2. Hydrostatic Force on a Plane Surface
September 26, 2003
CVEN 3313 Theoretical Fluid Mechanics
Module#1:
1 1. OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this module is to investigate hydrostatic forces on a plane surface
under partial and full submersion.
2 2. DESCRIPTION
The apparatus shown in Figure 1 will be used. It consists of a quarter circle block
attached to a cantilevered arm with a rectangular surface on the other end. The pivot
point on the arm corresponds to the center of radius of the block. With no water in
the tank, and no weights on the scale, the arm is horizontal. As weights are added
one by one to the scales, water can be added to the tank so that the hydrostatic force
balances the weights and bring the arm back to horizontal.
3 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Note on your table when the plane surface is no longer fully submerged.
6 4. RESULTS ANALYSIS
1) Derive equations for the mass (Mtheoretical) that balances the hydrostatic force
for the partially submerged case. (i.e. h less than a) Mtheoretical = f(a, b, g, k, h, L,
Оіw)
2) Derive equations for the mass (Mtheoretical) that balances the hydrostatic force
for the fully submerged case. (i.e. h greater than a) Mtheoretical = f(a, b, g, k, h, L,
Оіw)
3) Compute Mtheoretical for each value of h you measured. Tabulate h, Mactual,
Mtheoretical, and other data you obtained.
4) Plot Mactual vs h and Mtheoretical vs h on the same graph (h on the x axis.)
What does the shape of the graph indicate about the hydrostatic force for each case
(partially and fully submerged)?
5) Plot Mactual vs Mtheoretical .
7 5. DISCUSSION
1) Compare and discuss actual and theoretical results. Are they similar? If there is
any discrepancy, what are possible sources of error?
2) State qualitatively why an incremental change in mass (i.e. 50 g) for the fully
3. submerged case results in a different change in height, О”h, than the same
incremental change in mass for the partially submerged case.
3) In this experiment, only the forces on the plane surface were considered. Do the
hydrostatic forces on the curved surface of the quarter circle block affect the
measurement? State why or why
4. Caregivers Behavior Contributes to Offspring Behavior
Caregivers Behavior Contributes to Offspring Behavior
The field of violence prediction research has advanced to the point where
predictions about serious criminal violence by men who have already committed
one violent offense can be made with a considerable degree of accuracy (Rice,
414). This group, although a small proportion of the population, is a group whose
violence is the focus of much societal concern. Research on the nature of
psychotherapy is yielding new insights into a group of offenders who are highly
prone to violence. There is every reason to believe that applying the results of
violence research to make policy changes in the criminal justice system would make
society safer.

Children whose caregivers are consistently inaccessible or rejecting tend to develop a
strategy of minimizing the output of attachment behavior (Main, l990). These
avoidant children appear to have little need for the attachment figure and show little
overt distress, although they are angered and made anxious by rejection. Children of
inconsistently available caretakers develop a strategy of maximizing attachment
behaviors, because they are fearful of the caregiver s potential inaccessibility (Main,
1990).
In support of this view, insecure attachment has been suggested as a risk factor in the
development of childhood psychopathology (Lewis, Feiring, McGuffog, and Jaskin,
1984). The connection between avoidant attachment and antisocial or disruptive
behavior has most frequently been reported. In relation to Anthony Burgess s A
Clockwork Orange the main character and (reliable) narrator, Alex, is the leader in a
circle of massive violence and destruction and rape crimes. From the novel we can
summarize that Alex s parents were unreliable and inconsistent caregivers. Their lack
of influence and responsibility when Alex was young quite possibly created his
violence. Yet, these studies suggest that aggression could be innate. However, a
person born with violent tendencies who has a healthy, nurturing, and supportive
environment can grow up and benefit therefore
5. A Relationship Based On Paternalism And Condescension...
What was once a relationship based on paternalism and condescension between
Ashkenazi and Mizrahi Jews has gradually transformed into a more leveled
socioeconomic platform between the two ethnic groups. The Jews of Ashkenazi
descent, mainly from Eastern European countries and Britain, arrived in the decades
before the creation of the State of Israeland were able to rapidly create a new society.
Shortly after Israel s independence, massive waves of Jewish immigrants flooded the
country, of which a large part were Mizrahim Jewsfrom North Africa and the Middle
East fleeing discrimination in Arab lands. The dominant Ashkenazim viewed the
incoming Mizrahi Jews as backwards and burdensome to the newly founded country s
cultural and economic image and took measures to make them conform to their
customs. This process of conditioning ultimately led to a wide socioeconomic gap
between the two groups that prompted political clashes and riots. Recent trends and
changes in the country s political structure have narrowed the gap and point toward
equal opportunities between Mizrahi Jews and Ashkenazi Jews.
Originating in Europe, Zionism was embedded with Western leaning principles that
aimed at coalescing the Jews of the Diaspora into one unified and modernized Jewish
identity within Israel. When it was introduced to the old Yishuv, it reflected the
Ashkenazim political and cultural values, including liberal democracy and national
self determination and therefore assured their success
6. War And Peace Themes
When it comes to a novel that defines human struggles in the most realistic way
possible, which one comes to mind? For me, it would be War and Peace, by Leo
Tolstoy. This novel is set in an early 19th century Russia, highlighting the interactions
of several aristocratic Russian families against the backdrop of Napoleon Bonaparte
s invasion of Russia and the burning of Moscow. There are several themes
interwoven in the plot that speak to the dynamics of human life. The main themes of
War and Peaceare the irrational nature of human behaviour, family, and the search for
a purpose.
One of the main themes of War and Peace is the irrational nature of human
behaviour. A clear example of this is the scandalous affair between Natasha Rostov
and Anatole Kuragin. Natasha Rostov was happily engaged to Prince Andrey
Bolkonsky, but suddenly ended the engagement because she fell in love with
Anatole within a 3 day span and wished to elope and run away with him. Her
cousin Sonya, upon learning of the affair directly from Natasha, commented
Natasha, I can t believe you, you re joking. In three days to forget everything, and
like this... (659). To this, Natasha responds It seems to me as though I have loved
him for a hundred years... You can t understand that (659). This relates to how
irrational impulses are logical to an individual, but seldom to anyone else. To Natasha,
following her heart means finding happiness, but her desires also blind her from
reality and concrete truth.
7. San Diego City Analysis
As a person who has now lived in San Diego for over 22 years and a Latino, it is
impossible not to see the medley of direct influences of Hispanic culture in this
border town. Because Hispanic people heavily populate the city and it s proximity to
Mexico, representations of this thriving culture can be found in the city s art, food,
religion, architecture, economy, and politics. To get a better understanding of this, we
must start at the beginning.
Californio is a term used to identify a Spanish speaking, mostly Roman Catholic

