2. The Effects Of Mediocrity On Work Performance
INTRODUCTION Health Net s Appeals and Grievances Department is currently experiencing
the effects of mediocrity on work performance. These effects can be due to any number of
issues. What is perceived as mediocrity by one person may be perceived as a result of stress by
another, since everyone perceives situations differently. This can be debilitating to employees
and be costly to employers. Managers need to identify those suffering from negative stress and
implement restructuring as a defense against mediocrity and stress. This may reduce the impact
stress has on employees work performance. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The purpose of
this study was to determine the negative effects of mediocrity, complacency and stress on
employees and the methods that Health Nets Appeals and Grievance (A G) Department can
manage employees stress. Health Net should be able to meet reporting guidelines for settling
appeals and grievances. According to California state regulations, we must notify members of our
decision about their grievance and/or as quickly as the case requires based on the member s health
status, but no later than 30 calendar days after receiving the complaint. We may extend the
timeframe by up to 14 calendar days if you request for the extension, or if we justify a need for
additional information and the delay is in your best interest. Unfortunately, at this time, our
department is currently struggling to comply with case closures cases within regulatory compliance

The Nymph and Satyr Carousing is a terracotta sculpture, sculpted by Claude Michel who is
called Clodion. Clodion lived from his birth in Nancy, France 1738 to his death in Paris, France
1814. The sculpture, sculpted in Paris, France in ca.1780 90, created during the Rococo period of
art in Europe . The Nymph is depicted as this curvy, youthful woman and the Satyr as a strong,
young man. Both the Nymph and the Satyr wear expressions of happiness on their faces as they
enjoy a drink. The Nymph and Satyr Carousing uses various textures, angled lighting and a
deliberate composition to promote the beauty of the natural body. The various textures of the

The Nymph is arranged to be sitting slightly contrapposto on the Satyr s leg and the Satyr is also
seated in a contrapposto position as well. The contrapposto position provides a naturalistic
positioning of the bodies. They are both seated on a rock where the Satyr is seated on a cloth
and there is a tambourine and grapes at the feet of the Nymph, (less detailed than the two bodies).
Both the Satyr and the Nymph have one leg raised, and the other leg positioned diagonally
towards the rock, emphasizing the similarity between the two figures and also the difference as
well. The focus of the piece is directed towards the Nymph s body and their joyous expressions,
due to how the body is positioned, the light illuminates the Nymph s body and both of their faces.
This careful but deliberate composition of the positions of the body, the direction of the light and
the attention to detail focused on the body, promotes the beauty of the natural body because each of
the elements work towards making the piece appear more natural and celebratory of not only the
merriment of drinking, but also the merriment of the beauty of the human body. The natural pose of
the Nymph and Satyr, the light showing both the perfection and imperfections and imperfection of
the body, and

4. Roseanne Barr s Focus On Reality In The 90s
Focusing on Reality: The 90s Reality ruled the 1990s. It ranged from a spike in reality based
entertainment, such as MTV s Real World, to the airing of the very real events of the Gulf War on
network television (The 90s). After a decade of excess and denial in the eighties, the American
people longed for truth. The 1990s was a time when the line between legitimate news and
entertainment was blurred (The 90s). During this time, news events started to be shown live. The
U.S. Military chose to show the Gulf War on televisionin order to establish dominance not only
among their people, but also among world powers (The 90s). American viewers were exposed to
graphic reports of violent events such as the explosion of the Oklahoma Federal Building... Show

She wasn t a star because she was rich, or because she had it all together . She was a star because
she was real. Roseanne Barr was the main character of a TV series called Roseanne ( Barr,
Roseanne). She won an emmy for her character and was well known for her outspoken opinions
( Barr, Roseanne ). Her show was focused on a working class family. It was a blue collar
situation comedy (Mayerle, Judine). This is why it was able to connect with so many people.
The plot for Roseanne evolved out of cultural issues and it echoed the most relevant of the
American people s thoughts (Mayerle, Judine). Although the show was extremely popular,
producers were not nearly as fond of it. When the show reached number one, ABC sent the cast
and crew a cake as opposed to the other extremely extravagant gifts that they sent to other shows
that peaked at number 1 (The 90s). The act was a mix of two types of comedy: presentational
and representational (Mayerle, Judine). This blend was popular among viewers. Roseanne was
very vocal and held many strong opinions about women s rights (Mayerle, Judine). Roseanne s
role reflected the growing influence of women in the television community (Mayerle, Judine).
Roseanne used her platform to give a voice to the middle, working class people. She sent the
message to the American public that a stereotypical, idealized American family was overrated.
She expressed her disillusionment through comedy. She wove humor and political commentary
together to reach as large and diverse an audience as possible. Everything was ridiculed on her
show, and she regularly skewered issues that the country viewed as sacred. Her show expressed the
disillusionment of viewers throughout the United States. It opened doors for families to connect
with other families based on their problems instead of the facade they had struggled for so long to

