SCAFFOLDING
SCAFFOLDING
• A temporary elevated platform and
its supporting structure used for
supporting worker, materials, or
both" in the construction or repair of
buildings and other large structures
parts
• 1.standards : vertical members, supported
on ground
• 2.ledgers: horizontal members , running
parallel to the wall
• 3.braces: diagonal members fixed on
standards
• 4.putlog : transverse members , placed at
right angle to wall , one end supported on
ledger and second on the wall
• 5.transoms : they are putlogs whose both
ends are supported on ledgers
parts
• 6. Bridle : member used to bridge wall
opening
• 7. Boarding/Working Platform :
horizontal platform to support workmen
, material , supported on putlog
• 8. Guard rail : rail provided at working
level for safety purpose
• 9. Toe board : boards placed parallel to
ledgers and supported on putlogs
Types of scaffolding
1. Brick layer scaffolding / single scaffolding
2. Masonary scaffolding / double scaffolding
3. Cantilever Scaffolding
4. Suspended scaffolding
5. Trestle scaffolding
6. Steel scaffolding
Brick layer scaffolding
• Consists of –
– Vertical members at 2.4 to 3.0 m interval fixed
in ground
– Horizontal members 1.2 to 1.5 m
– Put logs are at 90° with respect to wall.
– One end of put log in to hall created in wall
and other end on horizontal members
– Length of putlog – 90 cm and spacing 1.2 m
– Putlogs are provided to support working
platform
– For high scaffolding cross bracings are
provided
Masonary scaffolding
• In stone masonary - not feasible to provide holes in
the wall to support putlogs
• So, frames of
– vertical ,
– horizontal and
– braces are used
• First frame/vertical members known as standards is
placed near to wall , other at 1.0 m from the first in
series
• Then horizontal members/ ledgers are fixed with
frames / vertical members.
• Putlogs are supported on horizontal members only
• Working platform is provided on Putlogs
• generally used for stone masonry
CANTILEVER SCAFFOLDING
Cantilever or Needle scaffolding
• It may be brick layer’s type or masonary type
• For brick layer type :
• Vertical member are supported on series of
needle taken out through openings or holes in
wall
• For masonary type:
• needles /projecting beam are strutted inside
the floor through openings
• Used :
• When the ground does not having the capacity
to support standards,
• When the Ground near the wall is to be free
from traffic,
• When upper part of the wall is under
construction.
Suspended scaffolding
• In suspended scaffolding, the
working platform is suspended
from roofs with the help of wire
ropes or chains etc.,
• it can be raised or lowered to
required level.
• This type of scaffolding is used for
– repair works,
– pointing,
– paintings etc..
Trestle scaffolding
• Working platform is
supported on movable
ladders , tripods
• Useful for minor repair
work and/or painting work
inside the room for 5.0 m
max. height from surface.
Steel scaffolding
• Steel tubes are used of 40 to 50
mm dia. And 5 mm thick having
standard length
• Special couplings are used to fix
steel tubes
• Frame of horizontal , vertical and
cross steel tubes are created
• Fire resistance ,Strong , durable ,
erection & dismantle is easy , used
for any height
• High initial cost & require
maintenance as painting
