Rural local self-government, also known as Panchayati Raj, is a three-tier system of local governance in India below state level. It aims to decentralize administration and give more power to rural communities. The system includes village-level Gram Panchayats, block/mandal-level Panchayat Samitis, and district-level Zila Parishads. The 73rd amendment to the Indian Constitution in 1992 established panchayats as legally mandated self-governing bodies and the current system was implemented in 1993, with Gram Panchayats directly elected and higher tiers indirectly elected.