Whaling in US compared to Japan
Did you know that in the last 50 years over two million whales have been killed?
The United States views whaling very differently than Japan does. It is a complicated
and controversial topic. Many people have opinions about whale hunting. However,
everyone should know both sides of the whale hunting issues before they act on the
issue. To start out I am going to tell you a little about whaling. The first whale hunters
were in the prehistoric times. At first they would just kill and eat beached whales.
That became such a habit that they started hunting them. Most whale hunters use
harpoons, guns, lances, or bombs that blow up inside the whale. They use catcher
boats, or kayaks. In 1925, whalers developed ... Show more content on

code on whale hunting. The United States never depended on whale meat like
Japan. They mostly whale hunted for a hobby. The Congress feels that whales are
a unique resource of great scientific interest to mankind and are a vital part of the
marine ecosystem. Man has overexploited whales for many years, highly reducing
species and endangering others. The United States has extended its responsibilities
to protect all marine animals. They think that whales are a particular interest to
citizens of the United States. Japan started whaling way back in the 2nd Century
BC. They whale because they have whale meat as part of their diet. In 1946, whale
meat was not considered special food anymore but was necessary to keep the
Japanese healthy and alive because they depended on it for so long. People ate whale
meat as a source of protein whether they liked it or not. In 1947, about 47% of the
total animal protein was whale meat. Until the 1960 s, whale meat continued to be
their main source of protein. In 1962, the whaling industry recorded 226,000 tons of
whale meat; this was the highest amount throughout the history of the Japanese
whaling. The percentage of whale meat consumption compared to the total animal
meat consumption was 23% in 1964. (whalenet 1) Whale meat was the only meat
served in school lunches, which began in 1947 and continued until the

Afros were first worn by Circassian beauties also known as Moss haired girls , a
group of women in sideshow attractions in the United States by P. T. Barnum. These
women were claimed to be from the Circassian people in the Northern Caucasus
region, and were marketed to White audiences by the exotic East as pure examples of
the Caucasian race. Afros became popular in the 1960s in the african american
community when the Black panthers brought it out .The reason I choose the art

10. The Importance Of Self Abuse Essay
Some use makeup to feel glamorous and others use make up as a way to take time
for themselves. However, should children be introduced to the world of makeup?
At what age is it appropriate to use makeup? It is important for children to build a
solid sense of self before introduction to make up. There are many negative factors
that can develop in a child s mind by introducing them to makeup at a young age,
such as self esteem issues, and blurring what children know as appearance and
reality. Many believe that makeup can be a way to express our identity, but I
believe makeup can be destructive to the development of children and their
identities. When children are young, their self esteem is relatively high because
we as humans are not born with insecurities. As children, we all, typically, had a
very innocent and positive way of seeing ourselves and the world. Many may still
wonder, what is the big deal with letting children play with childhood makeup sets?
For one, if a child is growing up to be comfortable in their body makeup can create
many insecurities that can damage their self image and self worth, but obviously,
these are not the initial reactions that a child may have when they receive their first
makeup kit. Initially, they will be excited with the idea of being able to wear
something that adults wear, but after exploring with makeup over time a child may
think they need make up to look attractive and that their natural beauty is not good
enough. For example,

You step into the elevator, one thats about to take you 2,000 feet below the surface of

most notably it s very harsh effects on the carboncycle and environment. Mining
itself is one of the oldest professions in history. Since the dawn of time man has
found value in rocks hidden by the Earth. Danger and death are present at every
waking moment in these caves. One only needs to look back to April of 2013, where
Utah s famous copper mine Bingham Canyon where two avalanches poured down
unto the mines. As the mine was decommissioned in 1966, no one was hurt. This,
unfortunately is rarely the case.
However collapses or explosions may not kill a miner. rather something smaller way

13. Planning Policies On Social Life
Planning policies on Social Life in Cities
For year s urban policy and strategy has been dominated by thinking about the
physical city: landmark architecture, transport, housing, urban development, and
increasingly the technological infrastructure to create smarter, more productive, and
greener cities. Clearly social issues like health, education, employment and public
safety matter to city leaders but policy and public services deal with people in the
abstract rather than the particular, which is why so often, plans diverge from reality
in unpredictable and unintended ways. The social life of cities, in particular the
ordinary, the small scale and mundane aspects of urban life, are commonly
overlooked as a source of insight and inspiration for city planners and decision
makers.
Looking at the everyday life of city streets and neighborhoods provides a perspective
on cities, social change and the radical variety of urban life, that is dramatically
different to thinking about the city as an intelligent network or transport system with
predefined ideas about how people will behave that is more of how the social
planning do. Social planning is the process by which policymakers legislators,
government agencies, planners, and, often, funders try to solve community problems
or improve conditions in the community by devising and implementing policies
intended to have certain results. These policies may take the form of laws,
regulations, incentives, media campaigns,

should be applicable across both private and public organisations and must be in
context. He states that the six secrets are not intended to be

