Orígenes
Los primeros datos escritos del Santuario de la Virgen de la Esperanza datan del siglo XVII, si bien existen fundamentos para pensar que la Virgen es venerada desde mucho antes.
Leyenda
Cuenta la leyenda que un pastor que guardaba su ganado en estas cuevas, excavadas por las aguas del río, encontró la imagen “La Pequeñica”, seguramente olvidada por algún caballero cristiano. El pastor comunicó de su valioso hallazgo a las autoridades eclesiásticas y civiles de Calasparra, que con los habitantes del pueblo vinieron alborozadas y quisieron llevarse la imagen para ser venerada en el pueblo.
Dice la leyenda que la Virgen se hizo tan pesada para su tamaño, que todos comprendieron que era aquí, en la cueva, donde deseaba ser venerada, y decidieron, por tanto, acondicionarla.