5. Essay on Never Giving Up in Steinbeck s The Moon is Down
Never Giving Up in Steinbeck s The Moon is Down
Machine Gun fire blasts over your head while your hiding in your home, the only protection
available. A slight whistle begins in the distance but it soon becomes closer and closer, its sound
becomes louder and more intense with every inch of ground that it covers. Then as soon as it started
the whistle becomes an explosion killing half of your friends and destroying any thing in its path.
The end is near as your town is conquered and you think there is nobody left to fight. But is there?
This is a short description of what the townspeople of a small European town may have heard the
day their town was seized by the German army in John Steinbeck s novel The Moon is Down
(1942). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two different opinions change the way that the readers understand the story. This means that if
an author wants his entire audience to understand the novel the same he must have a strong central
theme. Steinbeck states this message he wants to portray to his readers on page 15. Steinbeck
writes, Orden stuck to his point. But there was resistance? Yes but it was foolish to resist. He then
goes on to say, but they resisted. This comes from a conversation between the Mayor of the town
and the Colonel Lanser shortly after the German army had occupied the town. The two go on to
have a conversation about what is going to happen to the people of the town and why the Germans
have taken this particular town. This starts the main problem of the story and is the first adversity
that the town must overcome.
Later on in the story, the German army has began to ration the town s food so the people work.
This is a major problem because this gives the army complete control over the town and if the
town does not comply with the wishes of Colonel Lanser then they can simply take the food
away. On page 78, Molly a normal working woman from the town is confronted by Lieutenant
Tonder who is one of the commanders of the army, Molly glanced quickly at the door. She said,
we are a conquered people, Lieutenant. You have taken the food away, I m hungry. I ll like you

6. The Chinese Room Argument Essay
John Searle formulated the Chinese Room Argument in the early 80 s as an attempt to prove that
computers are not cognitive operating systems. In short though the immergence of artificial and
computational systems has rapidly increased the infinite possibility of knowledge, Searle uses the
Chinese room argument to shown that computers are not cognitively independent. John Searle
developed two areas of thought concerning the independent cognition of computers. These ideas
included the definition of a weak AI and a strong AI. In essence, these two types of AI have their
fundamental differences. The weak AI was defined as a system, which simply were systems that

The assumption is that the person is capable of understanding Chinese, simply because he can
manage to assemble a set of answers to questions that would be indistiquishable from a person who
speaks Chinese. The problem is that the person in the room does not understand any of the answers,
but is simply following instructions. Searle utilizes a system s ability to pass the Turing test as a
parameter in the study, though the person would still indeed not understand Chinese. Searle
proceeds to refute the claims of strong AI one at a time, by positioning himself as the one who
manipulates the Chinese symbols. The first claim is that a system, which can pass the Turing test,
understands the input and output. Searle replies that as the computer in the Chinese room, he gains
no understanding of Chinese by simply manipulating the symbols according to the formal program,
in this case being the complex rules. (Searle, 1980) It was not necessary for the operator to have
any understanding of what the interviewer is asking, or the replies that produced. He may not even
know that there is a question and answer session going on outside the room. The second claim of
strong AI, which Searle objects to, is the claim that the system explains human understanding.
Searle asserts that since the system is functioning, in this case passing the Turing Test, (Brigeman,
1980) there

12. Examples Of Selfishness In An Enemy Of The People
In Henrik Ibsen s An Enemy of the People, he showcases and explores theme of naivety and
selfishness lead to the wrong decisions throughout his play with the use of both detail and diction.
With these in mind, he demonstrates the significant value and importance of properly
understanding the truth and relevance in this play. The play begins in an unnamed town, in
southern Norway.
In the play, Ibsen often portrays the main character, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, as an individual
who is not only naive and childish, but out of touch with his own reality. This allows the reader
to perceive these characteristics through his giddy actions and tone of voice. In Act I, Scene I,
Dr. Stockmann returns with company and says, Look here here is another guest for you,
Katherine. Isn t that jolly! (5). The readers very first impression of a man who is presumed to be
professional and will end up taking care of the town, is of a grown man who has just returned
home and is more excited to showcase the large amount of meat he has with due respect as they
finally have the money to share their meat. Later, he continues to showcase his newfound wealth
by saying, ...and we have got a lamp shade too. Do you see? All out of Katherine s savings! (7).
While it is clear that Stockmann is still excited to show off that he has money, he goes about this in
a childish and condescending way. This is one of the many consequences that can result from
naivety. Although, that s not to say that he shouldn t be

You may be asking yourself, what is Head and Neck Cancer? . Well in this report it will be my

Why do people get these diseases? Why do people get these kinds of cancers you may ask? Based

20. Stuart Mill Individuality
Introduction
John Stuart Mill (1806 1873) is recognised as one of the most prolific thinkers of the nineteenth
century, whose liberal political philosophy has influenced intellectuals and political theorists for
decades (Feinberg, 1986). At the same time, Mill s utilitarian approach to society at large reveals
sensibilities and moral considerations that enhance his liberal attitudes in the most surprising ways.
According to Losurdo (2011), it is widely believed that Mill is one of the greatest opponents of
paternalism, supporting individuals liberty and autonomy. However, Mill is also accused of overt
sentiment, ignorance of natural rights, or a diversion from original conceptions of Utilitarianism. As
a result, this essay is concerned with his conception of individuality, as discussed in his On Liberty
(1859), investigating how this notion, based on individual liberty and autonomy, opposes social
control and paternalistic policies.

