Migration of APs from ZoneDirector to Ruckus Cloud

Migration of APs from ZoneDirector to Ruckus Cloud
• The following procedure looks difficult, but it is easy to perform if your APs
obtain an IP address from a DHCP server
- APs are factory defaulted during the migration - if they use a static IP that will be lost
• If NOT using DHCP then use one of the following methods:
- AP migration functionality in ZoneDirector:

• May not be available for some ZD versions/AP models
- Manually convert ZD APs to Cloud firmware:

Prerequisites for the migration
• A DHCP and a TFTP server is required on the AP network
- APs will be set to factory default during the migration and lose their static IP addresses if
not running on DHCP. The TFTP-server is where the APs get their intermediate step
standalone firmware from
• Make sure all your APs are connected and operational!!
• Backup the ZoneDirector
• Get a list of the AP Names, IPs and Serial Numbers by exporting the AP table from the
ZD GUI
- If you are on a real old ZD version you may not be able to export serial numbers so you will
have to go into AP details individually to get them, or use SNMP as detailed on the next slide

A little bit of SNMP, because it’s simple …
• SNMP – Simple Network Management Protocol is disabled by default in ZD and
therefor needs to be enabled. Go to:
ZD  System  System Settings  Network Management (end of page) 
- Enable SNMP Agent
- Enable Inherit SNMPv2 for APs
- SNMP RO community: public
- SNMP RW community: *********

Import the AP list into Cloud

In Ruckus Cloud select “Add Networking Device”, download the AP Import template and populate it with
the AP Names, Venue and Serial Numbers then Import it back into Cloud

Further preparation
• If configured, disable DHCP option 43 or DNS discovery to prevent APs trying to
reconnect to the ZD using them
- The APs will use the Ruckus Cloud hosted registration service to connect to Cloud
• Disable AP auto-approve in the ZoneDirector:
ZD  System  AP General Settings  Access Point Policies  Approval  disable the checkbox
• Delete all approved APs in ZD (they might reappear after a few seconds as
“Unapproved” APs, doesn’t matter)
• Download and install the tool Crossbreeder to manage AP firmware update:
- http://dogtag.tacoppini.com
• Deploy a TFTP server on the network
• Download/copy the latest AP Solo firmware (11x.x or newer) files into the TFTP
directory and rename them in the format <AP_model>_firmware.bl7

Import the AP IP Addresses into Crossbreeder
ap_ip.csv:

Run Crossbreeder with defaults to see the AP information
• Just click on GO!
• The result is:
Login Failed, because
Crossbreeder connects
to the APs using SSH
and requires the ZD
login credentials

Correct the AP Login details and try again…
• Correct the login
details to be that of
your ZD and click GO!
again
• You will see all the
information
Crossbreeder retrieves
from the APs
Note: The AP FW Version is
based on the ZD
Version

Set the APs to factory defaults
• Activate Reset AP to
factory default
• Reboot AP
• But do NOT Change
Firmware yet!
• And GO!
• The APs will lose all
their configuration

Change Firmware
• De-activate Reset AP to
factory defaults!
• De-activate Reboot AP!
• Enable Change
Firmware:
- Mode: TFTP
- TFTP-server IP address
- Specify the firmware
filename schema (%m is a
placeholder for the Model)
• GO!
Note: Crossbreeder uses
super/sp-admin to log in
after factory defaults

Verify the progress of the firmware udpate
• Leave the first
instance doing its
thing and open a 2nd
instance
• Click on GO! From
time to time and see
the changes
• Version 11x.x comes
from Crossbreeder /
TFTP server (interim
update)
• Version 5.x comes
from the Cloud

In Cloud: APs coming online (can take up to 15 minutes!)

Final Steps
• Check all migrated APs are up and running in the Cloud
• Perform the final configuration:
- WLANs
- Groups
- Permissions
- Maps
- Profiles & Polices
- etc.
• Sit back and relax!
