JIRA is now a mission critical application for Arizona State University. In our quest to become the premiere "Connected University", I will demonstrate several different business use cases utilizing JIRA and its technical capabilities. We use it to receive an email, create an issue, initiate an Enterprise Service Bus flow, and then record the outcome of the transaction and, if the outcome is negative, notify an appropriate resource.
You'll learn that JIRA is not necessarily a stand-alone system but can be fully integrated into the menu of enterprise applications and utilized to both receive and invoke business events. This presentation covers the use of Webhooks, JIRA API, and email-to-issue creation.

In 2011 we delivered 2 major releases of our on premise enterprise software. Market, technology and customer requirements forced us to change that in order to remain competitive.
Now – in 2017 - we are deploying and providing feature releases every 2 weeks for both our on premise and SaaS-based offering. We deploy 170 SaaS production changes per day and have a DevOps pipeline that allows us to deploy a code change within 1h if necessary.
To increase quality, we built and provide a DevOps pipeline that currently executes 31000 Unit & Integration Tests per Hour as well as 60h UI Tests per Build. Our application teams are responsible end-to-end for their features and use production monitoring to validate their deployments which allows them to find 93% of bugs in production before it impacts our end users.
In this session I explain how this transformation worked from both “Top Down” as well as “Bottom Up” in our organization. A key component was the 4 people strong DevOps Team who developed and “sell” their DevOps Pipeline to the globally distributed application teams. I will give insights into how our pipeline enables application teams to design, code, test and run a new feature for our user base.
I will also talk about the “dark moments” as change is never without friction. Both internally as well as with our customers who also had to get used to more rapid changes.

DON'T PANIC: GETTING YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE DRIFT UNDER CONTROL, ERAN BIBI, Firefly
In your ever-changing Infrastructure, some changes are intentional while others are not.
Drift is what happens whenever the real-world state of your infrastructure differs from the state defined in your configuration. This can happen for many reasons, sometimes it happens when adding or removing resources, other times when changing resource definitions upon resource termination or failure, and even when changes have been made manually or via other automation tools.
While Terraform itself can detect drifts, in most cases, you will be informed about it too late: just before you are about to deploy new changes to your infrastructure. What’s interesting about Terraform though, is that you can apply changes in two separate and distinct steps of “Planning” and “Applying”. This means that you have full visibility of what Terraform is planning on doing beforehand, and if you are satisfied with the changes, you can choose to apply them.
So how does this work? When something is changed intentionally, it will appear in the source code, and the Terraform plan will not do anything. However, if any part of the infrastructure has been changed manually, Terraform’s plan will identify this, and alert you to the change. In other words, if your IaC drifted from its expected state, then Terraform’s plan will, in fact, detect it.
Applying this simple solution can empower DevOps and developer velocity, with the reassurance and context for unexpected changes in your IaC, in near real-time. This talk will showcase real-world examples, and practical ways to apply this in your production environments while doing so safely and at the pace of your engineering cycles.
Verifying Microservice Integrations with Contract Testing
As you migrate your applications toward microservice architectures, new pains start to appear – like testing, for example. How on Earth do you verify all these separate moving parts work together before releasing? How can you be sure that your code is compatible with services that can't easily be spun up anymore? They are all written in different languages, operated by separate teams and deploy every day!
Do you find yourself lying awake at night missing monolithic applications where integrations were easier to test? In this talk we'll reveal how Atlassian is adopting a new strategy called "contract testing", using the Pact open source library to test our microservices. We’ll introduce the concept of contract testing, talk about why we love this approach, and go through some examples and patterns that will help you get started.
Scaling Your First 1000 Containers with Docker
Deploying large numbers of containers to production can be a difficult proposition if you don’t approach the problem with the right strategy – one that's appropriate for both your developers and the size of your operations team. Choosing a strategy lets you codify your deployment patterns in a repeatable manner and reuse them over hundreds of deployments without incurring unnecessary cost and complexity.

DON'T PANIC: GETTING YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE DRIFT UNDER CONTROL, ERAN BIBI, Firefly
In your ever-changing Infrastructure, some changes are intentional while others are not.
Drift is what happens whenever the real-world state of your infrastructure differs from the state defined in your configuration. This can happen for many reasons, sometimes it happens when adding or removing resources, other times when changing resource definitions upon resource termination or failure, and even when changes have been made manually or via other automation tools.
While Terraform itself can detect drifts, in most cases, you will be informed about it too late: just before you are about to deploy new changes to your infrastructure. What’s interesting about Terraform though, is that you can apply changes in two separate and distinct steps of “Planning” and “Applying”. This means that you have full visibility of what Terraform is planning on doing beforehand, and if you are satisfied with the changes, you can choose to apply them.
So how does this work? When something is changed intentionally, it will appear in the source code, and the Terraform plan will not do anything. However, if any part of the infrastructure has been changed manually, Terraform’s plan will identify this, and alert you to the change. In other words, if your IaC drifted from its expected state, then Terraform’s plan will, in fact, detect it.
Applying this simple solution can empower DevOps and developer velocity, with the reassurance and context for unexpected changes in your IaC, in near real-time. This talk will showcase real-world examples, and practical ways to apply this in your production environments while doing so safely and at the pace of your engineering cycles.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