Mill s liberal utilitarian politics, and their impact on individual lives.
Thesis Statement
This essay argues that John Stuart Mill s On Liberty presents a strong case for individuality of
citizens, challenging the role of paternalism through autonomous social progress and utilitarian
values. On the other hand, it is shown that Mill s arguments against public regulations are very
narrow, and his own ideas frequently adhere to paternalism, thus creating a weak defence against
state control politics.

The Renaissance was a period of time between the mid fourteenth century and mid sixteenth century
in which art, engineering, architecture, and music flourished, mainly due to engineers and artists.
One of the most debated questions that historians discuss about the Renaissance is why and how
the Renaissance started in Italybecause there are no specific events that started the Renaissance.
Rather, it was a string of events with no clear beginnings except for basic ideas and theories. Wealth
and humanism started the Renaissance in Italy by providing a motive to learn, causing art and
engineering to flourish.

and believed that education could improve not only the individual, but also society (Blackwell). In
general, most Italian humanists wanted to look at the literary and philosophical works of the
ancient Romans and Greeks. The Italian humanists believed that the ancient works were the best
guides for living and, more importantly, learning. From inspecting the ancient world, Italian
humanists could compare their own civilization and give them a basis for which they could form
opinions and criticize their own civilization. Because of that, the method of criticism emerged.
Eventually, most people during the Renaissance reverted to the classical way of thinking. This
impacted people, such as NiccolГІ Machiavelli, who criticized people in their leadership skills. He
also wrote the novel, The Prince, which talks about achieving goals to acquire power and leadership
including the ends justify the means , no matter the cost. Humanism also impacted art because the
main purpose of humanism was to focus more on the human

John Paul Stevens was born on April 20, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in a wealthy
family. His grandfather, James W. Stevens, founded the Illinois Life Insurance Company, and his
father, Ernest J. Stevens, owned two hotels, the La Salle and Stevens Hotel.
Stevens followed his father s path in education. At first, he attended college at the University of
Chicago and graduated with honors. After serving in the United States Navy during the World War
II, where he earned a Bronze Star, Stevens enrolled in the Northwestern University School of Law.
He graduated two years later with the highest grades in the history of the law school.

The Swiss based International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the world s largest
developer of International Standards. These standards provide specifications for products,

more efficient and effective by providing common language and criteria. Founded in 1947, the
ISO has published more than 19,000 International Standards for nearly every aspect of business
and technology ( About ISO, n.d.) ISO 9000 refers to a single standard of the same name. It can
also refer to a set of three standards (ISO 9000, ISO 9001, and ISO 9004), all of which are referred
to as quality managementsystem standards ( ISO 9000 and ISO 9001, 2012). An organization is
ISO 9000 certified when it demonstrates that it successfully follows the ISO 9000 standards for
its industry. As of 2005, there were approximately 350,000 ISO 9000 certified organizations in
over one hundred fifty countries worldwide (Rouse, 2005). These numbers attest to how the
Standards have been received worldwide. In a survey conducted by Dowling College of Long

25. The Literary Analysis Of Cold Harbor By John Reekie
Throughout history, war has invariably been the solution to conflicts that arise between two
opposing sides of mankind. As Bertrand Russell puts it, War does not determine who is right
but who is left . The illustration, Cold Harbor by John Reekie, captures the aftermath of the
Civil War as African Americans pick up the deceased soldiers from the battlefield. Cold Harbor
is one of many pictures depicting the losses of the Civil War and, while it may evoke a part of
the disturbances caused by the Civil War, it can never help one mentally reconstruct what the
war was like. This picture aids in elucidating the fallacies of the Civil War by placing emphasis
on the massive death toll and the economic motives that resulted in the persistence of prejudiced
social constructs. The purpose of the illustration was to give an insightful eye into the aftermath
of the war including how it affected Americans. The document seems to create a memoir. Given
that things were posed in a specific way, it seems that the photo was intended to show the
original location and source of the bones. In the document, it shows a group of African
Americans picking up the remains of soldiers who died in the battle year before this. The
remains are of soldiers from a battle because of the uniforms the bodies are wearing. Through
showing the Americans the remains of the soldiers, it gives the war a sense of remorse and
meaning. By having the bodies all stacked on top of each other and the skulls of the

There are many large companies that we see every day, many fashion garments that we buy
monthly, weekly or daily, and many people cannot seem to deal with how we manage to get
clothing from India, China and Bangladesh and into our day to day lives.
While as a society we are too busy focusing on the negatives of fast fashion, we should begin to
view both sides of the argument, and start to focus on the simple positives of how we, Australians,
get our clothes. Instead of people believing that we are ruining children s lives and wreaking havoc
through third world countries, how about we realise the opportunities that we are creating in these
countries, the opportunities for children to earn a wage to support their families, mothers and ...

