• Seattle is named after an Indian Chief
• Emerald City is the official nickname, but Rain City,
Jet City, Seatown and Queen City are also used.
• A lot of places/things have Native/Indian names
which are pronounced very different than a
phonetic reading. Puyallup, Sequim, and Issaquah
are a few.
3. MANY WAYS TO SAY RAIN
Drizzle – Light constant rain
Haze – misty rain very small rain drops
Shower – Rain level equivelent to being in a shower
Downpour – Very heavy rain
Sprinkling – Raining in some areas and not in others,
very scattered rain
Spitting – Like sprinkling but much less rain
Sunbreak – when we see the sun breaking through
the clouds
8. EARLY SEATTLE HISTORY
• What is now Seattle has been inhabited since the
end of the last Glacial Period(c. 8,000 B.C.—10,000
years ago), for at least 4,000 years.
• George Vancouver was the first European to visit
the Seattle area in May 1792 during his 1791-95
expedition to chart the Pacific Northwest
• The lumber industry and klondike Gold rush in 1896
attracted people to Seattle
• Then a shipbuilding boom during WW1
• The Boeing boom happened after WW1 and many
people moved to Seattle
