Introducing InfluxDB’s New Time Series Database Storage Engine

Doing performance tuning on a massively distributed database is never an easy task. This is especially true for TiDB, an open-source, cloud-native NewSQL database for elastic scale and real-time analytics, because it consists of multiple components and each component has plenty of metrics. Like many distributed systems, TiDB uses Prometheus to store the monitoring and performance metrics and Grafana to visualize these metrics. Thanks to these two open source projects, it is easy for TiDB developers to add monitoring and performance metrics. However, as the metrics increase, the learning curve becomes steeper for TiDB users to gain performance insights. In this talk, we will share how we measure latency in a distributed system using a top-down (holistic) approach, and why we introduced "tuning by database time" and "tuning by color" into TiDB. The new methodologies and Grafana dashboard help reduce the time and the requirement of expertise in performance tuning by orders of magnitude.

Cassandra is a great fit for high write use cases, which makes it a popular choice for storing time series and sensor-collection workloads. At Crowdstrike, we've been using Cassandra for just that purpose, collecting petabytes of expiring time series data. In this talk, I'll discuss compaction in time series workloads, and the TimeWindowCompactionStrategy we developed specifically for this purpose. I'll detail TWCS specific configuration properties, some lesser known compaction sub-properties that apply to all compaction strategies, and also cover other general tricks and tuning that are useful for very large time-series workloads.

Large partitions shall no longer be a nightmare. That is the goal of CASSANDRA-11206. 100MB and 100,000 cells per partition is the recommended limit for a single partition in Cassandra up to 3.5. Exceeding these limits can cause a lot of trouble. Repairs and compactions could fail and reads cause out-of-memory failures. This talk provides a deep-dive of the reasons for the previous limitations, why exceeding these limitations caused trouble, how the improvements in Cassandra 3.6 helps with big partitions and why you should not blindly let your partitions get huge. HBase 2.0 is the next stable major release for Apache HBase scheduled for early 2017. It is the biggest and most exciting milestone release from the Apache community after 1.0. HBase-2.0 contains a large number of features that is long time in the development, some of which include rewritten region assignment, perf improvements (RPC, rewritten write pipeline, etc), async clients, C++ client, offheaping memstore and other buffers, Spark integration, shading of dependencies as well as a lot of other fixes and stability improvements. We will go into technical details on some of the most important improvements in the release, as well as what are the implications for the users in terms of API and upgrade paths. Existing users of HBase/Phoenix as well as operators managing HBase clusters will benefit the most where they can learn about the new release and the long list of features. We will also briefly cover earlier 1.x release lines and compatibility and upgrade paths for existing users and conclude by giving an outlook on the next level of initiatives for the project.
