Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?
We attracted our audience in the opening sequence by establishing the genre thriller,
this was done by the soundtrack we used over, it presented the spooky, eerie feel and
it ensured the audience that the sequence may not end happily. Also we addressed our
target audience of 15 and up by having a main character who is around that age.
Furthermore, we constructed the psychological feel to the sequence with the props we
used, for example the letter the protagonist received anonymously. The antagonist
was messing with her mind and threatening her which is a typical convention of
thriller movies.
The editing we used also addressed our target audience; we used a lot of contrast and
darkened the frames. This also told the audience what to expect as many
psychological thriller films use this idea to visually create the dark and creepy
experience that is happening.
The mise en scene helped the audience to establish the setting, for example the
establishing shot was of the protagonists’ house and this tells the audience how the
setting is seemingly ordinary which is the case for other thriller films. Additionally
the setting addresses the middle class audiences since it’s established in a middle
class area.
The opening sequence is a mixture of a variety of camera angles which keeps the
audiences interest because they get a better idea and view of the main character. We
also used the editing to add more flow to the shots, so they would look less dull and
jagged. Also the storyline is relatively simple, just a normal teenager going about her
daily routine however with the use of the non-diegetic sound we considered the
audiences expectations as by incorporating this they know that the sequence of events
will not run smoothly. The darkened frames props and editing created the right
atmosphere that would suit this genre; furthermore this is how we kept the audience
interested because they want to know what will happen to her.
