Protection from threats on the Internet
Threats on the Internet
What does Malware do
Malicious software that is covertly installed. Sends your information out.

 Steals your personal information and
   address book (identity theft and
   keystroke-logging).
  Delivers pop-up advertising while

   browsing.
 Spams your inbox with advertising email.

 Malware will slow down your connection.

 Hijacks your browser and routes all

traffic / data through it’s controlling
Protecting from Malware - Software
• Malware may get installed with “free” software.
Double check source and reputation by searching
    on web.
• Upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3 or
    Windows 7
• Set Windows to install updates automatically
• Do not install pirated programs
• Use the latest version of the Internet Browser
• Avoid installing “Toolbars” in browser. Some
software will ask during install process (with
    default as “yes”).
• Check all the browser “Add-ins”
• Look out for “Shared” folders
• Do not install peer-to-peer “download” software
Protecting from Malware - Media
 Music and Movies are intellectual property and protected by
law. Download only official / legal media.
 Watch out for names like “song.mp3.exe”. By default file
extensions in Windows are off – turn on in Windows Explorer
    view settings.
 After downloading an audio/video file from unofficial source,
you may be asked to download a “player”.
 This is most likely a malware.

 Suggested sources for legal music and movies –
     Gaana.com
     iTunes (Apple)
     music.ovi.com (Nokia)
     Zune Marketplace (Microsoft)
