time.
• Clearly label each image with the trend or trend variation that
you are currently experimenting with. Outline the creative
and commercial opportunities that working with each trend
or trend element may bring you. For example, ‘If I continue
to experiment with watercolour based images I could submit
some of my work to Frankie Magazine or have some images

Industry trends portfolio
In this challenge, you will further develop and experiment with
industry trends by creating a small portfolio of images that reflect
the emerging trends identified in Progress challenge 4.
1. Create a small portfolio of images (three to five) that
reflect the industry trends you outlined earlier. You may

choose to do a series of different takes on the same trend,
or experiment with a different trend each time.
2. Clearly label each image with the trend or trend variation
that you are currently experimenting with:
a. Outline the creative and commercial opportunities that working
with each trend or trend element may bring you.
b. For example, ‘If I continue to experiment with watercolour based
images I could submit some of my work to Frankie magazine
or have some images printed on silk scarves, as watercolour
designs are a classic trope on silk scarves. My work would be a
new twist on a classic trend.’
3. List the ways in which you identified these trends, and

4. Write a short response on how you would like to develop

In Progress Challenge 04, I outlined my predictions on what I think
will be cool and/or uncool for 2017. Let us recap on what they
are:
a. My predictions for ‘hot’: Inclusivity; Back to basics and ‘none more
black’; new materials (for Nike’s shoes); Recycling; Augmented Reality;
Retro; Black Magic39

The idea of creating five images means these
trends are the ‘pick of the bunch’:
A sense of humour
In times of stress, it is often a person’s best coping mechanism.
 Example 1: Triggly Puff vs. Milo Yianopoulis
 Example 2: ‘Fart Rape’ – Let us just call farting what it is - ‘bad manners’!
Recycling and new materials
Nike came up with a new idea of creating new sneakers that
include both style and comfort.
 Why not have dual-purpose shoes that are both good for jogging and
for cleaning41

Inclusiveness:
This is good when it encourages both women from particular
backgrounds42
and those of larger sizes43
to adopt healthy habits
like partaking in physical activity.

Basic Black and ‘Black Magic:
I based these on my interest in Heavy Metal music, my tendency
to wear dark colours and a more recent interest in symbology.
Back to basics:
Two examples:
 Example 1: sleek, uncluttered images;
 Example 2: teaching/retraining people essential skills that may be
lost or forgotten – examples include drawing, health and safety, and
computer skills.
Being a cartoonist, I intend to keep up with these trends via the
internet, the press, and animated film and TV. I intend to develop
those skills via online learning, watching TV, visiting museums and
practicing my craft.
