INTRODUCTION
The scientific and technological advancement of today is a long forward journey from
stone age .As we live in an age of science, it is essential that the student have a deep insight into
the background of science. people seem possess the seeds of creativeness but climate for its
germination is absent. It is generally seen that our school programmes are not giving due place to
scientific experiences and proper environment.Schools lay too much of emphasis on rigidity and
traditionalism.
Each individual has his own interests, talents and abilities. Even a progressive syllabus fails to
cater to the needs of each. Science educators, now a days are found to exhibit growing interest
and means of stimulating group participation and mobilizing interest in learning science.
Organizing science clubs is one among such activities.
A science club is an out of school hours club that offers children the chance to do science related
activities that extend and enhance the science they experience in the classroom .Each Science
club is different, as the club programme reflects the interests of the children ,the club organizer
and the facilities available. Most clubs use the opportunity to explore areas of science not
covered by the curriculum and to give the club members plenty of opportunities to do practical
science.
CONTENT
Science clubs form the backbone of school-sponsoredco-curricular activities in science.
Our classroom teaching does not provide opportunity for self-expression, constructive activities
and independent enquiry. No time is assigned for practical work. All these lead to the need for an
organization providing an outlet for the pent-up emotions of children and for pooling their
energies.
An organisation which caters for the inculcation of scientific attitude, and a genuine interest in
science, and also can supplement the work of the classroom and give the syllabus a practical
dimension may be called a science club
OBJECTIVES OF SCIENCE CLUB
 To develop a general interest in science.
 To inculcate scientific attitude and provide opportunities for training in scientific
method.
 To develop interest in scientific hobbies.
 To develop habits of exploration and creative facilities.
 To encourage individuals and group activities.
 To develop in children a sense of healthy competition.
 To make the students and public science minded to stimulate active participation and
initiative among students in the learning process.
 To keep the students in touch with the recent advances in science.
 To provide challenging opportunities to the gifted.
ORGANISATION OF SCIENCE CLUB
A properly organized science club will be a valuable aid to teaching science and also a
means of motivating the children for learning science. The successful working of the club
depends on the persons who organize it and also on the interest and enthusiasm of students.
Through science club is run by the students for the students, the science teacher is the pivot of all
activities.
To begin with, the science teacher can explain the importance and benefits of organizing
science club and can arouse enthusiasm among students. This discussion may be followed by a
business meeting in which office bearers are chosen. Every science club should have its own
constituation. There should be a general body and an executive body. The principal or headmaster
should be the patron and the science teachers should be the sponsors.Excutive members such as
president, vice president ,secretary, Treasure, librarian, publicity officer, etc. are chosen from
among the student members. The executive committee has to chalk out programmes. The
activities of the club should be taken up by the students themselves. There should be regular
meeting, discussions, planning, feed backs,etc
Club members are responsible for the programme almost from the beginning. A science club
needs a forward took, it cannot succeed with day to day planning. it is better to prepare a draft
which will be filled out as the year proceds. The club make undertake service project, perhaps for
science department, such as helping with an inventory, or for the schools such as planting bulbs
as part of charismas celebrations.
ACTIVITIES OF THE SCIENCE CLUB
 Establishing a museum.
 Science assembling programms like presenting demonstrations or exhibits to the
elementary school.
 Making demonstration materials for the science classroom.
 Maintaining an inventory of science materials and equipment.
 Repairing and maintaining science equipment.
 Setting up demonstrations for the science teacher.
 Finding resources people in the community.
 Guest lectures on topics of current importance.
 Conduct debate, seminar, symposia, and panel discussion.
 Collection and preservation of samples of chemical compounds.
 Observing days of scientific importance.
 Organizing street plays to conscientise common man.
 Publishing school magazine in science.
 Paper reading on various topics of scientific interest.
CONCLUSION
A science club is an out of school hours club that offers children the chance to do
science related activities that extend and enhance the science they experience in the class
room.
Through activities of a science club, learning of science becomes joyful and it is
possible to develop positive attitude towards learning science .The science club caters to
freedom for expression, where as the classroom atmosphere leads to conformity and
repression. While activity participating in a science club students organize thought and
translate these into action and there by develop a zealous enthusiasm to strive for the
cause of scientific enterprise.
Children have the tendency to make things, break things and handle things on
their own but the conventional system of education does not allow them to do so. Self-expression,
in dependent research, constructive activities etc are some of the
opportunities provided by the science clubs. Science clubs also allow the students to work
on their own ideas, hobbies, experiments etc .Science clubs may also help reduce the
burden of the increasing science curriculum students can learn more through the activities
and their own experiments and clarify general scientific concepts .
The coordination between the classroom and the science clubs will help the students to
complete their curriculum in a subtle way. Clubs are sometimes considered as the back
bones of the curriculum activities in the school.
