Introducing Office Web Apps as a Tool for Developing Content Rich Applications
Office Web Apps was introduced with SharePoint 2010 as a service used to provide browser-based access to Office documents. Office Web Apps (OWA) 2013 modifies the service architecture significantly, enabling the exposure of document interactions through a browser to be customized and expanded within SharePoint as well as outside of SharePoint.
With this architecture change, we need to review the capabilities from a new perspective and question how we can best leverage this service. To start, we need to understand the new architecture changes. From there, how do we manage the health of OWA and apply updates? How do we leverage OWA to build additional capabilities into our applications? How do we expand OWA capabilities? What are the differences in OWA on-prem and OWA Office 365?

Scalable and Reliable Logging at Pinterest
Pinterest uses Kafka as the central logging system to collect over 120 billion messages per day from thousands of hosts. They developed Singer, a lightweight logging agent, to reliably upload application logs to Kafka with low latency. Data is then moved from Kafka to cloud storage using systems like Secor and Merced that ensure exactly-once processing. Maintaining high log quality requires monitoring for anomalies, auditing new features, and catching issues both before and after releases through automated tooling.

In November 2012 the Liquor Control Board was given the historic task of implementing a system to license and manage recreational marijuana production and sales across the state. LCB and their vendor, cloudPWR, used a mash up of cloud based applications, legacy systems, and LEAN thinking to deliver a complex system in just over a year. The Recreational Marijuana Licensing System was rated as the top priority project for 2014 by the Office of the CIO. The new system provides significant improvements in management information and automation over the current system, and is much easier for the LCB IT team to manage. It leverages the existing Oracle and Kofax system in use by the LCB licensing team and added automated web based data capture to allow applicants to submit information electronically. AIRLIFT, a custom web application, provided key integrations between the systems. Learn how this highly visible project was delivered on a tight budget and provides a great return for the Liquor Control Board and the citizens of the Evergreen State.

Custom Tile Generation in PCF
Cloud Foundry is a highly-available Platform-as-a-Service that provides organizations a stable environment to host their applications. Pivotal Cloud Foundry also includes the concept of tiles, which provide functionality for other services. When installed, tiles gain the benefits of being managed by the PaaS such as reliability and high availability. Examples of these tiles include MySQL, RabbitMQ, and Spring Cloud Services. Administrators can generate brokered instances of these services which are then available to any application running in the PaaS.
Organizations often find themselves in the position of owning custom functionality (e.g. a payment processing service) that would best be implemented as a tile in the PCF installation. Pivotal has recently introduced a new tile generation utility, which makes the generation of custom tiles a practical endeavor. In this session, attendees will learn: the benefits of generating a tile, some of the criteria used to decide whether a tile or some other mechanism is best for your organization, a short demonstration of a tile generation utility provided by Pivotal, and how to operationalize the maintenance of a tile.
