Science has both benefits and risks for humanity and the environment. While scientific advances have improved lives, they can also be used destructively for weapons and warfare. Even regional nuclear war could damage the global environment through impacts on the ozone layer and climate. Environmental destruction from deforestation and development has also increased transmission of diseases from animals to humans. Global warming further exacerbates health problems by expanding the ranges of infectious diseases and increasing extreme weather events. Overall, the document discusses how science has helped humanity but also warns that its power must be carefully managed to avoid unintended, worldwide consequences.

The ecosystem is the quintessential essence of life on our planet, and this crucial life system is showing signs of breaking down. It is likely a more pressing problem than climate change. Time will tell but time is short.
The ecosystem consists of all living organisms that interact with nonliving components like air, water, and soil contained within the biosphere, which extends from the bottom of the oceans to the top of the mountains. Although unannounced by authorities or professional orgs, it is already becoming evident that the ecosystem is breaking down. Alas, it’s our only ecosystem.

Global warming doesn't matter except to the extent that it will affect life -- ours and that of all living things on Earth. And contrary to the latest news, the evidence that global warming will have serious effects on life is thin. Most evidence suggests the contrary.
Kilimanjaro's shrinking ice cap is not directly related to global warming.
Case in point: This year's United Nations report on climate change and other documents say that 20%-30% of plant and animal species will be threatened with extinction in this century due to global warming -- a truly terrifying thought. Yet, during the past 2.5 million years, a period that scientists now know experienced climatic changes as rapid and as warm as modern climatological models suggest will happen to us, almost none of the millions of species on Earth went extinct. The exceptions were about 20 species of large mammals (the famous megafauna of the last ice age -- saber-tooth tigers, hairy mammoths and the like), which went extinct about 10,000 to 5,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, and many dominant trees and shrubs of northwestern Europe. But elsewhere, including North America, few plant species went extinct, and few mammals.
We're also warned that tropical diseases are going to spread, and that we can expect malaria and encephalitis epidemics. But scientific papers by Prof. Sarah Randolph of Oxford University show that temperature changes do not correlate well with changes in the distribution or frequency of these diseases; warming has not broadened their distribution and is highly unlikely to do so in the future, global warming or not.
The key point here is that living things respond to many factors in addition to temperature and rainfall. In most cases, however, climate-modeling-based forecasts look primarily at temperature alone, or temperature and precipitation only. You might ask, "Isn't this enough to forecast changes in the distribution of species?" Ask a mockingbird. The New York Times recently published an answer to a query about why mockingbirds were becoming common in Manhattan. The expert answer was: food -- an exotic plant species that mockingbirds like to eat had spread to New York City. It was this, not temperature or rainfall, the expert said, that caused the change in mockingbird geography.
You might think I must be one of those know-nothing naysayers who believes global warming is a liberal plot. On the contrary, I am a biologist and ecologist who has worked on global warming, and been concerned about its effects, since 1968. I've developed the computer model of forest growth that has been used widely to forecast possible effects of global warming on life -- I've used the model for that purpose myself, and to forecast likely effects on specific endangered species.

Extinction marks the evolutionary death of a species. Observing the fates of many species ancient and recent, it appears to be Nature’s mechanism of periodically clearing out the outdated to make room for the fit. But is extinction necessarily inevitable for every species? More specifically, are humans destined to meet an unavoidable end? A pandemic will kill off all humans.
In the past, humans have indeed fallen victim to viruses. Perhaps the best-known case was the bubonic plague that killed up to one third of the European population in the mid-14th century . While vaccines have been developed for the plague and some other infectious diseases, new viral strains are constantly emerging — a process that maintains the possibility of a pandemic-facilitated human extinction.

Global warming isn't just a 20th and 21st
century phenomenon
People have been contributing to global
warming since the mid-nineteenth
century, decades before scientists
previously estimated, according to new
research published in the journal Nature.
The study questions the perception of
climate change as primarily a 20th
century phenomenon and provides new
evidence of how quickly the Earth’s
atmosphere responds to increased
levels of greenhouse gas emissions.
Even relatively low levels of
greenhouse gas emissions in the first
decades of the Industrial Revolution
contributed to a temperature
increase, according to the research.
“It was one of those moments where
science really surprised us,” says
study author Nerilie Abram of the
Australian National University. “But
the results were clear. The climate
warming we are witnessing today
started about 180 years ago.”