Riba (Interest) as a cause of Imbalance Society and its Islamic Perspective
Dr. Irfan Khalid

Islamabad, Pakistan irfan.khalid33@yahoo.com Abstract:
The prosperity and peace of a society much or less depends on its economy. While
for the smooth running of both, there are several instructions in Islamic Shariah and
allows what is right and forbids what is wrong. When we talk about financial issues,
Islamic Shariah strictly condemns Riba. The question may arise why Islam prohibits
Riba? While it was already in practice before the advent of Islam and still it is a part
of different economic systems throughout the world. It is simply because Islam gives
respect to human beings and condemns all the attempts that are harmful and
disgraceful for humanity. Therefore, Riba is not only forbidden in Islam but
economic experts are also in search of its substitute. Since borrowing on interest rate
creates several issues including: less efficient allocation of resources, indebtedness,
unemployment and economic instability. While in society it causes injustices,
inequity, poverty and imbalance etc. In this paper we are discussing how Riba
causes imbalance in the society and instead Riba what Islam demands from its
followers.

Most reported cases are in Arab countries (KSA, Jordan, Iraq) (15 cases) [2 6]. Iraq
is the highest of Arab countries (11 cases) [4]. The difficulty arises in management
as cases are unique to each exposure in terms of dose injected, site of intended
versus actual injection and quantification of the exact dose of exposure. The lethal
dose of kerosene for 70 kg adult is 100 ml [7]. Only 12.9% (4 cases) had reported the
exact dose of kerosene that was used. Routes of kerosene exposure included:
intradermal, subcutaneous and intravenous. Superficial skin contact with kerosene
may cause dryness scaling and dermatitis [8]. Injection of kerosene presents with a
more severe clinical presentation in the form of local unspecified inflammation,
aggregation of neutrophils and soft tissue necrosis. This was demonstrated in two
histopathology specimens of debrided necrotic tissue in two reported cases [2,3].
Intradermal injection has been reported in 32% of cases (10 cases) [4]. All treated
medically as a case of panniculitis and skin ulceration. Patients recovered without
complications except one who has developed injection site fibrosis and contracture in
the wrist and

Different news outlets, social media accounts, and TV stations are constantly filling
our minds with information every day. Whether we are aware of it, or not, every
media source will use multiple persuading elements to create different emotions or
attitudes towards the information being presented. Three documentaries are guilty of
using persuasive techniques similar to various media outlets. The Dropbox, a
documentary directed by Brian Ivie, explains how a controversial invention, which
allows mother to anonymously drop off their unwanted babies, is impacting a small
community in South Korea. Blackfish is produced by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and
it shows the harsh treatment of Orcas who live in captivity and perform shows for
entertainment. Finally, in Race to Nowhere, Vicki Abeles displays how children are
becoming overworked and overscheduled by their schools. Each one of these
documentaries use the rhetorical tool of pathos in order to make the audience feel a
sense of displeasure towards those in authority.

compel the audience to be frustrated with the educational system. Every director
produced a feeling of displeasure by their choices of media. The selected testimonies
and visuals generated an emotional tie between the audience and the documentary,
which produced these feelings of discontent. Whether it is media outlets, social media

18. Abraham Lincoln s Inaugural Address Analysis
Abraham Lincoln s inaugural addresses as president of the United States in 1861 and
1865 come in the time of a nation that had seen sectionalist thoughts divide the people
from the region over the issue of slavery. Abraham Lincoln stated thoughts that
remained constant between his two addresses to the nation and a few inconsistent
points on the national identity of the United States, the issue of slavery, and the future
of a reunified Union. Abraham Lincolnstated multiple time throughout both speeches
that the people must continue to preserve the Union and that they must not be
enemies, but friends. Lincoln did not just repeat the same speech twice as he has to

He viewed slavery as immoral and an institution that God must have wanted to be
removed in his second inaugural address. Even as the war was ending, the nation
was divided on the issue of slavery and there were protests and an entire war going
on with one side for and one side against slavery. This can be related to the latest
presidential election in 2016 in which Donald Trump was voted president of the
United States over his opposition, Hillary Clinton. Although the violence was
significantly less and nowhere near that of a full scale war, at Donald Trump
rallies and at other times supporters of Donald Trump instigated fights with Latinos
telling them to go on the other side of the wall [which Trump plans to build
between the U.S. and Mexico] . At other times, brawls broke out between Trump
and Hillary supporters, and they were again started by the Trump supporters. The
two candidates for president had vastly different views for where to take America, as
did the Union and the Confederacy which were fighting over slavery during Lincoln
s second address. In addition, both the election and the war to end slavery are similar
in the fact that there was a controversial issue that would affect the demographics of
the citizens of America. In the election that was preventing immigration to the U.S.

