How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within
your own cultural communities?
● You are preceived as weak or dramatic
● not talked about, ignored
● I grew up in an Irish American fanily where mentwl illness was
considered a moral failing
● Not talked about
● We don't need therapists, family suffices as treatment. Thinking
positive as all we need. (Filipino culture)

● Mental health is a silent killer because you deal with the pain with habits like overeating
and substance abuse
● "what could you be depressed about?" I had that mentality for a long time
● When I started college I felt the same.. My struggles weren't as bad as others, how could
I say I was depressed?
● everyone have their own struggles
● It looks like you died from High BP, obesity, cancer etc but its your bad feelings making
yiu abuse yourself
● Hopeful
● Even though it focused on the Black community, I felt a lot of similarities
● Like you mentioned Rebecca, the internalized stigma even impacts ourselves
● I liked that it called attention to the importance of destigmatization
● I think it's so wild(read:terrible) that skin color/cultural background convince people
their experiences and struggles are invalid or impossible
● I'm happy that Mental Health is the main conservation within the black communities
today.
● I'm also glad the men are being involved in the conversation, they deserve the support
too. Like one person mentioned in the film, its common to hear that talking about
mental health makes men "soft"
● I think its more about money, if you can buy good things you survive, if not, you have to
figure it out ...to survive and be the best you.
● Our society puts. More. value. On. people. With. money.

How can we support ourselves and others?

● Listening to others and offering advice from our experiences
● I am “out” with my autism because i think people need to see that
people on the spectrum are able to thrive
● Know your resources, reach out when needed, and check in on the
folks you care about.
● I believe holding space for an individual can make a difference.
● Being willing to have these conversations so people know you're
there for them
● Dont pretend you never have “problems” and that there is
something wrong with those that do
● be vulnerable with those around you.
● We have to listen to ourselves first before we can truly listen to
others.
● Holding space such as listening, giving sound advice, or maybe
just a hug or shoulder to cry on.
