2. Martin was the son of a Spaniard from the Order of Alcántara,
Don Juan de Porres (according to some documents, the original
surname was Porras) born in the city of Burgos, and of a free black
woman, Ana Velázquez, a native of Panama who lived in Lima
3. Martín de Porres was baptized on December 9,
1579 in the Church of San Sebastián in Lima
4. Ana Velázquez gave her two children, Martin and Joana
a Christian education. Juan de Porres was stationed in
Guayaquil, and from there he provided them with sustenance
5. Martín de Porres
in Lima, was
placed under the
care of Doña
Isabel García
Michel in the
suburb of
Malambo, in
the lower part of
the San Lázaro
neighborhood,
inhabited by
blacks and other
racial groups.
7. In 1591 he received the sacrament of Confirmation
from Archbishop Saint Toribio of Mogrovejo.
8. Martín began his apprenticeship as an apothecary in the house of Mateo
Pastor. Apothecaries performed minor cures and administered remedies
for common cases. He was also an apprentice to the barber and surgeon
Marcelo de Ribera, a trade in which he acquired knowledge of minor surgery.
9. In Martín, the Spanish, Andean and African medicinal traditions
converged; he used to grow a variety of plants in a garden which
he later used to make remedies for the poor and sick. He
started his work as a nurse between 1604 and 1610
10. he took the pulse, palpated, bandaged, splinted,
pulled teeth, removed bandages, suctioned
bleeding wounds, and skillfully laid hands etc.
11. In 1594, at the age of fifteen, and at the invitation of Fray Juan de Lorenzana,
a famous Dominican, theologian and man of virtue, he entered the Order of
Santo Domingo de Guzmán under the category of "donated", that is, as
tertiary. Thus he lived 9 years, practicing the most humble trades
12. He was admitted as a brother of the order in 1603.
He persevered in his vocation despite the opposition
of his father, and in 1606 he became a friar professing
the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
14. The future saint was
frugal, abstinent
and vegetarian.
He slept only two or
three hours, mostly
in the afternoons.
He always wore
a simple white
cordellate habit with
a long black cape.
15. Martín was a
follower of the
saintly models
of Santo
Domingo de
Guzmán,
Saint Joseph,
Saint Catherine
of Siena and
Saint Vincent
Ferrer
20. he dedicated himself solely to practicing charity,
which he extended to all the ethnic groups.
His many difficulties did not take away his good humour
21. The invalides waited for him at the gate so that he could
cure them of their illnesses or give them food. Martin
tried not to show off and did this very discretely
22. He would even
bring the poor
and sick to his
own cell and,
when corrected
by one of the
conventuals
for reasons
of closure,
he claimed his
motives arose
from charity
24. He answered – “before charity, there is no precept,
not even obedience" because "charity always has
open doors, and the sick have no closure".
25. As his person and name commanded respect, he had to intervene in
the sanation of irregular marriages, settling disputes, ruling on
lawsuits and reconciling families. With very clear criteria he advised
at times the Viceroy and the archbishop in delicate matters
26. Despite having a well-stocked
cupboard in his cell with herbs,
bandages and his work
instruments, he only had
boards and a pallet as a bed.
27. On one occasion, the Convent had serious economic difficulties and
the Prior was forced to sell some valuable objects. In view of this,
Martín de Porres offered to be sold as a slave to remedy the crisis.
28. He taught
Christian doctrine
and faith of Jesus
Christ to the blacks
and Indians and
rural people who
attended to listen
to him in the
streets and on the
farms near the
properties of the
Order located in
Limatambo
29.
30. He founded the
Asylum and School
of Santa Cruz to
bring together all
the homeless,
orphans and
beggars and help
them get out of
their painful
situation
31. The money from
Don Mateo Pastor
and Francisca
Vélez was used to
open the Schools
for Orphans of
Santa Cruz,
where the children
received care and
were taught
about Christ
32. he took care of the animals, especially when
he saw them injured or lacking food
33. He was said to have control over nature,
plants germinated before their time and all
kinds of animals attended to his commands
34. Saint Martin de Porres and Saint Rosa de Lima,
also a Dominican tertiary, met each other a few times.
36. Martin's charismatic personality was sought after by people from
all walks of life and social strata. High dignitaries of the Church and the
Government, simple people, rich and poor, all found relief in Martin for
their spiritual, physical or material needs. His entire disposition and his
unconditional help to his neighbor caused him to be seen as a holy man
37. Martin always aspired to
carry out a missionary
vocation in distant
countries.
They often heard him talk
about the Philippines,
China and especially
Japan, a country that he
once claimed to know
38. He is credited with the gift of bilocation. Without leaving Lima,
he was seen in Mexico, Africa, China and Japan, encouraging
missionaries who were in difficulty or healing the sick.
39. While he remained locked in his cell,
they saw him arrive at the bedside
of certain dying people to comfort
or heal them. - Many saw him enter
and leave the premises with the
doors closed. Sometimes he would
leave the convent to attend to a
seriously ill person, and he would
later re-enter without having a key
to the door and without anyone
opening it.
40. "I heal you, God cures you" was the phrase he always used
to say to avoid displays of veneration for his person
41.
42. Many testimonies affirmed that when he prayed with great
devotion, he levitated and did not see or hear the people.
43. Occasionally he could be
seen in ecstasy, elevated
above the ground, during
his long nocturnal prayers
before the holy Cross,
ignoring the natural
need for sleep.
He was permanently
devoted to the Eucharist,
and was always present
at mass at dawn
44. clairvoyance
He used to appear
before the poor and
sick bringing them
certain foods,
medicines or objects
that they had not
requested, but were
secretly wanted or
needed by them.
45. Around 1619 he began to suffer from quartans, very high fevers
that occurred every four days; This disease worsened and lasted
the rest of his life, yet he continued to fulfill his obligations.
46. he was credited with
the ability to predict
life his own and that
of others, including
the time of death.
At the age of sixty,
Martin de Porres fell
ill and announced
that the time had
come to meet
the Lord
47. Currently his remains rest in the Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo
in Lima, (Peru) along with the remains of Santa Rosa de Lima and
San Juan Masías in the so-called "Altar of the Peruvian Saints".
48. In 1660,
the Archbishop of Lima,
Pedro de Villagómez,
began collecting
evidence of the
virtues and miracles
of Martín de Porres
to promote his
beatification.
His beatification process
lasted until 1837 when
he was beatified by Pope
Gregory XVI.
49. Pope John XXIII felt
a true devotion for
Martin de Porres.
On May 6, 1962,
before a crowd of forty
thousand people from
various parts of the
world, he canonized
him by naming him
"Patron Saint of
Social Justice".
50. Virgin Mary and Saint Martin de Porres, help me this day to be
more helpful to the people around me and thus grow in true holiness.