19. The Theories Of New Criticism
During the early part of the 20th century, the formalist theories of New Criticism
arose as the preeminent approach to teaching literature in college and high school
curricula. Centered on the idea that there is a single, fixed meaning inherent in a
literary work, New Criticism is text centered with no consideration given to the author
or the reader. The text exists in and of itself, and New Critics advocate methodical and
systematic reading, focusing on the structure of the text to define its meaning
(Definition, n.d.). Louise Rosenblatt s groundbreaking work in Literature as
Exploration (1938/1995) and later refinement of her original thesis in The Reader, the
Text, the Poem (1978), rejects the idea of this single, fixed meaning inherent in the
text. It is her theory that the individual creates meaning through a transaction with the
text based on personal associations, thus lifting the reader to a prominent, essential
position along with the author and the text (Mora Welch, 2014). Known as
transactional or reader response theory, Rosenblatt viewed the reader as transacting
with a text to create what she called the poem; the meaning that emerges from the
transaction at a given time. In Literature as Exploration (1938/1995), she argues that
the same personal, social, and cultural factors that affect how a person perceived the
world will inevitably affect the equation represented by book plus reader (p. 79). The
text, however, is simply a: stimulus activating
20. Society’s Effect in Peter Shaffer’s Equus and...
Peter Shaffer and Franz Kafka, the authors of Equus and Metamorphosis, reveal
through their main characters struggles how society s oppression causes a loss of
identity. This oppression is caused by society s obsession with what it believes to be
normal and how society s beliefs drive it to conform those who don t fit its normal
image. The two authors use their characters to symbolize the different views and
judgments of society. And based on these judgments, the authors use two different
types of oppression that cause different outcomes. Finally, this essay will reveal how
the two authors use their characters to drain the protagonists identity to show society
s desire to conform.

Whenever Gregor leaves his room he causes an uproar which usually ends with
him being physically punished and forced back into his room by his father. This
can be seen in the first chapter when Gregor reveals himself to his parents and boss,
and becomes injured when his father forces him back into the room. In addition in
the second chapter Gregor sustains mortal injuries for following his sister Grete into
the house to help his collapsed mother. In the end, with his injuries and seeing
himself as a nuisance and a monster like his family did, Gregor dies.
Both of the authors exploit their characters by using them to slowly leech the
identity of their protagonists which ends in the protagonists loss of identity. They
do this to show how society is always trying to conform others. In both books,
society tries to conform the characters into what they believe is best for them. This
can be seen in Equus when Dysart promises, It s all over now, Alan. It s all over
now. He ll [Equus] go away now... You are going to be well. I m going to make
you well, I promise you. (Shaffer 2 35). Shaffer uses his character Dysart to

creates another purpose for his character Dysart. Shaffer exploits Dysart to reveal
how society s cure for Alan is more destructive than it is helpful. Understanding what

Human rights are the most inalienable of rights, assured to all people by benefit of
birth in the effort that all people are able to live the most righteous lives.
Unfortunately, there are many places in the world where human rights are
systematically denied. One of these places is El Salvador, which is currently one of
twelve countries in the world that fosters a total ban on abortions. This legislation has
created a society that strips females of their ability to make choices regarding their
own body, causes them physical harm, and puts many women who do not abort into a
precarious economic situation. El Salvadorian women constantly face a multitude of
human rightsviolations despite the country s ratification of many human right s
documents, such as the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights and
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
In El Salvador, there is currently widespread support for the legalization of abortion
yet the government refuses to supply females with the basic human right to life. The
circumstances faced by females in El Salvador represent an encroachment on the
human rights to life, medical care and an adequate standard of living, which require
immediate remedy through legislative change.
El Salvador s legislative history becomes a key factor in understanding how the
country s abortion ban constitutes a human rights violation. The 1956 Penal Code of
El Salvador explicitly stated that abortion was
22. Dead Man Walking Persuasive Essay
Death is calling to him. The prisoner is anxiously waiting to be strapped to a table.
He wonders what could be on the other side of the living. Is it God waiting for his
soul to be judged? Or is it plain darkness? The guards finally escorted him to the
chamber where his fate lies within. A very fine needle is inserted deep into his vein
and what the vile tubes contain are sodium thiopental and pancuronium bromide.
Once injected, these chemicals will shut down the body completely. After a steady
rhythm of the heart monitor declined, there was a long flat beep sound. A doctor
examines the body and the prisoner is pronounced dead. The U.S currently have 2.3
million people locked up in a prison or jail (Mass Incarceration) . Majority of the
States have the death penalty for criminals with violent offences. However, There s a
lot of controversy surrounding capital punishment. Both sides of the argument are
consistently trying to persuade the population whether it s right or wrong. The
movie, Dead Man Walking, is based on a true story that centers around a death row
inmate Matthew Poncelet. Sister Helen, a nun, is called to help him for an appeal to
escape the death penalty. The film illustrates both factions of the argument by
demonstrating the usage of the persuasive techniques like pathos, ethos, and logos.
The appeal of pathos is heavily exhibited throughout the film. It was use to arouse a
strong emotion from the audience. A perfect example from the movie is the
23. Ronald Reagan s Iran Contra Scandal
The Iran Contra Scandal, an undisclosed arrangement of illegal trading, that took
place during the 1980 s , during Ronald Reagan s presidency, involving people from
the United States government, Ronald Reagan s administration , and the United
States military. The scandal was a covert action never authorized by the United States
Congress.
There were two countries involved with the United States in the scandal, Iran in the
Middle East and Nicaragua in Central America. Nicaragua is the sight of the Contras,
a group that was against the Nicaraguan government in the 80 s, and were often
looked at as human rights abusers. The Nicaraguan government was seen by
Americans as communists so in Regan s eyes the anti government Contras were anti

