The global population is ageing at an unprecedented rate, with over 50% of people aged 60 or older expected to live in urban environments by 2020. Rapid urbanization combined with population ageing will see most people grow old in cities. By 2050, the number of people over 60 will triple to 2 billion, exceeding the number of children under 15 for the first time. Effectively responding to this demographic shift requires policies and systems that respect the rights of older urban residents and remove age-based discrimination. Failure to do so constructs vulnerability through exclusion and inequitable access to resources.

NEWYORK COMMUNITIES FOR CHANGE Every day, thousands of low and moderate income families across New York wake up facing uncertainty: uncertainty about being able to send their children to quality schools; uncertainty about having a roof over their heads because of rising rents and skyrocketing interest rates on their home loans; uncertainty about earning a decent wage, and being able to afford to take their families to the doctor. But many of us refuse to stand by idly and allow this uncertainty to control our lives. We've formed an organization to work together towards building a New York where these uncertainties are a thing of the past. Our organization is New York Communities for Change. New York Communities for Change is a coalition of working families in low and moderate income communities fighting for social and economic justice throughout New York State. By using direct action, legislative advocacy, and community organizing, NY Communities' members work to impact the political and economic policies that directly affect us. Through neighborhood chapters and issue-based committees, we are working to ensure that every family throughout New York has access to quality schools, affordable housing, and good jobs. It is through the power-in-numbers approach that NY Communities is able to win REAL change for our towns and neighborhoods. 22/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

39. Title Crooked House Theatre Company Community arts in Ireland is struggling to maintain an identity as an artform which is not defined simply by its ability to impact on community development or community education. This struggle is centred around different perceptions of the remit of the artist in the community. Nevertheless, the ability of the arts (and in particular, of theatre) to impact on community development is unique in that it directly accesses and stimulates the imagination of its participants in a way that no other activity does. According to theorists like Boal and Bond, the imagination is the means by which we can define and shape our society, our humanness, and our concept of justice. 22/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

EMMAUS The first Emmaus Community was founded in Paris in 1949 by Father Henri-Antoine Groues, better known as the Abbé Pierre, a Catholic priest, MP and former member of the French Resistance during the Second World War. As an MP, he fought to provide homes for those who lived on the streets of Paris. One night, a man called Georges was brought to the Abbé Pierre. Georges had been released after 20 years in prison, only to find his family unable to cope with his reappearance. Homeless and despairing, he had tried to commit suicide in the Seine. The Abbé Pierre did not just offer him a place to sleep. He asked for his help. He told Georges of the homeless mothers who came to him for help for them and their children and how he could not cope with the problem on his own. 65. MC GUFFIN MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin) is "a plot element that catches the viewers' attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction".[1] The defining aspect of a MacGuffin is that the major players in the story are (at least initially) willing to do and sacrifice almost anything to obtain it, regardless of what the MacGuffin actually is. In fact, the specific nature of the MacGuffin may be ambiguous, undefined, generic, left open to interpretation or otherwise completely unimportant to the plot. Common e xamples are money, victory, glory, survival, a source of power, or a potential threat, or it may simply be something entirely unexplained. I 22/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

A shower of shooting stars is set to descend on the country tonight as the Earth sweeps through a cloud of shining space particles. Experts say tonight should offer almost ideal conditions to watch the Perseid meteor shower as a moonless night combines with the possibility of favourable weather conditions.Watchers who take up position in a good spot, well away from city lights, may be able to spot as many as 80 meteors per hour if the night sky is dark and clear — averaging more than one a minute. The shower will be at its height at 10pm, according to the Irish Astronomical Association (IAA). 22/09/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
