On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut before killing himself. Lanza was 20 years old and lived with his mother in Sandy Hook. He used weapons legally owned by his mother to carry out the shooting. Teachers and staff members worked to protect students during the shooting. The victims, ages 6 to 56, included students and staff from Sandy Hook Elementary. The tragedy shocked the nation and led to calls for increased gun control.
