Katharine Drexel was born in 1858 to a wealthy Catholic family in Philadelphia. After inheriting a large sum from her father, she devoted her life and fortune to founding schools and an order of sisters to educate African Americans and Native Americans. In 1891 she established the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament order. By the time of her death in 1955, her order had founded over 50 schools. She was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2000 for her life of service, generosity, and dedication to education.
