Film Title/digipak title: Saw    Release Date/Band: January 19th 2004  Genre: Slasher (Horror)
Brief Plot Synopsis from first impressions of the Poster/First impressions of digipak– style etc.  The film appears to be based around physical pain and torture, with pictures of limbs etc, connoting the sadistic nature of the murderer.
Briefly describe the content of the cover/poster / its component parts  The main image of the poster is a bleeding hand that seems to have been dismembered from someone’s body. There is a razor in the background to show the murder weapon, and the background colour is crisp and white to contrast and illustrate the red blood.
Briefly describe the content of the cover/poster / its component parts  The main image of the poster is a bleeding hand that seems to have been dismembered from someone’s body. There is a razor in the background to show the murder weapon, and the background colour is crisp and white to contrast and illustrate the red blood.
Describe the layout e.g. colour/photography/fonts/copy etc  The font is red, relating to the theme of horror and bloodshed. The font is messy, which connotes the mess that the murderer has left behind.
What colours were used principally on this artefact?  How many colours were used in the palette?  The main background colour is white, so that the horrific pictures of the dismembered hand and blood are even more vivid. The font is a blood red, which immediately alerts the audience to the genre of the film.
Was there a specific style e.g. layout / typography i.e. a common look for the artefact?  Describe it?  The poster follows typical poster conventions in the fact that the main image is located in the middle, and the film information is at the bottom in a small font.
What images did the artefact contain?   The artefact only contains one image; the dismembered hand.
What was the purpose of the images? How are they composed – shot distance/angle/framing?  The purpose of it is to give the audience an insight into the nature of the film. There is a side shot of the hand, which makes it seem more real.
What connotations do they suggest?  It connotes an impression of horror e.g bloodshed and dismembered body parts, which will easily target it’s specific audience; people who enjoy slasher horror films. The blood also connotes pain and horror.
Does it link to the band/genre? Album/Film title?  The image links to the film title as both the film title and the image have a theme of bloodshed and danger.
How is the band/Star presented – image? Text – Think representation/stereotypes etc.  The image gives a sense of darkness and loneliness, as the hand is the only one in the poster. This makes the audience wonder who this person was/what they/ how they got into that predicament etc. The text is typical of a horror film as it is red and messy.
What was the tone of the text– i.e. style of language -formal/humorous etc.  What could you find out about the film/band/album from reading the text? Are there any connotations?  Does it link to the overall style of the cover/relate to the band/CD title etc  The tone of the text is unorganised, which gives a feeling of the unknown, which translates to the audience, as they don’t yet know what will happen in the film either, which gives it an enticing appeal, however it is obvious that the film will follow typical horror conventions from the red font and dismembered hand.
What industry information was included on the poster/digipak cover – e.g. barcodes/certification/logos etc.  It includes the company that made the film and distributes the film. It also has logos of the sponsors at the bottom of the page.
Could you tell by the style of the poster/cover which genre they belonged to?  How?  You could definitely tell as the poster followed the typical conventions of a horror film, with the striking image of the dismembered hand and the red font.
Write down anything you think worked particularly well on this product?  I think that the background worked well for the poster as it gives an unknown affect to the audience. This then helps build up the suspense for the film as the audience will want to know what it is about.
Anything you didn’t think worked?  I feel that not a lot of information on the film was given, which could be an annoyance, however as mentioned before, this could entice people also as they want to find out what happens in the film.