The biggest player was the President, the scandal exposed the abusiveness to his
power in office, and eventually hit the media exposing the President and his
counterparts involved. President Reagan said today that he had not been in full
control of his Administration s Iran policy, and the White House said that as a
consequence up to $30 million intended to pay for American arms had been secretly
diverted to rebel forces in Nicaragua (Weinraub 1). The actions that had taken place
in the scandal and trades went completely behind congress and much of the United
States government. Although the President may deny any involvement in the arms
deal and money trades, he was in on all of it. With the Administration already in
turmoil over the earlier disclosure of clandestine arms shipments to Iran, and with
speculation rampant about a major overhaul of the White House staff, the President
s statement seemed to deepen a sense of disarray. By all accounts, Mr. Reagan now
faces the most serious crisis in his six year Presidency (Weinraub

Abstract
This paper connects contact sports with degenerative brain diseases. It also shows
that CTE is not only connected to football because of the continuous tackling
inducing trauma to the brain, but also soccer where heading the ball can often cause
brain damage. This is supported by research of retired NFL football players and
soccer players whose brains showed evidence of CTE. Also when the Mayo Clinic
studying the brains of those who did not participate in contact sports showing no
evidence of CTE. Based on scientific evidence degenerative brain diseases such as
CTE are caused by successive concussions. Since concussions are one of the most
common brain injuries seen in contact sports today there is a definite association
between contact sports and degenerative brain diseases.
Contact Sports and Degenerative Brain Disease
Contact sports such as soccer, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, and football have become
popular activities for children to have fun and relieve stress they often face from
school. The participation of sports has been closely related with improved physical,
social, and mental health. Examples may include enhanced self esteem, lower
probability of teen suicide, higher rates of high school graduation, and reduced use of
drugs and tobacco. Although the participation in sports may lead to future health
25. Differences Between Catcher In The Rye And Holden
The Catcher in the Rye, which is written by Jerome David Salinger and the novel
What We All Long For, written by Dionne Brand, both depict the inner thought and
the growth of a young rebellious character. Holden Caulfield, the sixteen year old
protagonist in The Catcher in the RyeпјЊis in the dilemma between childhood and
adulthood. He is caught between the mourning of childhood s disappearing and the
fear of adulthood s coming. On the other hand, the novel What We All Long For
represents a generational shift in the politics of being in Canadian space. Tuyen, the
protagonist in the novel is a creative artist who has fled from the pained nostalgia of
her parents, Cam and Tuan s, and she lives downtown on College Street in Toronto,

the old tradition has been broken, yet no new standard has been established. The
society is changing and the culture is becoming free and phony. The lives of many
Americans are increasingly characterized by a sense of alienation and loss of

identity and self identity. The social imbalance and ambiguity make it more difficult
for adolescents to grow up. The young confront with the social problems brought by

spokesman for children, the weak and vulnerable group in the materialistic world.

Neepawa is a small Manitoban town of nearly 4000 people, which, despite its size,
concocts beautiful landscapes as well as successful individuals. One of these

Neepawa in 1904. At the age of 10, him and his family moved to Winnipeg where

Charles Goodeve s electrochemical achievements during the war were not the only
successes he had in the scientific field. Specifically, he made significant observations
regarding the absorption spectra. He established the band spectra for unstable
molecules and the beginning point of diffuse or continuous absorption (which led to
dissociation). Though the work was difficult to accurately complete during the time
period, his measurements are still accepted today. Goodeve, captivated by the
volatility of unstable molecules and compounds, went on to research the severely
understudied oxides of chlorine, and later, the oxides of sulfur. His studies included
determining the heats of dissociation of Cl2O and ClO2 in a calorimeter and
measuring vapour pressure. His research on oxides of sulfur focused on the
oxidation of sulphurous acid solutions, and on the formation of sulphuric acid mists
from water vapour and sulphur trioxide. Though a mechanism for removal of this
mist was devised in the lab, it was not realistically applicable to

Willie McGee was a married African American man from Laurel, Mississippi who
was accused of raping a white woman in 1945. His trial, which ended in a
sentencing of the death penalty, was the inspiration for Harper Lee s famous novel
To Kill a Mockingbird. Willie McGee was born in Laurel, Mississippi in the midst of
Jim Crow segregation. He grew up attending all black local schools. Willie began
work while still a young man and obtained a job as a local grocery delivery man in
his 30 s. He was married on April 15, 1935 and had four children with his life.
McGee was arrested for the alleged rape of Willette Hawkins, a 32 year old white
housewife in town. He was tried within a month in front of an all white jury. It took

Barings Bank and Nick Leeson
Introduction I would like to present the case of Barings Bank, one of the most
famous histories in the world when one man led to the bankruptcy the oldest
British bank. Barings collapsed on February 26, 1995, due to the activities of one
trader, Nick Leeson, who lost almost $1.4 billion. The loss was caused by a large
exposure to the Japanese stock market, which was achieved through the futures
market. Leeson, the chief trader for Barings Futures in Singapore, had been
accumulating positions in stock index futures on the Nikkei 225, a portfolio of
Japanese stocks. As the market fell more than 15 percent in the first two months of
1995, Barings Futures suffered huge losses, which were made even higher due to ...

