The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD under Emperor Romulus Augustus, marking the end of that empire. The Eastern Roman Empire continued on and was now referred to as the Byzantine Empire. This split the Roman Empire into two parts, with the Western half falling and the Eastern portion surviving as the Byzantine Empire.
