This document describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of triangular metal complexes containing copper(I) and silver(I) centers bridged by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands. The complexes were prepared by reacting NHC ligand precursors with Cu2O or Ag2O. The copper complexes adopt a nearly equilateral triangular Cu3 core structure and exhibit short Cu-Cu distances between 2.4907-2.5150 Angstroms. The copper complexes are intensely blue photoluminescent in solution and solid state. The silver complexes have longer Ag-Ag distances ranging from 2.7226-2.8624 Angstroms and are weakly emissive.
