Writing a Scientific Report or Paper
Results of careful laboratory work are not useful unless they can be presented in a clear, concise manner to others for comment and evaluation. Such presentations are usually in the form of a scientific paper published in a reputable scientific journal. Scientific communications have many things in common, which leads to a rather standard style of writing that allow the results and meaning of experimentation to be quickly grasped by the reader. Scientists do not expect to read attractive, stimulating prose to obtain information from technical scientific papers. The experimental design, results and explanation of results are what are attractive and stimulating not the cleverness of the prose. The following discussion should be useful in helping you prepare your laboratory reports, which are scientific reports.
Read it carefully before beginning your reports. Your laboratory instructor may make additional comments. The specific format of a scientific paper varies among journals. However, the format presented below is the most commonly used. It is the format you must use in your scientific writing for this course.
Part I: Format of a Scientific Report
The scientific report will be composed of seven sections. Each section will have a heading immediately followed by the text, figures or graphs. The order of the sections is: title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion and literature cited.

The overall presentation/grammar/spelling will be evaluated. Although this is not an English class, these elements are important to the proper communication of science. Before you turn in your final version, use the spell check function and reread your report. You should also take the time to visit the Center for Academic Success to participate in the Read, Write, and Cite Workshop series for additional help on writing your reports.
Note: Never write statements like the following: “My lab report is about…”, “My hypothesis is…”,
or any version of this type of statement.

Section
Create a title that briefly conveys to the reader the purpose of the paper. The title of your report must be informative. Many readers scan journal article titles and the decision whether or not to pursue an article is based on the information in the title. Generally, this information includes: primary factor(s) manipulated or studied; outcome of manipulation (the response or effects); and organism studied, if relevant. The SBTM Prospectus is a stepping stone into the final process that students have been preparing for throughout their programs – the dissertation. Using this template, you will lay out the framework for the structure and content of your Dissertation Proposal, which, in turn, provides the framework for the Dissertation Manuscript. Northcentral Milestone Document Templates represent the standards of the research and academic communities for research writing. Because this Prospectus Paper Template (PPT) provides the framework for the structure and content of the Dissertation Proposal, it is important for students’ Prospectus Papers to adhere to the template in terms of content, organization, and format. This course contains five Case Analysis assignments. You should begin working on these early. It is very
important to focus on continuous improvement throughout the course. Failure to make corrections based
on the instructor’s feedback for each case analysis will result is a significantly lower score in subsequent
case. Therefore, based on the instructor’s feedback on each case, you are expected to exhibit continuous
improvement in each of the following cases.
There are basic rules about a case analysis to follow. First, do not submit them in question and answer
format which is not appropriate for case analyses. Your case analyses must be composed in essay
format and adhere to the following APA style and formatting guidelines, which will help ensure a solid
grade on your first case analysis.
1. Include a title page containing case name, course identification, date, your name, and your
instructor’s name.
2. An abstract is not necessary in a short case analysis.
3. Write your case analysis in essay style with a tabbed first line in each paragraph. Make sure to
address each case question thoroughly. You are suggested to commit a minimum of one
paragraph to answer each question, two if necessary.
4. The content of your analysis must be at least 1,000 words. This does not include the title page,
main document, and sources in the Reference section.
5. The case analysis must include at least three heading sections such as Introduction or
Background, Current Issues or Issues Addressed, and Conclusion or Recommendations. The
names of the headings are at your discretion but must help the reader better understand your
analysis.
6. The document must be double-spaced, the font must be in Arial, Courier, or Times New Roman,
and the font size must be 12-point. There should be no extra white space anywhere in your
document which includes line breaks and/or page breaks. The document must have one inch
margins all around.
7. Include a References section with your sources. Do not use the terms Bibliography or Works
Cited.
8. Include and cite at least three scholarly sources for each case, and list these in the References
section. There must also be at least five citations throughout your document with at least one
being a “direct quote.”
The aforementioned items must be followed in all assigned cases. Not adhering to these guidelines will
result in deductions from your overall score. Hence, all of the aforementioned factors are used in grading
your cases. Additionally, the rubric on the following page will be used to grade your case analysis. You
are strongly recommended to print this document for reference.

- 1. Context Analysis – 20% Written report - 1500 words Detailed and thorough analysis of your practice area context with respect to your initial problem, opportunity, or avenue of enquiry.
