5. Pregrooming and general care
• Before grooming a pet assessing its health status is crucial to avaid disscomfert to the
animal.
1.EYE
The eyes should be bright and free of any discharge.
Clean away any debris or dried tears
Gently wipe out the eye discharge with moistened cotton

• The ears should be free of wax and hair
• Examing thr ear plucking hair from the ear canal and outer ear

The feet should be clean around the nail bed
Any excess hair should be cut short between the pads and nails to prevent mat
and inflammation
Locate the quick [nerve and blood supply]
Cut below the quick removing only the poited tip of the nail or claw

• Start at the foot of the rear legs of the dog, lift the coat up and brush from the bottom of
the coat outwards and continue along the side of the body and into the shoulder
10. • Move on to the foot of the front leg and meet up with the shoulder
• brush out the chest and throat and then around the neck
• Repeat the whole process on the other side of the dog and then finish by
brushing tail

• For matted coats demating tools has to be used in conjuction with a brush to break open
the coat
• Do not pull the mat out with the demater as this will be most uncomfortable for the dog
and keep the skin tight during this procedure

• When trimming you shoud bear in mind that all dogs are different –even those of same
breed,and hence you should consider the shape of the dog and achieve best possible
look
• Trimming around the head is difficult and safety of dog is paramount ,control the head by
holding the beard or muzzle firmly
• Never point the scissors towards the eyes but always across the eye
• Trimming around the ear always trim from the base towards the tip to ensure the ear is
not cut with the scissor

Never clip over the opening of the vulva or penis or directly over the anus

17. Layering the coat:
• A coat is layered when you are trimming a long coat to shorter length
• To achive the desired look lift the coat with a comb and catch the hair between
the fingers and working in the direction of the coat growth
• Use thinning scissors to trim the hair off-shorter towards the spine and longer
towards the belly