Sweatshops. A topical point of debate between many analysts and pessimists of the fast fashion
industry. A talking point that has many opinions by many people around the world changing where
and what they spend their money on, while others cannot resist the low prices and choose to ignore
the negative media towards the fast fashion industry. Now we must ask ourselves, how bad are
sweatshops? Who works in them? How much are they paid?
The wage question comes into most arguments, and as Australians our daily average is $17.70,
compared to Bangladesh, almost half of Australia s at $9.
Powell and Skarbek found that sweatshop wages exceed average income in between eight and ten
out of ten countries surveyed, depending on how many hours were worked. Working ten hour days
in the apparel industry lifts employees above (and often far above) the $2 per day threshold. And in
half of the countries it results in earning more than three times the national average! Says Powell,
who has written many books on sweatshops highlighting the positives and negatives in the industry.
In the villages close to sweatshops, girls were substantially less likely to get pregnant or be
married off (28% and 29% respectively, and this effect was strongest among 12 18 year olds) and
girls school enrolment rates were 38.6% higher says the Universities of Washington and Yale.

27. The Perfect Number
People often wonder, What is the perfect number? What they do not know is that there is more
than just one perfect number; there are many. Today s research tells us that there are forty eight
perfect numbers. A perfect number is a number that is equal to the sum of its positive divisors,
excluding its self. 6=1+2+3 28=1+2+4+7+1418=1+2+3+6+9 (= 21)
To answer the question of what a perfect number is you need to know how to solve for a perfect
number, who has been involved in coming up with perfect numbers, the criteria, and interesting
facts about perfect numbers. Perfect numbers are more complex than just deciding whether a
number is considered perfect or not. First, what you have to do to get a perfect number. Every
scholar has invented their own formula to result in a perfect number. The most common formula
is to take the factors of a number and add them together. If the sum of the factors, except the
number itself, results in the original number then the number is perfect. Euclid invented a
formula that is also used to solve for perfect numbers: 2p 1 (2p 1) Ex.1: 21 (22 1)= 6Ex.2: 22 (23
1)= 28
In this formula p stands for a prime number, therefore in the first example two is the prime number
being used. You have two as the base because this is what the formula calls for, and then you
subtract one from your prime number, two, to get two to the first power. Then inside your
parenthesis you have two to the second power, the base taken from the formula

Major Depressive Disorder is a serious mental disability that affects approximately 14.8 million

similar to moderate depression, but the symptoms are more severe. Episodes of this type of severe
depression often occur more than once in a person s life. The symptoms of this mental disability
can cause difficulty with eating, sleeping, enjoying life, working, and studying. A person
experiencing MDD may also have thoughts of suicide. Daily tasks become much harder with this
disorder, but there are ways to help control Major Depressive Disorder. MDD has several ways in
which it can be solved or become less intense. One way people can treat it is by taking

33. Summary Of Norman Rockwell s Four Freedoms
Pictures are everywhere, but their meaning is what makes them powerful. Conversely, a man,
Norman Rockwell created four works of propaganda posters during WWII known as The Four
Freedoms to boost the war effort, persuade Americans to purchase war bonds, and represent the
American identity. Prior to making the four works of art, Rockwell was an illustrator and
painter who illustrated covers for magazines primarily for The Saturday Evening Post, a
magazine famous American company which circulated the Middle class. However, The four
Freedoms collection is what strengthens his influence in American society. Norman Rockwell
successfully convinces Americans during WWII to purchase war bonds. In addition, Rockwell
also successfully represents the American identity through his work of art. On February 21,
1943 The Saturday Evening Post published Freedom of Speech , the first propaganda poster of
The Four Freedoms collection. The main purpose of that poster is to persuade Americans during
WWII to purchase war bonds, and is also an illustration of what was at stake; freedom of speech.
Moreover, his posters were inspired by Franklin Roosevelt s four freedoms speech in which
Roosevelt spoke about his abstract concepts of the four basic human rights; Freedom of speech,
freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom of fear. For example the first freedom,

Linguistic relativity is the notion that language can affect our thought processes, and is often

spotlight. Whorf writes how Language is not merely a reproducing instrument for voicing ideas
but rather is itself the shaper of ideas, the program and guide for the individual s mental activity
(1956:212), and I will explain how it is able to do so. In this essay I will argue that certain ways of
mental categorization, spatial cognition and reality interpretation, based on the characteristics of
our specific variety of language, influence our perception of the world. I will discuss how

Dirven and Verspoor note how the English differentiation is entirely forced on these children by
the contrast between the English prepositions in and on (1998:140), whereas in Korean, Kkita
(glossable loosely as fit ...) is indifferent to whether the Figure goes into, onto, over, or together
with the Ground, as long as it leads to a tight fit (Choi and Bowerman 1991:90).
The fact that the tested children grouped the actions in accordance with the grammatical structure
of their respective language is evidence for linguistic relativity, as both groups of children
construe(d) the relations between objects in the world on the basis of their language specific
categories, and not on the basis of some universal, conceptual categories (Dirven and Verspoor
1998:140 141). This suggests that the children from the two linguistic communities will partly see
the world in a different way, being inclined to categorise the things they see in contrasting fashions.
Certain features are deemed important enough to warrant a category, and different languages
prioritise different qualities. What this means is that when we say something belongs to a certain
set, e.g. that putting toys into a container falls into an in group, we are focussing on some, but
neglecting other details of the situation, such as the tightness of the fit. The framework of our

