Question?
.Which water is the hardest?
Mineral water, tap water, or
distilled water?
Step 1. Step 2.

1. Fill the jar to the
 5cm line with the
 appropriate water type.
2. Add one drop
of dish soap. Step 3.
3. Shake jar ten times.
4. Measure height of
suds, to see if it Step 4.
reaches the two cm line.
 If it doesn’t reach the
 line add another drop
 of soap and repeat process.

reaches the two cm line.
 If it doesn’t reach the
 line add another drop
 of soap and repeat process.
.Independent Variable: Height of suds (in
Centimeters). In order to stop adding soap to the
waters the suds have to reach the two
centimeter line.
.Dependent Variable: Drops of soap. In
order to know when we have reached the
correct amount of soap we drew a line on
our jar. This line is where the suds have to
reach before we stop adding soap. This line
is t wo centimeters from the water level.

If we add an unknown
amount of soap to the
tap water, mineral water,
or distilled water we
believe that the mineral
water would be the
hardest because
magnesium and calcium
are minerals that make
water hard. The mineral
water contains 4%
calcium, and it is called
mineral water which
leads us to believe that
the mineral water will be
the hardest.

Out of the mineral water, tap water, and distilled water, the mineral water was the
hardest. For each trial for tap water it only took one drop of soap to meet the
desired height. For mineral water the first two trials took two drops of soap and
the third trial took three drops of soap. For distilled water the first trial took two
drops of soap, the second trial took three drops of soap, and the third trial took
one drop of soap. Therefore the mineral water was the hardest out of all three
waters. The mineral water was the hardest because it contained the most calcium
and acquired the most drops of soap.

Our hypothesis was supported because we predicted that the mineral water
would be the hardest because it contained the most calcium out of all three
waters and was called mineral water. The mineral water took the highest amount
of drops of soap to make the bubbles reach the 2cm. line. We believe that the
distilled water was the second hardest because it had the second most minerals.
Even though distilled water has been boiled down so all impurities are gone to
minerals still remain. Unlike tap water which has been filtered and filtered until all
it is, is water. That is why we think that the tap water was the softest out of all
three water types.

We think that if we used different types of juices or
sodas our experiment would have more varied and
different results. Only because juices and sodas
have a lot more ingredients and chemicals than
water does. We also wonder what the results would
be like if we shook the jar a greater number of times.
Other than that the results were very tight and there
were no real outliers amongst our data.

When you take a bath sometimes you may find a sticky
film left on your skin. You may also find this film stuck to
your clothing after it has left the washing machine. This
film is caused by water hardness. The sticky film is also
known as soap curds. Soap curds are left over calcium
and magnesium that stick to you and your clothes.

1.We’ve learned that water hardness is caused by calcium and magnesium.
2.We’ve learned that hard water can leave a sticky film on clothes and skin.
3.We have learned that if you buy a special type of salt it will soften your
water. This salt is often referred to as water softener.

For mineral water the first two trials took two drops of soap and the third trial took three drops of soap. For distilled water the first trial took two drops of soap, the second trial took three drops of soap, and the third trial took one drop of soap. Therefore the mineral water was the hardest out of all three waters. The mineral water was the hardest because it contained the most calcium and acquired the most drops of soap. Our hypothesis was supported because we predicted that the mineral water would be the hardest because it contained the most calcium out of all three waters and was called mineral water. The mineral water took the highest amount of drops of soap to make the bubbles reach the 2cm. line. We believe that the distilled water was the second hardest because it had the second most minerals. Even though distilled water has been boiled down so all impurities are gone to minerals still remain. Unlike tap water which has been filtered and filtered until all it is, is water. That is why we think that the tap water was the softest out of all three water types.

Only because juices and sodas have a lot more ingredients and chemicals than water does. We also wonder what the results would be like if we shook the jar a greater number of times. Other than that the results were very tight and there were no real outliers amongst our data.

This film is caused by water hardness. The sticky film is also known as soap curds. Soap curds are left over calcium and magnesium that stick to you and your clothes.

  • 28. 1.We’ve learned that water hardness is caused by calcium and magnesium. 2.We’ve learned that hard water can leave a sticky film on clothes and skin. 3.We have learned that if you buy a special type of salt it will soften your water. This salt is often referred to as water softener.