Hong Kong and Tokyo. Baring Brother and Company (BB and Co) then

would be active. The basketball courts in Duke Center should be renovated for good
purposes.
First of all, new basketball courts would be awesome because people would play

Most importantly, the community would come together, and kids would be more

they might not have a good family. Finally, they could have tournaments for money

31. Nazi Propaganda And The Holocaust
Nazi Propaganda The use of propaganda that the Nazis made to go against the Jews
negatively affected them because most bystanders believed in the propaganda
which made the Jews seem not human to other people. This further allowed the
Nazis to dehumanize the Jews in a way where the Jews had absolutely no freedom.
It was very important for the Nazis to make sure that everyone was noticing the
propaganda. In order to accomplish that goal, they focused on starting at an early
age by placing it in children s books, Inside the book, the comparison to the
mushroom is explained when a mother tells her child, Just as it is difficult to
distinguish between a poisonous mushroom, it is difficult to distinguish between a

The movie Murderball, is a documentary about the crazy sport called quad rugby .
This sport can be very dangerous to most of the players since they are Quadriplegia
which means most of the players are wheel chair bounded and have partial or total
loss of use of all their limbs and torso. That doesn t stop the players who strive for
the intensity, and thrill of the game of rugby. The movie goes into detail about how
the main characters became quadriplegic, some were born with an illness, other
became quadriplegic from horrible accidents. However, their disabilitydoes not stop

to be eligible to play Wheelchair Rugby, individuals must have a disability which
affects the arms and legs. Most players have spinal cord injuries with full or partial
paralysis of the legs and partial paralysis of the arms. Other disability groups who
play include cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, amputations, polio, and other
neurological conditions. Men and women compete on the same teams and in the
same competitions. Players are assigned a sport classification based on their level of
disability; teams must field players with a mix of classification values, allowing
players with different functional abilities to compete together.
The sport is dangerous, but to this sports gives the athletes a purpose, a reason to
continue living and not being depressed. Being a part of the team gives them so
much more than just playing a sport. These athletes chose a different path than what
we normally see in individuals who become quadriplegic, they chose to continue
living and despite the sadness they found a new happiness They didn t think they
would feel again. I also feel that this sports has helped most of the athletes with their
emotional stability. It takes a great strength and endurance to compete the way these
athletes do. Being a part of the team has helped their daily life. These athletes have
become very independent; they drive themselves to practice they live on their own.
As a special educator, I value this movie for students with disabilities

James Arthur Baldwin was a prominent author in the 1900s. He did not let his
homosexuality or skin color put him down or get in the way of being himself.
Baldwin wrote essays, novels, plays, and poetry inspired from his environment and
relationships with other people. Although he was poor, it did not stop James Baldwin
from becoming a successful author that wrote about his experiences of being
homosexual and African American in a troubled society. In Baldwin s early life,
he had to work hard and support his family. Born on August 2, 1924 in Harlem,
New York, James Baldwin was born as the oldest child out of eight siblings ( About
the Author ). All of his siblings were step brothers and sisters (Tackach). Baldwin
helped raise his siblings for his mother, Emma Berdis Jones and his stepfather,
David Baldwin. James did not know his biological father because his mother
would not say anything related about his father. David Baldwin was a very harsh
and religious stepfather to James ( About the Author ). His stepfather would
verbally abuse him and call James an ugly child ( James Baldwin ). Even though
his home life was not so good, James had a good education and attended Frederick
Douglass Junior High School for the first two years of high school (Tackach). Then,
he attended DeWitt Clinton High School in Bronx, New York for the next two years
( James Baldwin ). During his years of high school, he became a preacher at church

34. Grendel Philosophies
Philosophies are the ideas formed in one s mind, often about the world and the
questions we have about it. As humans, we often pick one philosophy and stick with
it. How would a monster like the character Grendel in the novel by John Gardner
react to these philosophies? Throughout the novel, Grendel experiences and is
conflicted with many different philosophies. Influenced by characters such as the
Shaper, the Dragon, and the people of Hrothgar, Grendel experiences many
philosophies such as Nihilism, Solipsism, and Machiavellianism.
One of the major philosophies in the novel Grendel is Nihilism. Nihilism is the
rejection of moral and religious principles, and the belief that life is small and
meaningless. In the first few pages of the novel, John Gardner states that He cocks
his head like an elderly, slow witted king, considers his angles, decides to ignore
me. I stamp. I hammer the ground with my fists. I hurl a skull size stone at him.
He will not budge. (Gardner, 5). Here is a snippet of Grendel s hatred towards life
and even nature. Throughout the novel, Grendel proves to the reader that he doesn
t really care about anybody except for himself. In this quote, Grendel sees a ram
and tries to make it leave, only to fail. The ram just stays where it is and ignores
Grendel, even when Grendel yells and throws a large rock at it. As John Gardner
states, I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute
enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes

36. Example Of Sexual Assault Offenders
When conducting a study, it is impossible to collect data from the whole
population, therefore it is important to select a representative sample because
sampling makes it possible to select a representative for study and discover things
that apply to many more people who are not studies (Maxfield Babbie, 2012). The
purpose of sampling is to generate a set of individuals or other entitles that give us a
valid picture of all such individual or other entitles. It is important to generalise from
a sample to unobserved population the sample in intended to represent. Therefore,
when selecting a group of subjects for study, it is important to ensure that we
represent some larger population.

six month time period to allow for a detailed case study to take place.
The focus samples for this study will be adolescents who have been identified as
sexual offenders within the CJS. Simple random sampling method is ideal for this
study because in this method, every sample elements are selected only on the basic
of chance through a random process and removes bias from the selection procedure.
Therefore, it should result in representative samples (Bachman Schutt, 2017).
Although there are distinct advantages to using a simple random sample in study, it
is also important to keep in mind that there are some disadvantages as well.
Especially for large studies, it can be costly and time consuming. For example, the
time needed to gather the list of a specific population, the capital necessary to
retrieve and contact that list. However, for this study, it is hoped that the sample size
will be large enough to allow for some generalisation to be made about the population.
Data collection method
There are variety of methods of data collection in qualitative research, including