Previous research has relied largely
on land temperature records from
the Northern Hemisphere to
evaluate warming trends. But that’s
not where early man-made global
warming struck first, according to
the new study. Researchers looked at
historic data derived from natural
sources like coral, tree rings and ice
to determine that the first
“sustained” and “significant”
temperature rise actually occurred in
tropical oceans and the Arctic during
the 1830s. That’s several decades
before most modern temperature
data sets began.
Researchers attribute the difference
in temperature rise between different
geographic locations across the globe
to a variety of climate factors
including ocean circulation. That, at
least in part, explains why
temperatures in the Arctic have been
rising much faster than anywhere
else on the globe—about 16°C (29°F)
this winter—while temperature rise
in Antartica has been relatively slow.
The work should encourage others
studying global warming to
incorporate earlier data into their
models and research to gain a better
understanding of how the world
warms, the scientists behind the
study say.

The viruses coexist for approx. 300 million years with the humans. Sometimes viruses can infect people on a large scale. But how was the current pandemic possible?
Global warming is causing extreme weather events that have led to an increase in infectious diseases. The new climate can support epidemiological vectors for longer periods of time, creating more favorable conditions for replication and the emergence of new vectors.
In the case of emerging infectious diseases, it is considered that there is a border that has already been crossed. Viruses normally have a native area (their "reservoir") from which they should not be pushed out. This creates a dangerous intimacy, with "hotspots" that include locations such as markets, which become real hotbeds of epidemics.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

A good side, and a bad side. For instance, Nuclear
Fission/Fusion. The good: We can use it for power. The
Bad: One atomic bomb is devastating to the planet.
Also, the Internet. The good: We can use it to make
purchases, do research, and share our views and
opinions. The bad: It be used for identity theft, scams,
and porn. The bad edge of science hasn't killed us yet,
but when a crazy enough dictator gets his hands on
said technology, the world as we know it will have
changed.

4. Science as destroyer by war
‘Regional’ Nuclear War Would Cause Worldwide Destruction
Beyond the local human tragedy of such a situation, a new
study looking at the atmospheric chemistry of regional
nuclear war finds that the hot smoke from burning cities
would tear holes in the ozone layer of the Earth. The
increased UV radiation resulting from the ozone loss could
more than double DNA damage, and increase cancer rates
across North America and Eurasia.
"Our research supports that there would be worldwide
destruction," said Michael Mills, co-author of the study and
a research scientist at the University of Colorado at
Boulder. "It demonstrates that a small-scale regional
conflict is capable of triggering larger ozone losses globally
than the ones that were previously predicted for a full-scale
nuclear war."
5. Combined with the climatic impact of a regional nuclear war — which could
reduce crop yields andstarve hundreds of millions — Mills’
modeling shows that the entire globe would feel the repercussions of a hundred
nuclear detonations, a small fraction of just the U.S. stockpile. After decades of
Cold War research into the impacts that a full-blown war between the Soviet Union
and the United States would have had on the globe, recent work has focused on
regional nuclear wars, which are seen as more likely than all-out nuclear
Armageddon. Incorporating the latest atmospheric modeling, the scientists are
finding that even a small nuclear conflict would wreak havoc on the global
environment (.pdf) — cooling it twice as much as it’s heated over the last century
— and on the structure of the atmosphere itself.
Mills’ work, which appears online today in the Proceedings of the National
Academies of Science, useda model from National Center for Atmospheric
Research to look at the impact of throwing 5 million metric tons of black carbon,
or soot, into the atmosphere. He found that when a cluster of cities are burning
together, they end up creating their own weather, pumping soot 20,000 feet into
the atmosphere. Once there, sunlight would heat the smoke, and drive it up
260,000 feet above the earth’s surface.
Along the way, the hot soot would cause a variety of atmospheric changes with a
net result of huge reductions in ozone, which in the stratosphere serves as
sunblock for the earth. In the middle latitudes, the researchers found the ozone
layer would be reduced by 25 to 45 percent, with the polar regions losing 50 to 70
percent of their ozone coverage. This thinning is known as a "hole" in the ozone
layer, and would be many times the size of the famed hole over Antarctica.
6. Science as destruction for
environment
Today we all are watching what Science has done to our nature. The hole in
ozone layer etc. Preventing illness is the best way to get health-care costs
down. So why aren't governments doing more to protect the environment?
We've long known that environmental factors contribute to disease, especially