Accounting Principles and Health Care There are no formal accounting principles that apply to
health care. However, there are five generally accepted guiding principles used in the management
of the financial aspects of health care management (Cleverly, Song Cleverly, 2011). Understanding
the five guiding principles are important in understanding financial information and managerial

Assets are the resources that the organization has and the money generated. Liabilities are
resources that are owed for services, supplies and other things that the organization has acquired.
The ideal goal of any business is for the assets to be greater than the liabilities (Cleverly et. al.).
Duality Duality is a simple mathematical equation or rather, it seems simple. The equation states,
The value of assets must always equal the combined value of liabilities and residual interest,
which we have called net assets. (Cleverly et. al. pg. 185 para.1) This requires balancing reports
about changes in either side of the equation. In health care, for instance, changes such as buying
supplies, receiving payment for services, or paying the electric bill are all transactions that
require balancing the books, so to speak, so that the equation is still equal. Cost Valuation Cost
Valuation can be defined as choosing the right price for services, supplies and other things of
value (Hutton, 2005). Choosing the right price may be based on the history of what the entity
has paid that is reflected by money measurement or may be based on other measures of what a
cost should be (Cleverly et. al.). Market value is a way to assess a cost value. This seems to be
favorite way with many organizations. This method is not considered

39. Summary Of Too Many People Are Going To College
The standard way of thinking about college has often given the impression that education will open
doors. College is foretold to be the wisest choice a student can make to better their future with a
successful, high paying job. Yet Charles Murray, author of the article Too Many People Are Going
To College, introduces a controversial side to the argument, believing that the decision for students
to attend college is one of great importance, but the choice may be made too soon. Murray
emphasizes the reasons why this situation exists and continues to be proven true in today s society
with factors such as the misleading statements to students about college and the high academic
standards students must conform to. In discussions of Charles Murray, he expresses his opinion on
the thoughts and feelings that are being transferred to students before college, claiming them to be
misleading. Murray brings to light the problem that exists in the constant pushing of guidance
counselors, teachers, and even politicians to aspire for a college degree no matter what, treating
every failure to go to college as an injustice (Murray 48). Yet, by doing so, parents and students are
often blindsided by the overwhelming cost of college that many cannot afford, or the sheer amount
of education students would put themselves through for no reason at all. Murray observes that one
aspect of this phenomenon has been labeled misaligned ambitions, meaning that adolescents have
career ambitions that are inconsistent with their educational plans (Murray 48). Convincing
students that college is the only guiding light to a better life forces students to see college as such,
an intellectual heaven where they can become anything, such as a doctor or an attorney without
understanding the educational hurdles they must surmount to achieve their goal (Murray 48 49).
They then attend a four year universitywith the depiction of college as a place where B.A.s are
handed out fresh in their minds, thoughtless as to if that particular college they are attending even
has the educational requirements needed to complete their career goals (Murray 49). Unfortunately,
as Murray reminds us, this is the system that is in place. For a brutal fact

40. Whale Rider Reflection
The film Whale Rider takes A large portion of the film fixates on the dynamic of this connection
amongst Koro, the tribal chief, and his granddaughter Paikea. Paikea respects her grandfather, and
has a puzzling association with the tribe s ancestry; her namesake, Paikea the Whale Rider,
travelled from Hawaii to New Zealandon the back of a whale. Paikea spends the most of the film
trying to prove her worth and gain respect from her grandfather. Unlike many of the other tribal
youth, she reveres the ancestral tribe s dances and songs, and becomes highly skilled in both.
She is exceptionally proud of her heritage and is finally given the opportunity to prove herself
when a pod of whales become beached on the local shore. Mirroring her namesake, Paikea rides
the largest whale back into the waves, saving the pod from disaster and death. At the end of the
film, her strength, courage, and supernatural appointment as future chief is enough to convince
Koro of her leadership abilities, and a new generation of Maori is given hope and guidance for the
future. Maori traditions take central stage throughout the film. Each of the film s characters
struggles with these customs. For instance, Koro is more reluctant to give up or bend traditional
rules and practices. From the outset of the film, Koro is primarily concerned with the continuation
of the royal bloodline via a grandson. When only his granddaughter survives, he is not only bitter
towards her, but he is also preoccupied with remedying the situation for the sake of his people. He
is not only adamant in upholding the patriarchal leadership tradition, but the tribe chief dynamic, in
general, that many in his society have abandoned in practice and principle. Still clinging to this
way of life, he and members of the elder generation take action in an attempt to fill the leadership
void. At one point, it is decided by the elder council that a school, dedicated to the traditional
teachings and cultural elements once so vital to Maori society and leadership, specifically, be
opened to the male youths of the community. Here, Koro may conduct a formal search for the next
tribal chief, while adequately equipping all male candidates with the knowledge and practice of

