Sacagawea was born to a Shoshoni tribe but was kidnapped at age 12 and sold into slavery. She was purchased by Toussaint Charbonneau and became his wife. Sacagawea proved invaluable to the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a translator and for her knowledge of the local lands, including warning them of a dangerous flood. While on the expedition, she gave birth to her son Jean-Baptiste. After completing the journey, Sacagawea returned home but her later life remains uncertain, with theories that she either died shortly after having a second child or left her husband to return to her original tribe.
