Slides from day 1 of my teaching on media at Bible & Culture 2015. This session considers the importance of stories for human beings and outlines seven major themes in the stories we tell, which resonate powerfully with the grand story of the Bible.
This document discusses the definition and types of short stories. A short story is a brief fictional narrative that can create any atmosphere or setting through imaginative storytelling. The document then lists different genres of stories, including novels, short stories, legends, myths, folktales, epics, tales, satire, comedy, tragedy, drama, and anecdotes.
The director is adapting a bestselling novel into a political love story film set during the Cold War. The novel was based on a newspaper article by the director that linked more to political truths than the fictional story elements. Filming will take place at a major European studio to independently finance the production, as Hollywood does not work with independents before completion. The director is seeking participation to fund the independent production.
Both The Hunger Games and The Giver are science fiction films based on novels that contain political messages. The Hunger Games depicts a dystopian future where the wealthy class forces poorer residents to fight to the death for entertainment. It shows Katniss Everdeen leading a rebellion against this tyrannical oppression. The Giver presents a seemingly peaceful world where the government has banned emotions and suffering to maintain order, showing how removing human experiences can be problematic. Both films use their futuristic settings and stories as metaphors to convey perspectives on political and social issues.
Inglourious Basterds meets Stranger Things in this dark and thrilling tale of power, shadow, and revenge set during World War II.World War II is raging, and five teens are looking to make a mark. Daniel and Rebeka seek revenge against the Nazis who slaughtered their family; Simone is determined to fight back against the oppressors who ruined her life and corrupted her girlfriend; Phillip aims to prove that he's better than his worst mistakes; and Liam is searching for a way to control the portal to the shadow world he's uncovered, and the monsters that live within it--before the Nazi regime can do the same. When the five meet, and begrudgingly team up, in the forests of Germany, none of them knows what their future might hold.As they race against time, war, and enemies from both this world and another, Liam, Daniel, Rebeka, Phillip, and Simone know that all they can count on is their own determination and will to survive. With their world turned upside down, and the shadow realm .
Melinda Gordon is the main character who can communicate with ghosts. As the owner of an antique store, she helps earthbound spirits resolve their problems and cross over, which can be difficult as the ghosts are sometimes uncooperative or menacing. The show follows Melinda's life as she balances her supernatural abilities with living a normal life and relationships. It aired on CBS from 2005 to 2010.
Near death experiences have increased with the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. Those who have had near death experiences report encounters with the divine and come back with spiritual messages that are clearer and more urgent, feeling called to share their testimony as the end times approach. Near death experiences profoundly transform people, as they develop greater love and acceptance for themselves and others, lose their fear of death, and prioritize relationships and charity over possessions. The testimonies of COVID-19 near death survivors have had a powerful effect on listeners beyond human explanation. Research indicates that near death experiences generally result in long-term positive life changes.
A psychological thriller is a sub-genre of thriller that focuses on a protagonist's fragile mental state. Suspense comes from the protagonist's mind rather than physical threats. Key elements include connecting the audience to the protagonist's emotions to make them feel uncomfortable. Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 film "The Lodger" is considered one of the earliest psychological thrillers. It tapped into audiences' paranoia without sound or color. More recent influential films include "Silence of the Lambs" and "Black Swan". Psychological thrillers typically involve themes of reality, perception, mind, identity and death. The genre has proven financially successful, with the "Paranormal Activity" films in particular achieving high returns on investment

This document provides an overview and analysis of chapters 6-9 of the Book of Daniel. It summarizes the key events and visions in these chapters. The document also discusses the genre of apocalyptic literature, noting that it uses symbolic visions and supernatural beings to convey messages of hope about God's ultimate victory during times of crisis. Specifically, Daniel 7 is analyzed in depth, with identification of the four kingdoms represented by beasts in the vision, as well as the "one like a son of man" who contrasts with these kingdoms. Guidance is provided on properly interpreting apocalyptic literature.

1) Daniel prays to God and confesses Israel's sins. Gabriel appears and informs Daniel that Jerusalem will be restored and that there will be 70 weeks of years until an anointed one is cut off.
2) Daniel has a vision of future events involving conflicts between kings of the north and south. An especially evil king will persecute God's people but will ultimately come to his end.
3) God reassures Daniel that he is sovereign over history and will deliver his people from extreme persecution, even raising the righteous to everlasting life in his kingdom. The themes are God's faithfulness and the ultimate victory of good over evil.

Stories help people navigate difficult experiences and make sense of their lives. Sharing stories creates human connection and is important for well-being. Our brains are wired for storytelling as it is how we understand ourselves and the world. Stories are how people exchange meaning and explanations. Good stories create experiences through images and evoke emotion.
The stories are everywhere in the world. The characters are scattered all around us. We as narrators
need to pick up such stories and connect them to real life situations. Fiction can be a technique to place stories
in real contexts and derive meanings out of them. There are instances where the storytellers, the writers have
symbolized messages through a storyline that is genuine and realistic. Stories are ample, in profusion. They
have substance, carrying weight. Writers simply need the sincerity of purpose to get such narratives out in
public domain.
An inspector calls - character and theme revisionmrhoward12
Here is an analysis of two dramatic devices in An Inspector Calls and their intended effects on the audience:
The use of dramatic irony is highly effective when the Inspector reveals that Eva Smith is in fact the same girl each character had encountered. The audience knows from the start that the girl's full name is Eva Smith, but the characters do not. When the Inspector connects each of their stories to the same girl, the other characters and the audience experience a shocking revelation. This builds dramatic tension as the audience waits with dread for each character's secrets to be uncovered.
Priestley also uses interruptions strategically to assert the Inspector's authority and disrupt the characters' sense of control. For example, when Mr. Birling is dismissing the
Myths are ancient stories that have been handed down through oral tradition to explain phenomena like the seasons, the natural world, life and death, and relationships. While myths may seem fantastical, they carry important social meanings and lessons. Common elements appear across myths from different cultures, such as creation stories involving birth, death and rebirth by supreme beings. Studying myths helps understand allusions and connects people across time and place by revealing our shared human experiences.
The document discusses storytelling techniques. It explains that audiences identify with protagonists and see the story through their eyes. The hero often experiences unfortunate circumstances through no fault of their own and wants to restore balance. Stories allow audiences to learn and grow vicariously through the hero's journey. Key elements include the hero overcoming obstacles, revealing truths about themselves, and bringing a new equilibrium. Stories equip people to understand how to live and grapple with fundamental human questions.
Narayan Dario Q3 How Do Stories Tell Us Who We Are (Edited Again) narayan886
Stories come in many forms and serve to both define individual and collective identities. Myths in particular seek to explain our origins and purpose, forming the basis for religious and cultural worldviews. While single stories can promote stereotypes, myths and diverse stories as a whole help shape our shared values and sense of humanity by conveying our interconnectedness throughout history.

