Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2â3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4â5 criteria; severe AUD: 6â11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

2. Opening Statement
âWe are convinced that the only way to truly honor all of the
victims of this and other related tragedies is to move clearly
and methodically toward an understanding of why they
occurâŠâ â Susan and Tom Klebold
Columbine will forever stain history as a tragic and
devastating event. The killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold
were too quickly labeled by the media; taking the easiest and
quickest assumption of the ârevenge seeking gothsâ. In order
to comprehend their motives, one must first understand each
boy as an individual. Although both Eric and Dylan committed
the same crime, their reasons for murder are traceable
through their personalities, past, and are revealed to be
starkly different.
3. Warning Signs
ï The inability for teens to withhold information-
showing off, asking for help, Freudian slips
ï Social isolation â confined to their rooms alone
ï Behavioral changes â depression vs psychopathy
ï Outlets of emotion â journal entries
6. âHow did you not see it
coming?â
ïLoving, normal parents
ïâDylan had made parenting easyâ
ïEricâs therapy
ïHow much can you expect them to
know?
ï83% believe that the parents are
responsible- 6 months after the
attack
7. Thirteen Years Later
ï What we now know- depression and
psychopathy
ï The parents were always around
ï Sympathy for the parents- What theyâve
gone through
ï âThe most lonely people on the planetâ
The O magazine interview
8. Dylanâs Motives
ï Loved explosions and the water â
âŠâwhat a glorious escape.â
ï Uniqueness equated loneliness - âŠâgo
to school, be scared & nervous, hoping
that people accept me.â
ï Seeker â âone man in search of
answersâ
ï Attempted to feel superior like Eric â âMy
wrath for January's incident will be
godlike.â
9. Dylanâs Motives
ï Theft showed unscrupulous nature â Ericâs influence
ï Notebook expressed feelings of âalienationâ
ï Contributed to depression
ï Why he grappled on to Eric
10. Ericâs Motives
ï Expressed his outrage and
frustration towards inferiors
ï Established his lasting superiority
ï Enjoyment, thrill, hate
ï Natural selection
ï âshow them who is godâ
ï âI want to leave a lasting
impression on the worldâ
11. A Friendship
ï No one knows exactly how their friendship
started
ï The leader and the follower
ï Why Dylan needed Eric
ï What Matt Stone has to say about
Columbine and about school in general
12. Ericâs Criminal Development
ï Vandalism
o Targeted houses of those he thought were
inferior
o Oct 21,1997-Broke into lockers at school
ï Petty Theft
o Rental Signs
ï Felony Theft
o Jan 30, 1998-Broke into van
ï Murder
o April 26,1998-Outlined attack on a high school
13. Psychopathy â What is it?
A personality disorder in which a
person displays antisocial and
impulsive behavior, disregard for
societal standards, and no signs of
fear or guilt.
14. Psychopathy
ï Psychopaths are not loners.
ï They put forward a confident, âin
controlâ façade.
ï They appear normal
ï They go for the extra-ordinary look
15. âCharming, but Callousâ
ï When someone catches a
psychopath doing something
reckless, they have the ability to
talk their way out of it, and place
the blame on someone else.
ï Due to their comfort with lying,
they can pass lie detector tests.
ï When caught stealing or doing
something violent, many blame it
on amnesia, temporary insanity,
multiple personality disorder or
blackouts to justify the crime.
16. Psychopathy
ï When someone asks a psychopath a direct question,
they might sneakily evade the answer, by providing
responses, that donât directly answer the question and
bring the conversation somewhere else.
ï In many instances, when caught, they plead sympathy
and promise to change, but use the fragile partner as a
means of getting ahead and getting stronger.
17. Conclusion
Ericâs psychopathy and Dylanâs
depression werenât ignored, they just went
unnoticed. As a nation we continue to
struggle with the motives behind the
killing spree, and we must come to
understand that there is no one to blame
but the killers themselves for this tragic
event.
Editor's Notes
The domino effect?
Is this affective?
The feeling of aloneness is huge for why he and Eric clicked;
Website- 2-15-1998 pipe bombs found in field were consistent with the explosives Eric was describing on his website. Brooks Brown-Parents alerted police of Ericâs website where he threatened Brooks and mentioned that he was building pipe bombs. After columbine, the Browns discovered that the police had never followed through with their concern because they did not get a search warrant, so the case was dropped.Vandalism-Shot BB guns at housesLockers-Eric and Dylan were caught by the school for breaking into lockers, they were suspended for 3 days. Van- Eric and Dylan were arrested and charged with mischief, breaking and entering, trespassing, and theft. The pair entered a diversionary program which included community service, psychiatric treatment, and that they obeyed the law. Murder- Almost a year before the attack on columbine, Eric Harris had begun outlining an attack on a high school. He continued constructing and improving his bombs.** ADD: What does this say about him?
