2. Preface
As result of the rapid rise inCovid-19 cases in Serbia and the consequential safety regulations implemented by the government, my original script
suddenly became extremely unrealistic and nearly impossible to film. The most significant change came in the form of filming locations, as I
planned to shoot the majority of the opening sequence at school, using my fellow classmates as extras and I cast couple of my teachers in lead
roles (due to their age). All this now had to be cancelled in the wake of the fact that our school closed for over a month long period of time, during
which I originally planned on shooting the entire sequence, and we were all forced to return back to online school. Therefore, the inaccessibility to
recourses forced me to cut down the script once again, rewriting a couple of scene during the process.
I was successfully able to identify two segments of the script which could be seamlessly combined into a singular sequence, creating a mysterious
and somewhat provoking set of scenes, keeping the central and most important element of the entire sequence, the reveal at the beginning and
the mystery being the central point bringing everything in the film together, allowing the story to be focus as everything revolves either around or
due to the murder itself. This unfortunately left out many important elements on which the original script was built upon. One of which being the
dynamic between the two detective’s contrasting in their inner wants and needs, being one of the main loses. Furthermore, many interesting
technical elements had to be cut out as well, such the meticulously planned out match cuts used to transition between different locations
seamlessly and the long single take shot following the detective. Lastly, it’s no secret that the best screenplays of all time work on a basis of set up
and pay off, and I spent a long time trying to get that dynamic right whilst writing the screenplay, setting up important hits and clues from the very
first page.
So instead I made the decision to focus on creating a captivating atmosphere and tone which should reflect that of the entire film. Additionally,
leaning further towards certain surrealist elements portrayed masterfully in the films of David Lynch and Ingmar Bergman in order to more
effectively communicate to the audience the detective’s psychological state of mind.
