ART I - Visual Art Essentials
The prerequisite for
all other Visual Arts
classes, in Art I
students learn
technique, improve
their drawing skills,
experiment with new
media and build art
vocabulary.
4. The drawing above was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci's sketchbooks (shown on right).
Students created their own feather quill pens which added to the work authentic qualities of a Renaissance
drawing.

8. In Art - II Styles & Techniques class
is the second step on the track for Art Major. Students
expand on concepts learned in Art I, with an emphasis on
observational drawing, technique and skill building.
9. Drawing & Painting
is a course designed for the serious art student who wants
to improve their skills while exploring a variety of drawing
and painting styles utilizing wet and dry media.
10. Ceramics I students create 3-Dimensional sculptures
from clay. They learn a variety of handbuilding and glazing
techniques including pinch, coil and slab. They explore art
and artifacts from a variety of cultures and incorporate their
influences into their ceramics projects.
11. Ceramics II students build
upon what they learned, practice
new techniques and combine
techniques to create more
interesting and challenging
projects.
12. students learn and apply LAYOUT and DESIGN
concepts using illustration and typography.
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop are their
primary mediums.

13. Visual Journaling
is a creative way for students to express and record their life
experiences, emotions and ideas in a sketchbook format.
Visual Journaling is a key component to
art making and to the artist’s creative
process. Students experiment with
wet and dry media, innovative
techniques and collage as they
construct their personal journals.
14. Color & Design students learn
color and design theory and how it was
applied by artists throughout art history.
They are challenged to incorporate good
design as they experiment with a variety of
art styles and media to create engaging,
well composed works of art.

20. Ceramics III is an advanced course for students who have
achieved a high level of technical skill and demonstrated artistic ability
when working with clay and glaze. Students research art, history
and/or cultures and apply it’s influence to their work. They create
complex ceramic objects which speak of their interests and incorporate
personal symbolism.
21. Ceramics IVstudents use independent problem
solving skills in combination with artistic ability to build more
complex and sophisticated ceramic objects.
22. Advanced Ceramics students participate in annual
workshops where they learn to mixing glaze from recipes,
advanced glazing and alternative firing techniques.

24. Advanced Photography is a course that
builds on the foundations established in Photo I/II. Using
advanced digital editing programs and lighting techniques,
students create a year-long personal portfolio as well as weekly
shooting assignments.
25. Advanced Photography is designed
for students who are highly motivated, work independently and
who have a strong interest in pursuing art and photography as
a major in college.
RECREATE AN ADVERTISEMENT
26. Portfolio Development
This is a class for the serious art student who plans on
studying art after high school. Here they prepare an art
portfolio for submission to an art school or college by
concentrating on observational drawing, skill development
improving technique and developing a personal style.

AP ART STUDIO is an intense
class where students can earn 10
high school credits and submit their
portfolio to the College Board for
college credit. Students must be
highly motivated and seriously
committed to this college-level visual
art experience.
*Teacher recommendation, portfolio review and
summer projects are required.
30. Senior Art Show
A yearly event where art major students set up individual galleries.
Family, school and community members attend an artist reception
to see and celebrate the artist’s accomplishments.
31. Independent Study
SENIOR OPTION
Independent Study (for Juniors) and Senior Option (for Seniors) is available to students
who are highly motivated and responsible. It is a an individual plan for learning,
proposed by the student who is interested in pursuing their studies beyond the offered
curriculum. If you are interested in Independent Study or Senior Option, talk to your art
teacher about it. Consider these points:

Students present their achievements at a midterm and end of term meeting before the
Principal, Director of Guidance, their Guidance Counselor and their Mentor.

community and fund raising projects. All are invited to join the
National Art Honor Society