The document discusses different perspectives on religious pluralism and whether Christianity is the only way to ultimate truth or reality. It presents arguments that all religions are equally valid and see parts of a bigger truth. However, it also notes that not all religions have the same view of reality or lead to the same end. The document raises questions about whether cultural conditioning determines religious beliefs and whether any view can claim to be true. It references Jesus' statement that he is the way and the truth, suggesting Christianity provides the most inclusive yet exclusively true beliefs.
1) The document discusses how finely tuned the parameters of the Big Bang were and how unlikely it is that this occurred by chance.
2) It presents arguments that the fine-tuning is evidence of design, as it is not due to physical necessity or chance.
3) The document explores questions around the origins and existence of the universe, and whether science can fully explain these without needing to postulate a creator or God.
The document provides an analysis of the structure and themes of the Book of Hosea. It is divided into seven sections (A-A') that alternate between themes of Israel as a wayward wife/son and their unfaithfulness to God through idolatry. Each section also contains elements of God's past care for Israel, their giving Israel up due to sin, and future hope for restoration. The analysis notes it is difficult to clearly identify the larger units of Hosea and this should be considered a preliminary reading. It then examines several passages in more detail to demonstrate patterns around Israel's relationship to God.
This document provides an overview of the book of Hosea in the Bible. It is divided into sections that mirror the structure of Hosea. The main themes are Israel's unfaithfulness to God through spiritual prostitution and empty sacrifices. Various places mentioned in Hosea are defined, most located in northern Israel and linked to Israel's history of idolatry and rebellion against God.
This document provides a list of places mentioned in the book of Hosea in the Bible. It includes locations such as Gilgal, Beth-Aven, Bethel, Mizpah, Tabor, Shittim, Gibeah, Ramah, Shechem, Memphis, Baal-Peor, Beth-arbel, Admah, Zeboiim, and Gilead. Many of these places are associated with idolatry, rebellion, or slaughter that occurred there according to the text. The document also notes that "hesed" refers to steadfast love, loving-kindness, or mercy in Hosea.
Slides from day 3 of my teaching on Hosea at Bible & Culture 2014. The slides today include quite a bit of material on Hebrew poetry and more figures of speech, both of which Hosea and other prophets use extensively.
Bible and Culture 2014 - Hosea - Day 2Tony Watkins
The slides from day 2 of my teaching at Bible and Culture (bibleandculture.org) 2014. We looked at Hosea 1–3 and considered some of Hosea's use of simile and metaphor, as well as talking about his root metaphor of YHWH's household (drawing on J. Andrew Dearman's NICOT commentary on Hosea). The structure of chapter 2 is from David Dorsey's Literary Structure of the Old Testament.
Bible and Culture 2014: Hosea - Day 1: introductionTony Watkins
The slides from day 1 of my teaching at Bible and Culture (bibleandculture.org) 2014. This is an introduction to Hosea, establishing something of the historical and biblical context.

1) A worldview is a fundamental orientation or story that provides a foundation for how we understand reality, humanity, knowledge, morality, and our most basic problems.
2) Engaging with other worldviews involves identifying their key components, evaluating their coherence and correspondence with reality, and finding both points of contact and tension with the Christian worldview.
3) The goal of Christian apologetics and spirituality is to lead people into a relationship with Christ that transforms their entire worldview and life, not just their intellectual beliefs.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

13. All stories teach,
whether the story-
teller intends them to
or not. They teach the
world we create. They
teach the morality we
live by. They teach it
much more effectively
than moral precepts
and instructions.
Philip Pullman
14. ‘‘Stories make us more alive, more
human, more courageous, more
loving. Why does anybody tell a
story? It does indeed have some-
thing to do with faith. Faith that the
universe has meaning, that our little
human lives are not irrelevant, that
what we choose or say or do
matters, matters cosmically.
Madeleine L’Engle
15. ‘‘Our action emerges from how
we imagine the world. What we do
is driven by who we are, by the kind
of person we have become. And
that shaping of our character is, to a
great extent, the effect of stories that
have captivated us, that have sunk
into our bones-stories that ‘picture’
what we think life is about, what
constitutes ‘the good life.’ . . .
16. ‘‘. . . We live into the stories we've
absorbed; we become characters in
the drama that has captivated us.
James K.A. Smith
Imagining the Kingdom
25. In a world where
there are no longer
books we have
almost all read, the
movies we have
almost all seen are
perhaps the richest
cultural bond we
have. . . .
26. The best of them
remind us of human
truths that would not
seem as true without
them. They help to
remind us that we are
all of us humans
together.
Frederick Buechner