In the earlier stages of The Toulmin model it was used in debate manuals. The Toulmin model
analyzes the strength and weaknesses of any argumentation. The Toulmin model has advanced into
the rhetorical interpretation of literary texts. This tool is used for developing, examining, and
classifying arguments. There are six parts of the model of argumentfrom the claim, data, warrant,
backing, modality, and rebuttal. The claim is the position or claim, which is argued for the
deduction of the argument. For example a claim would be cars over 20 years old shouldn t be
allowed on the road. The data are the foundation or basis for the claim, the support. An example
of data would be older vehicles pollute the environment and are less safe than newer car models.
The warrant is also mentioned as the bridge, it is a description of why or how the data supports the
claim, the underlying assumptions that links the data to the claim. An example of warrant would
be removing the older car models from the road, and would drastically improve the

42. Essay Raphael s Portrait Leo X with Cardinals Guilio de ...
In Nelson Minnich s religious interpretation of Raphael s famous portrait of Pope Leo X,
Minnich first begins with the very basics of the portrait; what is contained within its canvas and
why it is there. From small clues such as these, he is able to lay the foundation for which
theories and conclusions can be based. He first points out the location of the figures in the
painting. Minnich believes that they are in a large room, seated before a green cloth on the wall,
or cloth of honor. There is some speculation, however, as to exactly where this room is located.
Several theorists, as well as he, believe that the location is a room in the Vatican, perhaps the
library. He points out that there is reflection of a window in several objects... Show more content on

Leo would have needed the glass to read the next item on the table, his bible. The bible is
obviously not an unlikely item, being that it is a portrait of a pope, but it is where the bible is
opened to that is of importance; St. John s Gospel. Minnich tells us that Leo s first baptismal
name was Giovanni, a name that came from this gospel. After inspecting the painting for obvious
clues and symbols, Minnich is ready to discuss the possible reasons for the paintings existence.
The first being the obvious, that it is merely a papal state portrait. He points out several reasons
that this could be a wrong assumption. The painting was kept in Florence and not in Rome, like
most papal portraits. It was much smaller than an average state portrait. And the most obvious
objection was that there were three people present in the painting, which is highly unusual for a
portrait. Minnich then suggests the possibility that Raphael was merely painting a family portrait.
But then he quickly points out that no other of Leo s relatives was involved. He also points out
that the items involved, a bell, the bible, are not usually in state portraits. With the state portrait
theory clearly discredited, Minnich tells readers of the theory that the painting is simply an
occasional piece, saying that it was painted just to be displayed at the wedding of the Medici and
Valois houses in lieu of the pope and his two relatives not being able to make the festivities.
Minnich states that

Assignment 8: Jewish Identity
A.What is the criteria for being Jewish? What does it mean to be Jewish?
When looking at Judaism, one has to go far back to biblical times to fully understand its origins. It
started with the Hebrew people in the country of Israel. The bloodline of Abraham, Issac, and
Jacob is what constitutes people as being Jewish. Being classified as a Jew, or a Jewish citizen
has more to do with family ties, then what you believe in. The standard for being considered
Jewish is that you have to be born to a Jewish mother. Some sects of Judaism like to include being
born to a Jewish father as part of being Jewish. It can be looked at as more of a nationality or an

Those who followed Bar Kochba, Shabbatai Tzv, and Lubavith strongly believed that they were
the messiah. These people were rabbis, many of the Jewish faith strongly believed in the words
that they were saying. They truly thought that they were the messiah. Many Jewish people still

44. Water Quality Analysis Of The Potable And Environmental Water
In this research project I conducted the water quality analysis of both the potable and
environmental water at various village sites, and in the New River Lagoon in Belize. The data
collected in this project contributed to the data collected over the past decade by previous
McMaster fellows and scholars. Moreover, we conveyed the results from this study to the
community partners in the villages San Carlos, Rancho Dolores, and with the Programme for
Belize the managing entity of Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area ( RBCMA ) which
borders the New River Lagoon. In the project we tested for bacterial contaminants, nitratenitrogen,
phosphorous, dissolved oxygen, pH, free chlorine, and ammonia levels.
In this project we continue to analyze new samples and the baseline data for any trends in high or
low levels of chemicals, as well as to keep the Belizean community appraised of any hazards or
precautions they should be taking for their drinking water. By collaborating with our Belize
community partners, we are able to discuss possible solutions as to better techniques for cleaner
water or more efficient solutions to using clean safe drinking water.
Water is a necessity, but, when water becomes polluted with chemicals, both inorganic and
organic, it makes it difficult to use water for the health benefits and sanitation it is normally used
for. Good water quality is especially vital for Belize, as they are largely an agricultural country.
The data collected by the McMaster