37. Classical And Romantic Eras Of Music
Fundamental changes in musical styles are often brought on by the changes in the
environment in which the music evolves from. Both the Classical and Romantic
eras of music offer influential aspects of music. In order for significant and
noticeable changes to occur in music, the society surrounding it must also change.
Significant social and political movements often bring on these stylistic changes in
music. These changes can range from the way personality is expressed in music to
the actual orchestration of the music. Without these changes though, culture would
not be what we know it as today. One of the leading social movements in the
Classical period was the Enlightenment. This period of time is also referred to the
Age of Reason. The Age of Reason was given this name because instead of
focusing on tradition, more emphasis was put on reason, ideas, and individualistic
endeavors. Knowledge was the most important factor in this era. Emotions were
becoming less prevalent in artistic expression, as well as the belief in the
supernatural. François Marie Arouet (Voltaire) and Denis Diderot were two of the
leading reformers and advocates of the Age of Reason. Their beliefs were grounded
by the idea that humanity should not rely on mystic beliefs and instead focus on
universal truths that would eventually improve society as a whole. Despite society
becoming more secular, religious sects such as the Quakers in both England and the
United States advocated for better treatment of

of the educational process. These meetings provide community members with
important information about upcoming events so that they are able to be well

their child attends. Along with being able to learn about what is taking place within
the school, it also allows parents and parent groups the opportunity to express their

Pogroms according to OED, is an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group.
Additionally, pogrom is a word Russian which basically means to wreak havoc, to

Pogroms how the Igbo people began to feel insecure and unsafe in Nigeria after the
counter coup and government sponsored pogroms. For instance, Achebe in his book,
There was a Country writes that the July 1966 counter coup and the pogroms against
the Igbo people, killed over thirty thousand civilian men, women and children were
slaughtered, hundreds of thousands were wounded, maimed and violates, their
homes and property looted and burned and no one asked any questions. [v]This
statement of Achebe clearly illustrates how because of the horrific counter coup and
the government implemented pogrom policy against the Igbo people have
generated doubts in Igbo people s mind on their stand whether one united and
peaceful Nigeria can actually exist or not. Also, this statement again emphasizes the
fact that how the mass violence and murders of Igbo people escalated the tensions
between the Igbos and other Nigerians groups and tribes, which eventually led to
emergence in the Biafra s liberation movement among the Igbo people. Moreover,
Achebe writes, ethnic riots happens everywhere in the world. But in this particular
case a detailed plan for mass killing was implemented by the government the army,
the police the very people who were there to protect life and property. [vi] This
statement of Achebe further indicates how when the Igbo people began to see that
their own government is planning on exterminate them, the anti Nigerian feelings
began to emerge in the Igbo people. It can be even said that at that point the Igbo

the white British males jobs and that Thatcher was made responsible for the high
unemployment rates. Meadows have successfully approached an often overlooked
moment in cultural history and have exposed it for what it really is. It is also clear
that not all men behave the same way that Meadows presents his characters on
screen. In today s world, the new man has been created, which no longer bides with
masculine characteristics, but instead coincides with feminine characteristics such as
sensibility, loving and caring, which we see in the character of Woody and it proves
that the representation of men have changed greatly over the years. In my opinion, I
believe that the use of grittiness is what makes This Is England so powerful and
effective in being very realistic towards themes such as nationalism, racism and pride.
It has given a huge impact on audiences as it helps educate them about England s
past, a moment in British history which has been over looked. It also shows how
far England has come as a country, as we can see during the opening title sequence
to the film where a selection of stock footage from the 1980s is being used to give
the audience a visual idea of when and where the film s story is set. Most
importantly, this film has shown how far men have come and changed for the better.

43. Differences Between The Help Book And Movie
The Help, Kathryn Stockett s novel and film discuss the story of African American
maids working in white Southern homes for the upper class white people during the
early 1960 s in Jackson, Mississippi. There are multiple dissimilarities between the
novel, The Help and the film, The Help . Even though the administrator managed to
keep the same storyline, there still are not as many similarities as differences in the
filmand novel. To begin with, the director had kept many of the characters
appearances and personalities the same in the film as in the novel. Some disparities
were that in the novel Skeeter is hefty and tall, but the movie has her lean and average
height. Hilly is portrayed in the book as an dark haired woman, whose weight
enlarged throughout the ending of book, but in the film, she is very thin and stays
that way throughout the whole film. Also in the film, Skeeter s maid Constantine, is
smaller than Skeeter although in the book it says that Constantine is the only person
who made Skeeter feel tiny and short. Lastly, Constantine s daughter in the movie
Rachel, is an African American, but in the novel, it says she may have a white
daughter or even no daughter. In the book, the Skeeter s family finds out
Constantine is dead when sending a personal check to her and her daughter sends it
back saying she has passed away. In the film, Skeeter s mother says that her brother
went to go bring Constantine back, but he finds out she has passed away. In the movie,
44. Jane Eyre Gender Essay
Charlotte BrontГ« s nineteenth century Victorian novel discusses the effects that
gender has on male and female paradigms. Rochester was married to Bertha
Mason, who is characterized as the madwoman in the attic. He locks his wife in the
attic because he cannot control her disability and marries Jane Eyre, a young
governess. Jane abandons Rochester at the altar because he lies about being
married. However, Jane later returns when Rochester becomes disabled. Rochester
views disability as something that can be designated to a location; unlike Jane, who
views her disabled husband as someone to be pitied and pacified. BrontГ« s novel
reflects how a womanwith an impairment is ignored and automatically labeled, such
as Bertha Mason. However, a male... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The way a female reads a male who is disabled is with sadness. She pities him and
becomes subservient to him. However, when a male is confronted with a disabled
female, he shuns her away, dismisses not only her needs, but her as a human
entirely. As Bertha s disability presents itself to be too much for the male body to
handle, the only way Rochester can exert his power is by controlling the physical
body of the female. Thus, controlling Bertha equates to controlling the disability
inself. To better understand such ideas, I will examine the scene where Rochester
admits to being married to Bertha. He takes Jane to the attic to show her who
exactly his wife is to display her madness. I aim to analyze the words he chooses to
represent his disabled wife, in comparison to words used to represent Jane. Words
such as demon , fearful hag , ghastly , and mask , in relation to grave , quiet , and
beautiful . To demonstrate how a female views the disabled male body, I will
explore the part of the novel where Jane discovers Rochester as a blind man.
Rochester asks Jane if she can stay with him, and immediately she agrees. Jane who
once rebellious, now becomes submissive. She demonstrates her dedication to
helping Rochester as she begins to feel sorry for a man who can no longer see his

