Scientists have discovered two planets, Gliese 581 e and Gliese 581 d, that could support life. Gliese 581 e is nearly the size of Earth and shows that small, Earth-sized planets are common. Gliese 581 d orbits in the habitable zone of its star and may have oceans, making it the first serious candidate to be a "water world". While Gliese 581 e is too hot to support life, the discovery of these planets shows progress in the search for Earth-like exoplanets that could harbor life.
