One reason for boring video
• The reason a lot of people are bored in presentations, but also in video, is that slides
like this exist. You might think to yourself that there is a lot of information that needs to
be conveyed and it’s important information so why not add it to a slide so nothing gets
missed. Well, if you have a slide that looks like this you’re going to have a bad time. No
seriously. No one wants to hear me read this slide and also look at it on the screen.
• I’m putting another bullet point to give you the second idea for boring video, which is
information that isn’t concise. Think about it for a second, if I can show and tell you
what you need, do you really need this text. This is probably not, nor should it be, a
legal document that binds me to some strict obligations. You don’t want your video to
be like the pharmaceutical ads where they get to the potential side effects and they
have sped up the reading. Although if you want that effect, it’s pretty easy to do.
• Isn’t this great. We should hang out more often. I’m really hoping you like my
presentation. Don’t forget to fill out your evaluation forms at the end of the session. I’m
not above petty bribery for good marks. Oh, and while we’re at it, you might as well
follow me on twitter: @piercemr I’d love to have more dialogue and discuss in short
phrases ideas for better visuals and graphics. If you’ve gotten this far, wow. You should
teach a speed reading course. Or you skipped all the middle stuff.

  3. Audience analysis is key? Who is going to watch this and what do they need to know. What context might they bring to the viewing?Where are they going to watch this? At work, on the train? At Home? Are they global? Is localizing going to be difficult or challenging? When? Is this a just-in-time video, or watching in advance of a task? Why? What is going to motivate them? Is it required? Is it because there is a greater need? How? At a computer with no speakers? A mobile device? Do they need a CD? How do you need to deliver the content?All of these can impact on the content and what you actually create and how you produce your video. It gets tough when you don’t necessarily know all of the answers, or it is different for many of them. At that point you have to decide what tradeoffs and decisions are you willing to make.
