Unifying Frontend and Backend Development with Scala - ScalaCon 2021Taro L. Saito
Scala can be used for developing both frontend (Scala.js) and backend (Scala JVM) applications. A missing piece has been bridging these two worlds using Scala. We built Airframe RPC, a framework that uses Scala traits as a unified RPC interface between servers and clients. With Airframe RPC, you can build HTTP/1 (Finagle) and HTTP/2 (gRPC) services just by defining Scala traits and case classes. It simplifies web application design as you only need to care about Scala interfaces without using existing web standards like REST, ProtocolBuffers, OpenAPI, etc. Scala.js support of Airframe also enables building interactive Web applications that can dynamically render DOM elements while talking with Scala-based RPC servers. With Airframe RPC, the value of Scala developers will be much higher both for frontend and backend areas.

ABSTRACT OF THE TALK
Kubernetes has hit a home run for stateless workloads, but can it do the same for stateful services such as distributed databases? Before we can answer that question, we need to understand the challenges of running stateful workloads on, well anything. In this talk, we will first look at which stateful workloads, specifically databases, are ideal for running inside Kubernetes. Secondly, we will explore the various concerns around running databases in Kubernetes for production environments, such as: - The production-readiness of Kubernetes for stateful workloads in general - The pros and cons of the various deployment architectures - The failure characteristics of a distributed database inside containers In this session, we will demonstrate what Kubernetes brings to the table for stateful workloads and what database servers must provide to fit the Kubernetes model. This talk will also highlight some of the modern databases that take full advantage of Kubernetes and offer a peek into what’s possible if stateful services can meet Kubernetes halfway. We will go into the details of deployment choices, how the different cloud-vendor managed container offerings differ in what they offer, as well as compare performance and failure characteristics of a Kubernetes-based deployment with an equivalent VM-based deployment.

In the TigerGraph database, Kafka Connect framework was used to build the native S3 data loader. In TigerGraph Cloud, we will be building native integration with many data sources such as Azure Blob Storage and Google Cloud Storage using Kafka as an integrated component for the Cloud Portal.

Using Kafka to stream data into TigerGraph, a distributed graph database, is a common pattern in our customers’ data architecture. We have seen the integration in three different layers around TigerGraph’s data flow architecture, and many key use case areas such as customer 360, entity resolution, fraud detection, machine learning, and recommendation engine. Firstly, TigerGraph’s internal data ingestion architecture relies on Kafka as an internal component. Secondly, TigerGraph has a builtin Kafka Loader, which can connect directly with an external Kafka cluster for data streaming. Thirdly, users can use an external Kafka cluster to connect other cloud data sources to TigerGraph cloud database solutions through the built-in Kafka Loader feature. In this session, we will present the high-level architecture in three different approaches and demo the data streaming process.

PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
