This document discusses trends in tablet and mobile device usage. It notes that the US tablet market has reached critical mass, with one in four smartphone owners also using a tablet. Tablet users spend more time reading news and long-form videos on their devices. Examples are given of brands like Coke and Chevy creating engaging cross-platform experiences around live events like the Super Bowl to amplify social conversations and drive engagement across devices. The document also discusses how tablets have reinvigorated print by complementing rather than replacing print magazines and newspapers.
Mobile trends for the next 10 years according to experts:
1. Experts predict increased integration of mobile devices, sensors, and online services to create new applications that represent personal data.
2. Tablet devices are expected to become the primary way to consume content like magazines, books, and live events.
3. Some phone makers may offer free basic phones supported by transaction fees instead of network fees.
4. Content will increasingly be bundled with mobile plans, starting with music and expanding to other media.
5. Experts foresee major growth in mobile advertising, payments, augmented reality, and "Internet of Things" connections between devices and sensors.
This document discusses the typical stages of culture shock that people often experience when living in a foreign culture:
1) The "honeymoon phase" where everything in the new culture seems exciting and wonderful.
2) The "anxiety" stage where the novelty wears off and small frustrations with the new culture emerge as things no longer seem as good.
3) Eventually reaching an "acceptance" phase where one learns to accept both the positives and negatives of the new culture and starts to feel more at home.
The document also notes that some people may experience "reverse culture shock" upon returning home, finding their home culture dull in comparison.
Keith Flowers discusses his family's migration patterns from Jamaica, Belize, and California. His mother's family moved from Jamaica to New York in 1960, then one by one to California in 1983 for better opportunities. His father's family moved directly from Belize to California, also seeking better lives. After living in Los Angeles most of his life, Keith and his family moved to Corona 7 years ago.

The document discusses the evolution of documentaries from simple entertainment to tools for education and social change. It notes that John Grierson pioneered using documentaries to educate masses in the 1920s, inspired by Soviet propaganda films. This marked the beginning of documentaries being used to intentionally influence audiences rather than just entertain. World War II saw both sides heavily use documentaries as propaganda, and the genre has continued evolving to more subtly manipulate viewers through advanced technology and distribution methods.
The document discusses media influence and how it has shaped the author's life. Media influence is defined as the power of media messages to change or reinforce public and individual beliefs. The media has tremendously influenced the author by detailing how their life would change upon entering the real world and propagating the essentials of everyday life. While the media was created to expose humanity to life's realities, it also influences behavior and perspectives in ways that impact civilization. The author questions how much standards have changed through excessive media consumption and news of dubious quality during the pandemic. In conclusion, media should pursue truth and protect equal rights for all while maintaining press freedom.
The document discusses the media and globalization. It defines different types of media such as print media (newspapers, magazines) and electronic media (radio, television, films). It then defines globalization as the integration of economies, societies and cultures through communication, transportation and trade. The media plays a key role in globalization by spreading ideas across borders, though this can lead to both homogenization and diversification of cultures. A small number of large media companies dominate distribution of information worldwide. The media influences public opinion and can shape perceptions on important issues and events. Exposure to violence in media can also impact children's development.
The document discusses the development and types of mass media. It provides details on print media, electronic media, and alternative media. It discusses the influence and exposure of media in India, specifically mentioning newspapers, radio, films, television, and the internet. The document also outlines three ways media can affect people - technological effects, direct effects, and indirect effects. It discusses both positive and negative influences media can have, such as modifying lifestyles, globalizing culture, reducing concentration, and creating a false sense of well-being.

Mass media has both positive and negative influences on society. Positively, it allows widespread communication of information and events. However, it can also distort or sensationalize information, and influence public opinion. The media promotes unrealistic ideals of beauty, wealth and success that impact teenagers. It also exposes youth to excessive advertising of junk food. While media coverage can raise awareness of issues, it also thrives on conflict and drama over long-term solutions. Overall, mass media is a powerful force that should be consumed carefully and critically by the public.
Mass media has significant influence on teens in both positive and negative ways. Positively, it exposes teens to new ideas and information to help them learn and grow. However, it can also negatively impact teens' body image and self-esteem by promoting unrealistic societal standards of beauty. The overuse of social media by teens in particular has been linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety. While mass media was originally intended to inform and entertain, it is important to consider its far-reaching effects on vulnerable teenage audiences.
Bible and Culture 2016 – Introduction to the OT Prophets and Daniel Tony Watkins
My slides from the first day of Bible & Culture 2016:
- introduction to the Old Testament prophets
- introduction to the book of Daniel
- starting to look at Daniel 1
See more about Bible and Culture at bibleandculture.org)
1) Daniel prays to God and confesses Israel's sins. Gabriel appears and informs Daniel that Jerusalem will be restored and that there will be 70 weeks of years until an anointed one is cut off.
2) Daniel has a vision of future events involving conflicts between kings of the north and south. An especially evil king will persecute God's people but will ultimately come to his end.
3) God reassures Daniel that he is sovereign over history and will deliver his people from extreme persecution, even raising the righteous to everlasting life in his kingdom. The themes are God's faithfulness and the ultimate victory of good over evil.
Bible+Culture 2015: Media 3. Moonrise KingdomTony Watkins
My slides on media from days 3 and 4 of Bible & Culture 2015 (www.bibleandculture.org). These sessions used Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom as an extended examples of film engagement.
This document provides an overview and analysis of chapters 6-9 of the Book of Daniel. It summarizes the key events and visions in these chapters. The document also discusses the genre of apocalyptic literature, noting that it uses symbolic visions and supernatural beings to convey messages of hope about God's ultimate victory during times of crisis. Specifically, Daniel 7 is analyzed in depth, with identification of the four kingdoms represented by beasts in the vision, as well as the "one like a son of man" who contrasts with these kingdoms. Guidance is provided on properly interpreting apocalyptic literature.
Slides from day 2 of my teaching on Daniel at Bible & Culture 2015 (www.bibleandculture.org). This session looks at the structure of Daniel and chapter 1.

The document discusses different perspectives on religious pluralism and whether Christianity is the only way to ultimate truth or reality. It presents arguments that all religions are equally valid and see parts of a bigger truth. However, it also notes that not all religions have the same view of reality or lead to the same end. The document raises questions about whether cultural conditioning determines religious beliefs and whether any view can claim to be true. It references Jesus' statement that he is the way and the truth, suggesting Christianity provides the most inclusive yet exclusively true beliefs.
1) The document discusses how finely tuned the parameters of the Big Bang were and how unlikely it is that this occurred by chance.
2) It presents arguments that the fine-tuning is evidence of design, as it is not due to physical necessity or chance.
3) The document explores questions around the origins and existence of the universe, and whether science can fully explain these without needing to postulate a creator or God.
The document provides an analysis of the structure and themes of the Book of Hosea. It is divided into seven sections (A-A') that alternate between themes of Israel as a wayward wife/son and their unfaithfulness to God through idolatry. Each section also contains elements of God's past care for Israel, their giving Israel up due to sin, and future hope for restoration. The analysis notes it is difficult to clearly identify the larger units of Hosea and this should be considered a preliminary reading. It then examines several passages in more detail to demonstrate patterns around Israel's relationship to God.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375
