As the North Vietnamese forces approached, the U.S. initiated evacuations of American civilians and South Vietnamese refugees. On April 30th, 1975, South Vietnamese president Duong Van Minh announced the nation's surrender on radio. Later that day, a guerrilla raised the flag of the communist government over the presidential palace, marking the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War.