45. The Pros And Cons Of The Drinking Age
When picturing college people should think about huge classrooms, hard professors, and a
better learning experience than they have ever received before. In reality, two things come to
everyone s mind before anything else: partying every night and binge drinking. The United
States has some of the highest rates of underage drinking and hospitalizations due to alcohol
poisoning. In Barrett Seaman s article, How Bingeing Became the New College Sport, Seaman
argues that continuously adding more restrictions to the drinking law could be making the issue
worse or causing the entire problem. By focusing on college binge drinking, Seaman convinces
his readers that instead of twenty one, the US should lower the drinking age to promote
appropriate drinking habits. The drinking age set at eighteen was not originally an issue. In the
late 60s, the voting age was changed to eighteen; privacy laws were enacted; and the drinking
age, depending on each states decision, was lowered to eighteen as the new age that legally
defined adulthood (Seaman 1 2). Then in 1984, Congress was influenced by Mothers Against
Drunk Driving to pass a law that combined compliance of the states with federal aid highway funds
in exchange for the members support; forcing the states to raise the drinking age to twenty one.
There is no doubt that the law, which achieved full 50 state compliance in 1988, saved lives, but it
had the unintended consequence of creating a covert culture around alcohol as the young

psychological impact. At last, something great is happening in our lives , this opening state of

The lack of characterization in the documentary positions the viewer to focus on the facts and

48. The Pros And Cons Of Poverty In The United States
Poverty rates in the United States are at their highest in the extremely urban and truly rural areas
of the country. However, poverty rates, as measured by the Department of Agriculture s
Economic Research Service, are higher in non metro areas as compared to metropolitan centers.
The demographics of poverty offer insight for future policy considerations to both public
administrators and policy writers beyond the demographics of simply rural versus metro
citizens. For example, in 2016 rural White citizens were half as likely to live in poverty as either
Black or Native American citizens. In addition, a female head of household in a rural area is
nearly eight times as likely to live in poverty as a married couple. Couple these demographics
with the fact that only 46 million citizens live in nonmetro areas roughly 15% of the national
population it is not surprising that rural areas seem to receive less attention by federally elected
officials than urban and suburban areas with few, if any, programs geared specifically to known
problem characteristics. At the county level, poverty as defined by the US government is an
immensely rural problem, with the most remote rural places at the greatest disadvantage. It
would seem obvious that where and how an individual lives would matter in a person s ability to
rise above the poverty level. However, federal policy that addresses poverty is not specific to rural
areas or metropolitan areas an instead is agnostic to

airport security does succeed in this, then the chances of any dangerous situations, illegal items or

Beginning in December 1972, the Federal Aviation Administration required airlines to scan all
passengers with metal detectors in an attempt to stop hijackers from carrying concealed guns

screening of passengers, TSA officers are empowered to perform pat down screenings and
baggage searches for any passenger that they feel requires additional screening. If the owners
bag is locked TSA can cut or break the lock if the owner is unwilling to open it can open it. In
addition to TSA screening measures, airlines are still responsible for checking passenger
information against government issued watch lists intended to flag potentially dangerous
travelers. Just fifteen years ago on September 11, 2001 four U.S. planes were hijacked. Two of
the hijacked planes crashed in the world trade center, while another one crashed in a field in
Pennsylvania, and the other one crashed into the Pentagon. Airport security is a really big
problem in the world. Almost three thousand people were killed on that day. That was one of the
saddest days in America, but it also made the country stronger and realizes that airport security is
a major thing that needs to be addressed. Hijacking started in about 1933 and is still going on to

50. Disadvantages Of New Public Management
Date of Submission: 22 OCT 2015
New Public Management has emerged as a reaction to the exiting bureaucratic model in public
administration in the twentieth century. (Matei L 2006,p. 143)
It reforms the government s external and internal conditions, such as changing policy to
management, from spending to reduce costs. NPM aims at improving effectiveness and efficiency
of performance by a great variety of different organizational, managerial and accounting reforms
(Tom Groot, 2004).
NPM implies a new set of values that is largely drawn from market economics and business
management (Denhardt Denhardt, 2015, p.22). It makes good use of private sector and also
business management approaches to reduce public size in which the government resource ... Show

Meanwhile, government can focus more on policy, regulatory and statutory functions.
Looking over to the disadvantages of NPM in outsourcing, the aspects of social impact and
government image are the main problems to be faced.
Firstly on social impact, the contract workers rights will be exploited since most contractors tend
to put cost reducing as their first priority. In which the welfare of workers will be ignored.
Welfare of workers will be subject to even more severe exploitation if it comes to subcontracting.
In long term, it may lead to worker strikes when the rights of worker suffer for a long time, social
harmony and stability will be undermined.
Secondly, the prestige of government governance will be affected. Since outsourcing is generally
goes to the lowest bid, the outsourced workers are subject to low wages and unreasonable low
welfare. Under the pretext of saving costs, government is actually shirking responsibility and
taking lead in the exploitation of the grass rooted class. Resulting in a large number of workers
being exploited, government is accused of harboring

