1. Scream 1
-Use of lighting effects, flickering to build tension. This helps by getting the audience more aware of
something about to happen.
-Making things sound louder than they are, knife being sliced, popcorn popping. The use of this is
helps bring attention and focus onto one particular thing. It is also used to scare the audience.
-Looks back on older horror movies. This indicates that the film is different from other films. That it is
a new type of horror film and that it’s not repeating other films.
-Lead to think that the killer is someone else. A sense of false accusing makes the audience think and
therefore engage more with the film.
-Eerie music, sense of something going to happen, yet again builds tension, keeps the audience on
their feet.
-Standard big house in suburb – teens get killed – very stereotypical in a slasher. This is one genre
convention that is looked upon throughout horror and is used to create a setting of a creepy nature.
-Last girl. This is used for the audience’s pleasure, it could be for the male gaze but is usually used to
represents what is going to happen with the final standoff, who is involved, to build tension.
-Watching TV about murder when she’s about to be murdered, irony. This could be used to add in
dark humour. As for the audience it’s obvious what is going on but to the characters they don’t know
and are unaware.
-Builds up then relaxes – repeats – this gives us a sense that you never know when something’s
going to happen.
-Repeatsback to horror movies – repeats back to the start of the film. This again relates back to the
film being quite psychological in the way that it gets the audience more involved.
-Misleading questions. Gets the audience figuring out what is happening, Gets them involved and on
the edge of their seats.
-Tension builds – dark night – eerie voice on phone, music gets more dramatic. This is all used to
create a scene that will make people jump.
-Comical scream mask being sold everywhere, don’t know who killer is. This is created so that now
the audience will get lost if they are trying to follow the story. Meaning they will have to perhaps
start again with trying to solve the puzzle.
-Always asking questions – keeps audience suspicious of who the killer is.
-Everyone acting strange – backstory’s – makes us believes everyone could have done it.
-People dressed up as scream as comical joke. This relates back to the previous note that now, the
audience are lost and don’t know who the killer is.
2. -Repeats back to murders and how they were murdered. Helps build up a case for the audience to
witness how things happened and to get an understanding of the film.
-Killer hidden in misleading places. Creates tension and keeps audience aware of what is going on.
-Watching old horror movies – looks back on them. Scram is the first movie to do this. But going back
it tells the audience that they aren’t repeating what people have done before.
-Referring back to horror films, same thing happening in other films that’s happening in this film.
-Refers saying what if this was turned into a movie, which it actually is in the second one=stab. This
is dark humour that is now presented in the second film as this scream being made into a movie, a
movie within a movie.
-Talking about the rules of horror movies – how to survive horror movies. Refers to horror movies in
general and in actual fact that are in one, dark humour is seen.
-Things happen in the film their watching at the same time their doing it. This effect is used to get
the character watching on the edge and acting as the real audience acting in the same way as they
both know what’s about to happen.
-Speaking to the TV saying “he’s behind him” – ironic because killer is behind her. Dark humour
represented.
-Killer uses everyday house hold objects – This is scary to audiences because it could happen to
anyone. More realistic.
-Talks about no motives in horror movies = scream – no motive.
-Talking about sequel- which there is.
-Sums up film at end with how it started and ended. Helps sum up the film and what has happened.
-Tells how she would run away if she was in a horror movie but turns out she didn’t do what she said
she would. Irony used but also a sense of dark humour.
-Killers – bobby – revenge for main girl’s mum sleeping with his dad and splitting up family- other
killer – no reason at all. Bobby is stereotypical killer as he gets revenge but “scream” has had a new
take on horror films by giving no motive to the other killer.
