The Census Bureau has updated its projections for when white Americans will become a minority in the U.S. The new estimate is 2050, eight years later than previously projected, due to lower immigration rates during the recession and more restrictive post-9/11 policies. By 2050, whites are projected to make up 49.9% of the U.S. population of 399 million, while Hispanics will increase to 28% and Asians rise to 6%. The point when minority children become the majority has also been pushed back, to 2031.