51. The Figurative Language In Raymond Carver s Cathedral
Raymond Carver s Cathedral (1983), uses elements such as tone, which is the author s attitude
toward a subject and style, which describes the ways that the author uses words the author s
word choice, sentence structure, figurative language, and sentence arrangement, to create a
main character who inhabits all the qualities of an antihero, in order to establish his ignorance
towards a blind man whom he reluctantly welcomes into his home. Carver initially presents the
husband, who is also the narrator, as a jealous, pity less man who is insecure in his relationship
with his wife. The initial tone of the story starts off as jarring and very insensitive, where the
husband makes prejudice assumptions about the blind man and his life. Carver develops the
story and his character progression through crafty language and a shift in tones throughout the
length of the story that drastically changes the entire feeling of the story. Cathedral shows the
development of a narrator who has been placed in what seems, at first to be an awkward
situation which ends up, instead, being a moment of true revelation. Carver depicts the story in
a rather strident tone, making the narrator, appear as the antihero, though some may view his
character as somewhat humorous, and straightforward, his tone is initially very harsh and
ignorant. Carver said himself that the narrator albeit having many prejudices against blind
people, he changes; he grows out of those narrow minded ways. The story follows the lives of
three main characters; the narrator who lacks a name, his wife and his wife s blind friend,
Robert. The narrator is initially openly critical and uneducated towards the blind man and his
perception of the world, but towards the end of the story we see him becoming more accepting
of the man whom he once saw as strange and even pathetic for not ever having seen his wife who
died of cancer, he says, I m imagining now her last thought maybe this: that he never even knew
what she looked like, and she on an express to the grave. Robert was left with a small insurance
policy and half of a twenty peso Mexican coin. The other half of the coin went into the box with
her. Pathetic. (168) The story s style itself is told in a very

52. Drinking Sports Drinks
Do you assume teenage athletes prefer sports drinks over water, since they are drinks for sports?
Water is a natural resource, and it is vital for all living organisms to survive. Furthermore, water
can help people, especially athletes in many ways. Water helps maintain your bodyweight, cool
you down, keep you hydrated, and much more. On the other hand, sports drinks contain many
harmful ingredients, more importantly, sugars. Some may argue that sports drinks help athletes
improve their performance alternatives. However, water is a much better choice since it is
even healthier, safer, and it keeps not only athletes hydrated, but other people as well. First of
all, teenage athletes are easily influenced by people, especially professional athletes. They would
imitate what professional athletes do. For example, according to the article Are Sports Drinks
Healthier Than Soda Teens Think So by Nancy Shute, the author states that teenage athletes only
care about drinks that are marketed, And teens think of sports drinks as being healthy probably
because of the big bucks poured into marketing them as the beverage of choice among
professional athletes , (Shute 8). Teenagers expect drinking sports drinks will cause them to
improve their skills and be or become like professional athletes who are drinking them. However,
water is not marketed like sports drinks, but it is crucial because it is capable at keeping you
hydrated in many ways such as balancing your body fluid when

Snapchat s Technological Disruption in the Social Media Industry Throughout the past two

interaction from a distance, easy accessible information, and personal satisfaction from its
entertainment. Facebook introduced photography in social media, Twitter s purpose was to
have a status consisting of short, written expressions, and Instagram introduced filters into
sharing photos and videos. Due to technological advances, each of these companies have been
able to change society s use of social media overtime. However, one hot and new company has
been able to technologically disrupt the social media industry by giving their user a
tremendously different experience with digital interaction. This modern social media juggernaut
was founded by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown in 2011 (Brown no longer has
affiliation with the company). Snapchat is an application designed for one to share photos and
videos which disappear in a maximum of ten seconds. This allows its users to send or post any
information without having to stress about others judgement or the fear of regret. In an interview
with The Telegraph, Spiegel mentions one key reason why he created Snapchat: Snapchat changed
that perception of deleting something as bad. Online typically you delete something if it s bad or
if it s really embarrassing. What Snapchat said was if we try to model conversations as they occur

55. Characters In Alice Munro s Differently
In Alice Munro s short story Differently, the main character Georgia recounts memories of Maya
and their fallout when she visits her friend s widowed husband many years later. Upon her visit, her
mind is flooded with memories of friendship, infidelity, and broken trust which inevitably
disconnected her from Maya and Ben (Georgia s husband). Throughout the text, the author
highlights the main character s inability to filter through many details as she describes the end of
various relationships following Maya s betrayal. The author s thorough description of settings,
characters, and events emphasizes Georgia s difficulty in focusing on what details of her life are
important, as most of them seem important to her.
The opening words of Alice Munro s Differently introduce the style the author uses throughout the
short story: Georgia once took a creative writing course, and what the instructor told her was: Too
many things. Too many things going on at the same time; also too many people [...] What do you
want us to pay attention to? Think (Munro 1). These lines echo in the mind of the reader as they
dive further into the text, reading about too many things and meeting too many people.
Munro introduces Georgia, Raymond, Maya, Ben, Harvey, Anne, Hilda and her former creative
writing instructor all within the first few pages. The role of each character (aside from the creative
writing instructor) is clouded with the details of their physical appearance or small mannerisms.