In our school system we are forced to learn history such as the Civil Rights
Movement. We are taught that racism is no longer alive with in our society. This
discrimination is evident with in our community which has started some movements
to battle the issue of racism and the discrimination. Some movements are Black Lives
Matter and the kneeling during the singing of the national anthem which was started
by Colin Kaepernick back in 2016. The Black Lives Matter movement was started
because of all the police brutality that we have seen in the media. The kneeling in the
national anthem started with Kaepernick because he felt that he had to protest what
he deems as wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United
States. During interviews he says, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a
flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color, Kaepernick told
NFL Media. It is easy to say that we are all equal and that our system sees no color.
We can easily see that the rights of racial minorities are under attack in vital areas
such as immigration, affordable healthcare and housing.
A lot has happened from during the time of 1900 to 1964, California grew rapidly
and soon became an agricultural and industrial power. Within the 1900 to 1939 the
Segregation Era happened, racial oppression escalated across the United Sates. This
Created a lot of problems along the way. From 1900
46. Essay on Rites of Passage
Rites of Passage
Although there are many different types of rites of passage they differ in many
ways, some much more extreme than the others. There are so many different
cultures that have a ton of different ways of expressing rites of passage. The three
different cultures that will be discussed are the United States of America, Malaysian,
and Balinese adolescents. Some of the things that will be discussed are the different
forms of rites of passage, the different ages that they take place at, and how they
affect all the different societies.
The best definition of a rite of passage is a ritual event that marks a person s
transition from one status to another. This can be in many different forms, some

Although it is all meant to be fun and games sometimes they are taken too far and
really need to be thought out better so that crazy things like that do not happen any
longer. (Chicago tribune) The more normal rites of passage that occur in the United
States are much less extreme such as Sweet Sixteen parties, marriages, and funerals.
They all have a very different meaning at each point in someone s life. Sweet
Sixteen parties usually symbolize somebody becoming an adult although most of the
time nowadays people really aren t considered an adult until they re at least 18 and in
most cases even older than that. Marriage is sort of your next stage in life when you
and another person join together and start a family and hopefully have great lives
together. Then there is a funeral which is a much less enjoyed time in everyone s
lives when you put a loved one to rest. For a lot of people their loved ones will go to
Heaven but that changes with every individual on what they believe in if they even
believe in an afterlife at all.
There are quite a few important rites of passage in the Malay society starting with
the birth of the baby. After the birth the baby and the mother are put in a confinement
period of forty four days in their homes. There are also two other common
ceremonies that they practice during the infant years niak buaian, which is a
ceremony to introduce the baby to their cradle and potong jambul which is an event
when the child s
47. Key Elements Of Cosmopolitanism
The author argues that the idea of cosmopolitanism is very deeply rooted in Western
philosophy and thought. Starting from the antics, it survived the passive medieval
times and reappeared in the modern era with improved strength. Although
cosmopolitanism represents constantly present answer to important social questions
posed in different times, its presence and eminence changed due to and in relation to
the character of certain historical period. Cosmopolitan idea was introduced to
philosophyby Stoics, in whose writtings very sophisticated accounts of the idea can
be found. In ancient Greece s Stoics (Zeno of Citium, Hierocles) one can find the call
for the creation of one same political community (polis) in which all men should live.
In Roman Stoicism, the same rational nature of human beings becomes the necessary
condition for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For reasons of clarity and coherence, a differentiation between cosmopolitanism as an
idea, practice, and an attitude is proposed, while the term itself may have empirical,
normative and practical meaning. The paper is continued with explaining key
elements of thought of contemporary cosmopolitan authors, namely, David Held,
Kwame Appiah, Martha Nussbaum, Thomas Pogge and Ulrich Beck. Held s
cosmopolitanism is based on the premise that national state can not remain the sole
dominant level of governance in the globalized, interconnected world. That is why his
works concentrate on global governance principles and general recommendations of
reform of the most important international bodies (primarily UN). Kwame Appiah
tries to approach the issue from another perspective and, by advancing „rooted
cosmopolitanism , to reconcile healthy patriotic impulse with the practical necessity
and moral preponderance of cosmopolitan
48. Third Noble Truth In Hinduism
The Third Noble Truth is explains that a Hindu believer does not have to stay in that
unsatisfactory state that there were in during the third truth. The path of liberation is
one stage that the believer has to admit that life is awful and life has desire. The
goal of this stage is let go of the desires that was being held on to during the tanha
stage and realizing that there is so much more to gain in the Hinduism faith, such as
seeing Buddha face again in Heaven where he now resides. Working hard during the
liberation stage and not giving up leads to the renunciation stage. Renunciation occurs
when pressure of life begins to turn for the worst and the thought of giving happens.
The believer should contemplate, investigate, and determine how
