The document provides an overview of Scalar DL, a tamper-evident and scalable database system. Some key points:
1. Scalar DL allows detection of Byzantine faults as long as the number of administrative domains exceeds the number of faulty domains. It can linearly scale performance and availability.
2. The system is database-agnostic and cloud-agnostic, supporting databases like Cassandra and clouds like AWS.
3. The architecture uses ledgers, ordering, and auditors. Ordering extracts parallelism while maintaining determinism. Auditors verify proofs of execution without trusting the ledger.
4. Benchmark results show Scalar DL outperforms Hyperledger Fabric for the Smallbank workload on Amazon
Scalar DB: A library that makes non-ACID databases ACID-compliantScalar, Inc.
Scalar DB is a Java library that makes non-ACID databases ACID-compliant through a universal transaction manager. It uses a two-phase commit protocol on linearizable operations to provide atomicity and stores distributed write-ahead log records for durability. For isolation it uses single-version optimistic concurrency control based on linearizable conditional writes. The library has been tested with Cassandra and provides scalable, serializable transactions through optimizations like parallel commit and deterministic prepare ordering.
Making Cassandra more capable, faster, and more reliable (at ApacheCon@Home 2...Scalar, Inc.
Cassandra is widely adopted in real-world applications and used by large and sometimes mission-critical applications because of its high performance, high availability and high scalability. However, there is still some room for improvement to take Cassandra to the next level. We have been contributing to Cassandra to make it more capable, faster, and more reliable by, for example, proposing a non-invasive ACID transaction library, adding GroupCommitLogService, and maintaining and conducting Jepsen testing for lightweight transactions. This talk will present the contributions we have done including the latest updates in more detail, and the reasons why we made such contributions. This talk will be one of the good starting points for discussing the next generation Cassandra.
The document provides an overview of Scalar DL, a tamper-evident and scalable database system. Key characteristics include being tamper-evident, scalable, and able to detect Byzantine faults. It supports various databases and clouds. The architecture uses ledgers, ordering, and auditors. Unique features include ACID nested contract execution and user-defined functions. Benchmark results show it achieves high scalability. Use cases are where data integrity is important, scalability is required, and on-demand tamper detection is acceptable.
Scalar DB is an open source library released under Apache 2 which realizes ACID-compliant transactions on Cassandra, without requiring any modifications to Cassandra itself. It achieves strongly-consistent, linearly scalable, and highly available transactions. This talk will present the theory and practice behind Scalar DB, as well as providing some benchmark results and use cases.
